Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Dresses

It has been an incredible dress season, and there were some delightful winners at the sale. Retailers are finally understanding that we want dresses with coverage and tailoring in all the right places, and substantial fabrics with heft and drape. I came home with two dresses, but could have purchased more.

IMPORTANT: Check whether the items are available in petite and plus because I’ve only provided the description in regular sizes. In some cases regular sizes can work on petites, and regular size ranges extend into larger sizes.

  • Eliza J Eliza J Ruffle Sleeve Sheath Dress | Nordstrom: A gorgeous dress on an hourglass, rectangle and inverted triangle body type. Extremely good on a larger bust. The sleeves look like little wings, but their long diagonal lines visually soften a broad shoulder line and decrease the size of the bust. Lots of fab colours and read the rave reviews.
  • Vince Camuto Vince Camuto Scuba Sheath Dress (Regular & Petite) | Nordstrom: Super cute dress on a larger bust despite the high neckline. The wonderful diagonal lines of the colour blocking create a flattering effect on the contour of the body. They flatten a curve, AND add shape to a straight figure. Very clever. Might need to size down.
  • LEWIT Lewit Asymmetrical Pleated Shirtdress | Nordstrom: Avant-Garde Fabness with a hint of Modern Retro. Best on a straighter figure with a smaller bust. Dress must fit fluidly.
  • 1901 1901 Knit Midi Dress (Regular & Petite) | Nordstrom: AMAZING dress on a narrow rectangle, hourglass, inverted triangle and gentle pear-shaped body type. Best on a smaller bust. Super cute back button detailing so fab with short hair. Weighty fabric and the stripes look best. Super soft and comfy. Gorgeous length. It will showcase your curves and that's FABULOUS.
  • Vince Camuto Vince Camuto Asymmetrical Hem Scuba Crepe Dress | Nordstrom: Fun frock on a curvy body type like an hourglass or pretty pear with a larger bust. Good fit as long as you can fill out the top. Might feel too short in front on tall gals. Size down.
  • 1901 1901 Wrapped Plaid Sheath Dress | Nordstrom: Elegantly suited to a rectangle or inverted triangle body type. Fitted and dressy. Feel free to wear it with pointy toe flats.
  • 1901 1901 Stripe Shirtdress (Regular & Petite) | Nordstrom: I LOVED this dress without the belt on my almost 6ft tall, size US14 curvy client with a larger bust. She rocked it over skinnies. I like the tie belt too.
  • 1901 1901 Midi Shirtdress (Regular & Petite) | Nordstrom: An AMAZING dress if you like the classics, a bit of prep, and a Modern Retro vibe. The volume on the skirt is sleek and streamlined despite the gathers, and the fit is VERY comfortable. Lovely fabric and a scrumptious fit AS LONG AS YOU LIKE TO DEFINE YOUR WAIST. It can be dressed down with flats like you see in the photo, and I prefer the sleeves scrunched. The bow makes the dress to my eye so don't remove the belt. Comes in five colours. The navy followed me home. Very, very pretty dress WITH POCKETS. Now I want all the colours.
  • Maggy London Ruched Waist Midi Dress: BEST DRESS AT THE SALE if you like florals, enjoy sleeves, wear black patterns, adore midis, and like to define your waist. Extremely elegant, pretty, streamlining and flattering. Brilliant swoosh factor. Comes in many sizes and goes up to plus. TTS. Everyone who tried it on loved the silhouette, but the pattern is an acquired taste. Length is slightly longer on me, but not much. It followed me home.
  • Halogen Halogen Short Sleeve Ruffle Hem Dress (Regular & Petite) | Nordstrom: This is ADORABLE on petites in the patterns, and fun as a tunic over cropped straights too. Indestructible, does not crease, and easy to wear. Size down a lot.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Knitwear & Tops

The knitwear at the NAS was disappointing, and there wasn’t a lot of it. Pullovers were few and far between, and cardigans reigned supreme. Too many items had overly long sleeves that are annoying, or exuberant sleeves that are hard to layer under coats and jackets. There was thankfully very little cheap and nasty cashmere, and quite a good colour assortment.

There were many more fab tops than sweaters at the sale, which is unusual. There was also a good T-shirt selection, which my clients gobbled up because good tees are hard to find.

IMPORTANT: Check whether the items are available in petite and plus because I’ve only provided the description in regular sizes. In some cases regular sizes can work on petites, and regular size ranges extend into larger sizes.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Jackets, Coats & Vests

The coat assortment is normally a NAS highlight, but the jacket assortment beat it hands down. Too many of the coats were scratchy or ran overly large, despite super fab silhouettes. When a size US6 wears an XS, the smaller sizes have nowhere to go and that’s problematic. The good news is that there was colour and silhouette variety across the board. Pendleton continues to honour their commitment to quality without the designer price point, and faux leather is as fabulous as ever.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Footwear

The strength of this year’s NAS was the footwear assortment, and this is reflected in my client’s purchases and my own. The anniversary offerings in designer salon shoes continues to be disappointing, perhaps because the brands prefer to keep their items exclusive. But there was fabulous footwear across more affordable price points, with ample variety across silhouette, colour, lifestyle and weather conditions. There are lots of comfortable and practical options that look great too. I’m pleased to see an assortment of brown, cream and red shoes as opposed to the usual black and grey. Extended sizes and widths are offered, and so are manageable heel heights.

My Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Top Picks

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has officially begun. After a week of early access to cardholders, it’s now open to all. Brand new merchandise for Fall and Winter 2018 will be discounted for two weeks only. Prices go back up on August 6

I spent a couple of weeks preparing and preselecting the sale with clients and it was AMAZING. We refreshed our wardrobes, had fun trying both predictable and wild card wardrobe items, took ourselves outside of our comfort zones, made discerning purchase decisions, and got a great start on the new colder weather dressing season. There was a higher percentage of warm weather merchandise at the sale this year, which was well received in Seattle’s current Summer heatwave.

Items ran out of stock faster than usual. The reason? Reduced inventory levels, an increase in the number of cardholders, a more desirable assortment of merchandise — your guess is as good as mine. But styles were restocked throughout the sale, which was quite a relief.

Along the way I noted the very best items that were slam dunk winners on clients. I’ve put together six top picks lists that might be helpful if you’re navigating the sale:

I’ve seen all of these items in person and on a range of body types and sizes, across petite, regular, plus and tall women. It’s a wide assortment of items, reflecting the range of lifestyles, style preferences and budgets of my clientele.

This year, Nordstrom did a GREAT job of extending size ranges in both directions. US0 and XXS were included across a larger merchandise assortment, and regular collections frequently went through to XXL and US18. Footwear included extended sizes and widths. There was also a larger selection of petite and plus sizes online. THANK YOU Nordstrom, for being more inclusive in your size specifications.

A few things to consider as you browse the lists:

  • I’ve collected one colour in each item, but be sure to browse through ALL the colour options.
  • Check whether the items are available in petite and plus because I’ve only provided the description in regular sizes. In some cases regular sizes can work on petites, and regular size ranges extend into larger sizes.
  • My descriptions are detailed and specific for a reason. They suggest a match for a particular body type, comfort level, lifestyle, or style preference.
  • Items do come back into stock throughout the fortnight of the sale, so be tenacious and keep checking back on the items that tickle your fancy.
  • At the end of each list there’s a link to the relevant collection page where you can see the items together with their descriptions.

Feel free to ask questions in the comments sections about my picks or any other NAS items, and I’ll do my best to help you out. We’ve also been discussing NAS items in the forum, which is particularly helpful because you can see the items across a range of body types. And please share your own winning purchases in the comments section below.
