Outfit Formula: Sporty Accents

Adding sporty accents to your outfit is on trend right now. Athleisure is full throttle casual and sporty, and one way to go. Sporty Luxe remixes sporty touches with dressier pieces, and is another way to go. Juxtaposition is key.

Athleisure looks are clearly defined and easy to pull together. For example, wear Athleta items from top to toe if you’re in the US, and Bob’s your uncle. You’re in Athleisure. Sporty Luxe looks are a little different, and that’s what these outfits illustrate.

1. Hoodie

A tonal outfit of greys and olive combines a pair of wide jeans with a sporty slouchy hoodie. A relaxed bomber tops the lot. The hood of the top is worn over the collar of the bomber to create a layered effect. Dressy pointy toe pumps in a putty grey with a bag to match provide a bit of luxe.

2. Track Pants and Sneakers

A pair of black sporty cropped track pants with grey tuxedo stripe is combined with a multi-coloured luxe argyle sweater. The grey and black in the sweater match the pants. The Adidas fashion sneakers provide another sporty component. I see a black or brown bag complete the look.

3. Sweatshirts and Rugby Shirts

Sporty items like sweatshirts and rugby tops can be worn with all sorts of dressier or luxe bottoms like faux leather pants and skirts, sequin shorts, white jeans, plaid pants and skirts, and satin skirts. Dressier shoes, bag, and refined jewellery adds the next luxe component to the look.

4. Leggings

Sporty black leggings are combined with a luxe white button down shirt and black sweater for an effective layered effect. A casual boxy denim jacket tops the lot. Dressy black ballet flats are another luxe touch. I see a luxe or sporty bag work equally well to compete the look.

5. Fleece Jacket

A pair of luxe and wide toffee trousers are combined with a sporty white tee. A luxe white button down shirt is layered over the tee. A colourful sporty fleece jacket tops the lot. Its toffee components match the toffee bottoms. Sporty white and bronze sneakers are the casual shoes of choice. No need to bare your midriff. Covering up with the same layers works well too. A sporty or luxe white or toffee bag can finish off the look. Add jewellery, eyewear, and watch as desired.

Lift Your Mood and Your Outfits with Patterns

Playful patterns can add visual interest and elevate a simple item or outfit. They can be small and subtle, or big and bold. On different legs of your style journey your style can be pattern-rich, pattern-poor, or void of patterns entirely. Follow your mood.

Play With Patterns

Stripes, dots, animal prints, plaids, and florals are the classic patterns. When pattern mixing, use a unifying colour to keep the outfit harmonious. Patterned scarves, belts, or shoes are effective accents if the rest of the outfit is in solid colours.

If you are pattern-averse but still want to break patterns into your style, keep them neutral, subtle, low contrast, and with lots of solid space between large motifs. Wear them away from your face. Or use them as a layering piece under a solid topper.

Fringe Trend: Slim & Straight Pants and Jeans

After many seasons of on-trend and fashion forward wide, flared, roomy, relaxed, baggy, slouchy and voluminous bottoms silhouettes, a slim bottoms trend is on the horizon. Slim straight jeans and cigarette pants are making a gentle comeback. It’s not a big comeback, but they’re making a fashionable statement nonetheless. BIG bottoms will continue to reign supreme, but you’ll see slim silhouettes come through in small doses too.

Arguably, slim straight pants and jeans are the forever modern classic standard. Their rises, fabrics, colours and lengths vary with the trends, but they never disappear from fashion completely. The streamlined silhouette is generally easy to wear and style, hence its longevity and popularity. Every so often slim straights are the trendiest silhouette of them all, and sometimes they enjoy a small fashion moment like now.

It’s great that slim silhouettes are becoming more available for those who enjoy them. Variety in silhouette is a good thing.

Personally, I love the wide, flared, voluminous, and big bottoms trend. I’ve been sporting it for years, enjoying the movement, swoosh and elegance of the silhouettes. That said, I didn’t stop wearing slim straight silhouettes. I have several old pairs of cigarette pants, and three pairs of slim jeans that I continue to wear with pleasure too. When I’m in a wide pants mood, I wear roomy bottoms. When I’m in a streamlined mood, I wear slim straights. I like the variety! Here is my current collection of slim bottoms. The oldest pairs are ten years old.

Over to you. How do you feel about slim and straight pants and jeans?

Outfit Formula: Casual Puffer Vibes

Short and long puffers and parkas are extremely popular cold weather toppers for good reason. They are cosy, comfy, insulating, weatherproof, crease-resistant, and easy to launder. These days, puffers can be worn with just about any outfit. They come in countless colours, a range of thicknesses and lengths, and an assortment of fabrics. Some puffers look more casual and sporty than others.

Here are puffer outfits with interesting styling details that might spark some outfit inspiration. Choose any colour palette if these aren’t to your taste.

1. Utility

A pair of olive utility pants is combined with a slouchy black sweater. Tall black stompy and weatherproof boots match the black top and are worn over the voluminous pants. The fact that the pants taper at the hems makes them easier to tuck into streamlined tall boots, giving a pantaloon effect. A roomy burgundy puffer tops the lot. Add a bag and Winter accessories that work with the outfit.

2. Extra Lengths

Light wash wide leg jeans at a floor sweeping slouchy length are paired with a fitted and tucked black and white patterned top. White sneakers that match the white of the top are the shoes of choice. A very long maxi navy puffer coat with bold orange lining tops the lot. An outfit to wear in cold dry weather to prevent soggy hems. I see a casual black crossbody bag to complete the look.

3. Light and Pretty

A pair of light wash relaxed straight cropped jeans is paired with an untucked denim shirt. A cream sweatshirt is worn over the shirt for a layered effect. A shiny pretty pink puffer tops the lot. Cream and pastel pink weatherproof hiking boots with blue laces match the outfit perfectly. The high shaft of the boots provides ample coverage in cold weather when wearing cropped bottoms. A cream bag would work well too.

4. Dressier

Last, a dressier version pairs red trousers with a semi-tucked and tailored grey sweater. Refined black boots and belt provide a polished finishing touch. A black mixed media puffer with faux fur trim tops the lot. Add handbag, jewellery, watch, and Winter accessories as desired.

Non-Neutral Colours and Your Style

Non-neutral colours add flair, contrast, and visual interest to a look. They can be bold or subtle. Warm or cool. They can boost your mood and express your feelings. They stand out. Wear them as statement pieces or as outfit accents.

Personalise With Colours

Some wardrobes are rich in non-neutral colours. The more willing you are to combine unexpected and clashing colours in an outfit, the easier it is to manage a wardrobe with a large assortment of them because you have more outfit options available to you.

When adding a new non-neutral colour to your style, ask yourself whether you already have the neutral items to wear with it. If not, purchase the new colour along with a neutral support act to make sure you have cohesive outfits that are ready to wear.
