A hair realisation

...today, after my latest hair cut I finally realised that I am happiest with length and texture when it comes to my locks. The revelation has been hard earned seeing as my time on YLF includes but is not limited to;-

Long straight and sunkissed
Dark brown pixie
Ash blonde pixie
Current cut with natural hair colour

Please remind me of this thread the next time I contemplate the shears.

What are your preferences when it comes to your hair? Have you found a signature look or do you prefer to ring in the changes?

That is so beautiful on you Jules! I can find something I really like about each hairstyle, but I love the length and texture you are sporting now. The long bangs are so pretty and the color is perfect. Cheers!

ETA: Oops, I forgot the question. For my own hair (and I'd like to have what you're having, TYVM, but my hair isn't that healthy any more) I keep coming back to the same basic bob. I have tried a lot of minor changes in the last year or so, but my hair is only capable of so much, and it's better to just work with it, instead of against it.

I like the longer looks. I like to let my wild hair do what it does as opposed to trying to beat it into submission. Right now I'm in an awkward in between stage and am trying to decide whether to let it grow or trim it up a bit.

I like both the short and long looks on you. But your natural color is beautiful, I wouldn't touch it! (my fave is the current look with bangs.)

I think you look beautiful in all these styles and colors - truly. But I can certainly see why you love your longer look the best. It's smashing.

My signature look is short with my natural salt and pepper color. I don't plan on ever going long again. It just doesn't suit me or feel like me.

I like all the hair styles on you R&J! You looked so incredibly impish with your pixie, but I understand the love for longer locks. I am happy with either myself, as long as the cut doesn't fight my curls. While not particular about how long my hair may be, I am much more picky about where the volume placement is in a cut.

To my eye, the most important element in a successful hairstyle for you is the framing of the eyes. The fact that your hair is lighter, allows you to carry length without it overpowering your features. I think all these looks succeed, but knowing which version makes you feels the most "you" is the most important criteria of all!

You look fabulous in all the looks, but the current one is lovely on you and if it's working with your hair's natural qualities, that is all the more reason to love it.

We all know my signature look and I forget it to my own disadvantage. But I won't forget again.

I was just thinking about this today too - I saw an old pic of me, and thought "Now why did I chop my hair off?" I liked the angularness of long, straight hippie hair. I'm growning out my pixie - I was just intending to go to a chin-length a-line. But maybe once I'm there I'll keep going....

I am longing for longer hair (no pun intended) and your current pic is not helping at all! My current stylist walks on water as far as I'm concerned, but he's against long hair. Maybe now that I'm moving I can try growing it? I don't know if it's thick enough to look good, but I can try.

I think you look great in both long and short hair, but it's important to know what feels right to you. I feel best with longer hair, too.

Echoing the others to say that you look lovely in all these hair lengths, but I think for most people we only feel ourselves one way or the other. I was quite surprised to see your bangs actually! Lately I think if I didn't already know how bad a chop looks on me I would have been sorely tempted just so that I didn't have to deal with hair for awhile. For myself, I am wondering how much longer I can keep long hair without feeling like I need to cut it to look more "serious" for the job market. My most recent cut created many shorter layers in the front, like a bob, but keeping length in the back. I am growing out my bangs and I hope this will be my new signature look for awhile I remember reading in a book that great style icons of the ages generally land on a hair look that suits them and don't change very much with the years, and this is also a way of staying ageless. I wouldn't take that on as a rule, but I still find it to be an interesting idea to contemplate.

Gosh, you look so great in all these styles. Your natural color is beautiful. I feel best is longish hair that covers my ears and neck. I just feel exposed and frankly cold with short hair.

I've had a huge variety of colors and cuts. Black, platinum blond, green, leopard spotted, mohawk, bangs, pixie, etc. Most recently, I cut my hair pretty drastically, from the small of my back all the way up into a pixie with long bangs. At first I was kind of shell-shocked, but I really started to love it. Unfortunately, my hair grows almost an inch a month. I quickly realized I'd be bankrupt trying to keep up with a short cut. And now I'm miserably grinding my way through various awkward grow out stages, counting the days until I can put it up in a pony again. So I guess for me it's 50/50 what I love and what's functional.

I like all of these cuts on you but see why you like the longer hair. I have had all lengths including a very short pixie. I prefer shoulder or a bit longer - I find it the easiest and most natural look for me - and it makes me the happiest, if that makes sense.

Hmmmm. Like it long on you but I am a real fan of the pixie on you. Not everyone can pull it off but you certainly do.
I get bored with the same old same old and have a love/hate relationship with my curls. If you're anything like me, It's only a matter of time before you're on the prowl for a new look.

You have amazing eyes and gorgeous skin so you can pull off all of these looks equally well. I love the new do - especially the way you have it in your birthday loot post. I've pretty much worn my hair the same for ever. It needs to be longer or it is hard to control. Fortunately my hairdresser agrees with me.

I like you hair close to the natural color and loved both the pixie and it's current look.

I'm trying to decide what to do with mine right now. I grew it out for my field season for practicality and being able to keep it back, but think I might feel more put -together and professional at the new job if I "lobbed" it again, rather than letting it grow out and keeping it constantly in a braid, ponytail, or bun for work.

Lucky you to have so many options; it must be hard to resist changing things up, but going with your gut (texture/length) makes sense. Your natural shade is so pretty and your bangs so cooperative that I can see why you feel your current cut is such a winner!

ps I have had a crop, bra-strap length, and all that comes in between. At this point in my life, jaw-length to +/- shoulder length with face-framing layers + my natural wavy texture works best with my hair's health, it's super-fast growth cycle, and my face shape.

I'm starting to get the itch to go back to some variation of a 20s (wavy) bob just for variety but we'll see. My friend of nearly 40 years is on point to remind me NO BANGS (cowlicks, texture) despite my high forehead.

You're lovely in each 'do, but I especially like #3. I have to admit, however, I am so envious of those of you who can wear the short, straight hairdos (Angie and Suz come to mind), which allow your beautiful faces to shine. My hair has a curly/wavy tendency that annoys me beyond believe -- pieces go every which way when I try to wear it smooth.
