A birthday dinner WIW and blazer question

We celebrated MILs 80th on Friday. I had no problems getting dressed as the event was just a bit dressier than my usual casual. I briefly though about wearing a dress but opted for warm and comfy instead. I did try an older Talbot's velveteen blazer but couldn't decide whether things like this date or whether it looks current enough. I saw that Angie recommended Talbot's velveteen blazer again this year and I can't really tell much of a difference from the one I purchased a few years ago. I think it's how I styled it that makes it look more conservative perhaps? Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

ETAA: do you think styling the blazer with BF jeans would look better?

Never mind, they must have still been loading! The Moto jacket outfit is so fab. The Blazer looks really nice but is it a touch big? I think it would look great maybe with something silky underneath? And your Thanksgiving outfit is cozy loveliness.

Thanks, TG! The blazer is stretchy but I couldn't go any smaller. My shoulders need every mm of space. It could "potentially" be altered through the body but not much and probably not worth the expense since I seem to wear it once a year at most. Thanks for sharing your observations. Definitely something to think about. I'll try to get a picture with my arms down before I donate!

These are all very nice! I really like the blazer, think it suits you, the colour is lovely, and you should keep it. As for the styling, you could try it over a thinner silky top and/or add some jewelry or a scarf. I think the blazer would work with BF jeans too. And me being me, I would also try with a brooch or two

All these outfits look great on you and the blazer does not look dated to me. Hang it front and center in the closet and wear it lots this December. Mags says Hi to sweet Oreo. She would love a play date

The blazer is great and I love the color. I might try to emphasize the color by wearing a contrasting or lighter color underneath. Oreo is too cute!

I like the blazer and in fact it looks similar to one I own. I notice that the “stance” and/or lapel points on the collar are very very high on this blazer. Maybe that’s what makes it feel more “conservative” to you?

@Katerina: Thank you. I think you’re on to something with a thinner top and some jewelry. I have such a short neck that scarves generally don’t work for me--too much going on with lapels already, I think. A funky brooch on the other hand could draw the eye down. Thanks for the suggestion!

@Joy and Shevia: Thanks! That’s my challenge for December--to wear this jacket! A lighter contrast blouse is a great idea to lighten the look.

@Jessikams: Thanks! You’re absolutely right about the stance. I think the ones I’ve seen lately have a lower stance and are less structured overall. There’s also the thought in the back of my mind that the jacket is from Talbots and definitely veers conservative. I think it’s the only thing I’ve ever bought there. It’s all in the styling though--I’m going to have to do some homework and see how I can make this feel more like me because I actually love it still.

I think both outfits are great - and all I'd do is shorten the sleeves of the blazer. I love velveteen, and I don't think it ever dates in a classic cut like this. And the jeans look great with it! Cute pup , too

The blazer looks great. I might think about wearing it with a top with a v neck may be. Colour is rich and warm. Oreo is cuddly!

This is how I’ve styled mine recently- like you, I fear Talbots is too conservative but I inherited a bunch of stuff from there and it’s in good shape. And I love the material and color of this blazer. It really looks like the lapels are the same on yours and mine. (In this photo I have a velvet scarf draped over the lapels)

I prefer the way the blazer is styled in #3 over #2.
You look happiest in #4-but who wouldn't be with that companion

The leather moto is gorgeous! I’d try the velveteen blazer with a funky t and jewelry like jessikams showed or maybe even a flannel shirt if you have one. Both would take it in a less conservative direction. BF jeans would work too. Talbots items will always be conservative but they are well made and worth holding onto if you can find ways you like to wear them. What a cute puppy!!!!!

I love Oreo and that is the best name for a pup with his colouring.

There is nothing dated about these outfits! It is great that you are enjoying your OTK boots.

Thanks, Lisa! I altered these myself when I first got the jacket. I’m not sure I’m up for that project again. I usually scrunch. That may help relax the vibe too.

@Jessikims: Wow! I would never have thought that was a Talbot’s piece. It is all in the styling because you look SO cool in this. And such a gorgeous jewel tone on you! Thanks for the inspo! The velvet scarf draped over this is genius, btw.

@Cee: Thanks! The moto doesn’t come out to play much. It’s from back when the jackets were really cropped and only seems to work with a few things.

@Chris: Thanks for posting on the velveteen jackets otherwise mine would not be coming out to play. I hope that you find one. You’ve given me another great suggestion with flannel--I’m thinking even something patterned would add a funky element. I have lots of homework now!

You look great in these outfits! I for one agree not to worry about the fit of an item worn so infrequently, and I know that for you the shoulder fit is key. The blazer is a classic item in a great color, and I would love the juxtaposition with a more casual cut of jeans like BF jeans. It's great the way you styled it here, too.

I like the green blazer with the skinnies and big boots. Very you. I would love to see some sort of cool t-shirt under it, a la JessieKams.

My vote is to keep, and maybe post a style lab. It would be interesting to see the blazer over a romantic floral blouse (or dress) or in combination with blush and merlot colours. Of course it would work over a striped T as well.

I really like velvet with denim, it’s my favorite and honestly the only way I wear velvet.
I can never tell the difference between this years velvet jackets and the jackets I bought years ago ! I think yours looks great !

I don't see conservative. I see classic and sharp velvet blazer outfits - with a good dose on OTK Kelly-boot-fun. Perhaps have the sleeves shortened.

Love #1 on you! I understand your feeling about the blazer as I sometimes feel that way in regular blazers too - maybe try it with something like a graphic tee or a lace up top or something like that under it to give it more edge?
