3 New Tops: Styling Suggestions Appreciated

Good Morning YLF!

I hope everyone is well! More finds from shopping with my sister last week, these are not K/R as I have cut the tags and worn each once or twice but I would like ideas on how to wear and pair them.

# 1-2 -- Silk abstract print (actually inspired but Ceit's shirt she is wearing today!)
# 3-5 -- Blouson sleeve dotted fly away jacket (it just reminded me of the fall runway pins I've made from Angie's coverage and really fun & interesting pattern)
#6-9 -- Grandpa sweater/bomber cross. The body is a silk crepe with raglan sleeves, the trim is knit. I think I will probably hand stitch the pockets closed, I like the slouch but an worries I will catch them on something and tear them.

These pieces are all a bit less classic that I have previously worn but I am really liking this new direction in my style. Something Caro said a while back about having a wardrobe of mainly classics but with a few avant garde items is really resonating with me. (I dont know if these qualify as avant garde but I do feel they move away from classic basics.)

Would love to hear if you have a category name for these items and ideas for styling. I always appreciate your comments and feedback (even if it is to say I was crazy for buying these things!) Thanks

Hi Sarah, I really like the blouson sleeve with the cobalt blue top underneath in picture#3. I'd say that all of these items fit Artistic Eclectic pretty well. Congrats on your new style direction!

As a classics girl, I do like straying from time to time by adding pieces such as these.

1&2 - Gorgeous shirt and I love the very neutral tone that helps with layering. You styled it how I would do it so I don't have much suggestion except maybe you could try it tucked into a skirt to see how that would look.

3,4&5 - 3 is a bit too much pattern play for me but I love the jacket.

6-9 - I love polka dots and since this is in the very classic colors of black, white and grey I can see it going well with many things. I actually would like to see it with your skirt in number 3 and that black turtleneck.

I think that asymmetric top is beautiful -- the rust colour looks especially gorgeous on you.

A bit too much pattern to my eye in the other outfits -- but I really like the pattern on that jacket.

The bomber is really interesting too! I'd like to see that with your white jeans.

These are interesting pieces, Sarah. It's neat to see you branching out and trying a whole variety of silhouettes.

I really like the abstract top in #1/2 and like it on you in both stylings. I think it will be super versatile. Yay!

The jacket is fun, too. I like it with the cobalt top but find it a bit too much pattern for me with the skirt. Do you have a plain pencil skirt?

I'm not sure about the bomber/ sweater. I have a slight poison eye for this look so don't really feel fit to comment sensibly on it. I will look forward to others' styling suggestions so I can learn along with you!

I like #1 a lot - this is really a great style for you! I agree with the others about the jacket in #3, it's fun and great colors, etc. but maybe not with the skirt. I think you did a good job styling the bomber with pink to add a nice feminine touch. I wonder about the length of the shirt, sleeves and bomber though - they are all sort of ending at the same line and I think you could maybe semi-tuck the top, scrunch the sleeves or something else to break up that line.

First I must laugh because I have been a solids girl for so long and now have gotten all wonky on patterns. Guess those runway shows (JCrew, anyone?) have me OTT pattern mixing!

Molly -- Yeah, I am so excited that my Arty Eclectic desires are starting to show through more clearly.

Kalli -- Thanks! Great idea for the skirt, turtleneck and quasi-bomber. I never would have thought of that! And it is a stellar idea.

Ceit -- Interestingly I stopped wearing rust and most browns b/c I thought the didnt suit. Maybe I'll reconsider. I like the white jeans idea for the bomber (well for all the tops really...)

Suz -- I am totally enjoying trying all sorts of very different and interesting things trying to see what resonates with me and get worn the most. I will pair the cobalt dot jacket with my plain black pencil and a white blouse -- that will be a fun pairing Perhaps, a rule of one statement piece per outfit off the runway... As for the other jacket, I dont think it is a true bomber but I will be experimenting with it and we will learn in the process

Una -- You have great style, I am guessing you mean #1

Texstyle -- I see what you mean with the pink top and bomber hems, I will try to vary that up a bit. Good eye!

I loved the top in 1 & 2 and both styling were great.

I will be blunt and say I did not like the jacket in 3-4. even with the more neutral background I didn't find the fit flattering to you. But if you are not after flattering, which is allowed, but just fun and interesting, then I do understand.

I didn't feel a strong reaction at all to the last one. But it looked more flattering in general although I think you could do better

p.s. Stylewise I'd call these items "Contemporary", which I use to mean the more wearable side of Avant Garde.

Another big thumbs up for #1 --- terrific! I love all the elements in #3, but not sure I see them together. The pairings you've mentioned later in the thread sound great.

I like the bomber --- and the shirt --- but for some reason I don't like them as as well as a unit. This could be just how they photograph. What about the bomber with a simpler silhouette in the base?

Yes, I meant #1 - the others are a little beyond my styling abilities because of the shape of the jackets.

Great finds, Sarah! I also love the top and the way you've styled it - very flattering!

I think the pattern mixing with the jacket and skirt doesn't work as well as it could because the patterns are of similar scale. Try a small check or print with that jacket, and I think it could work.

I like the bomber/sweater, too. Great casual piece, and it looks nice and warm (from someone who runs cold ;-)).
