Outfit Formula: Easy Breezy Summer Skirt

Here are four casual skirt outfits for hot weather. The lengths are midi, but feel free to sport them shorter. The silhouettes are lightweight, soft and flared because that’s the most ventilating option in hot weather. Movement and swoosh for the win. Each outfit has been styled with sandals, but by all means choose sandal booties, espadrilles, mules, ballet flats, loafers or sneakers if that’s more to your taste.

1. Playfully Patterned

Combine a patterned skirt with a slogan tee in a similar colour palette. The tee should be fairly short and fitted if you want to create structure above the flare of the skirt. Or side knot the tee at the hem if it’s too big and long. Or semi-tuck the front. The heeled casual sandals are a nice touch, as is the straw hat. A straw bag would be fun too. Lots of colour, but you can sport neutrals.

2. Frilled Denim

Combine a frilly full prairie skirt or the like with a tee or tank, and top it off with a denim jacket. It’s best when the tees and tanks are fitted and short if you’re going to wear them out. If they’re a little fluid and long, create a semi-tuck. The denim jacket can be short and fitted, or longer and oversized. Sleeve scrunch creates structure. I like the addition of the platform Birkies here, and how they create a complement with the striped crossbody.

3. Handkerchief Utility

Combine a handkerchief hem skirt with a tank, cami or shell top, and top things off with a utility jacket. The utility jacket can be short and fitted, or longer and oversized. The former is classic, and the latter trendy. I like the gladiators in this outfit because they are dainty and classic. A wedge sandal is another classic way to go. A chunky sporty sandal or slide would be the trendy addition.

4. Wrapped & Strapped

This is the breeziest of the four. Combine a strappy camisole with an A-line wrap skirt. Tuck the cami into the skirt for structure. Add slides, mules or thong sandals and you’re done. Add jewellery, watch and eyewear as desired.

Handbag Storage

Handbags can be tricky to store, especially when you have many of them and closet space is limited. If you swap them out frequently, they should ideally be visible and accessible. They need enough space so that they’re not squashed together and losing their shape, or fighting for room at the bottom of the coat closet.

Handbags are my favourite wardrobe item. I lead an urban walking lifestyle so bags are not only the visual cherry on top, but a practical necessity. I currently have 25 wardrobe pets which I’ve carefully collected over time. They range from one month to 26 years in age. I swap them out as regularly as twice a day because they’re very much part of my signature look. I keep them looking pristine, wiping them down after every few wears and handling them with care.

Here are my current handbags in a collection:

Over the years I’ve stored my bags in different ways, depending on what worked best with the spaces available to me. I’m currently storing 23 of them on a very wide shelf above a set of built-in drawers in the walk-in wardrobe of our new apartment. They are perfectly visible, have plenty of room, and make me happy every time I walk into the space. My bags are structured, so most of them stand upright on their own. A few of them are stuffed to retain their shape. The Chanel bag is kept in its original black box on a shelf above the hanging space. And my two very casual crossbody bags are hung on a rack where I keep my trousers and jeans.

I’ve also stored my bags on the shelves of a walk-in wardrobe, on an over-the-door hanging purse organizer, on hooks behind doors, in drawers, in wardrobe boxes, stacked neatly in an armoire, or on the shelves in a closet. I’ve seen clients keep them in see-through containers so that they stack easily at the bottom of a closet or under a bed. I’ve seen them stored neatly in an antique chest, placed in closet cubicles, or hanging on hooks, racks, and purse organizers in the coat closet.

Over to you. How do you store your handbags?

Team High or Team Low Contrast Nail Polish

Today we’re talking about nail polish style. Note that finger and toenail polish both count. You are on Team High Contrast if you wear polish that is high contrast to your skin tone. It can be bright or neutral, but it makes a statement and is not subtle. You are on Team Low Contrast if you wear finger and toenail polish that is soft or subtle. In other words, it blends more seamlessly with your skin tone, and is less noticeable.

I’ve been batting for Team Naked Nails for three and a half years, and I love it. I have regular manicures and pedicures so that my hands and feet look well groomed and polished — but without colour. Instead I apply a clear nail strengthener that adds a very subtle shine. This is about as low contrast as it gets unless I leave off the nail strengthener completely. I do that sometimes too. I bat for Team Low Contrast Nail Polish and it’s part of my signature style.

Over to you. Do you bat for Team High or Team Low Contrast Nail Polish? Tell us why, and no batting for both teams.

Ten Fab Things About Fashion & Style Today

The fashion and style world has changed a lot in the last twenty years, and mind-blowingly so in the last ten. Here’s what I think is stellar about this changing industry.

  1. The emphasis on INDIVIDUALISM and the true rebirth of personal style is empowering. Evolve, reinvent, juxtapose and remix the melting pot of today’s fashion your way, because there is no one way to look stylish. Almost anything goes if you wear it with conviction, comfort, confidence and verve.
  2. Trends are no longer seasonal and fads no longer exist. To some extent trends are becoming harder to define, and at some point they will be irrelevant. This creates a meaningful platform for fashion and style freedom.
  3. The shifting goal posts of conventional figure flattery are liberating, versatile, and creative. Conventionally flattering outfit proportions are not the only way to look and feel fab. On the contrary. Outfits that defy conventional figure flattery are equally stylish, and often edgier and more creative. It’s ALL good.
  4. Along with the celebration of individualism, is the celebration of the diversity of body type and the so-called golden mean of beauty. More and more retail assortments are carrying extended sizes. An awareness of gender fluidity is there. Models aren’t all extremely tall, thin, one skin tone, one age, and with one set of regular features. Of course, there is room for improvement, but the industry is a lot more diverse than it used to be, which is a step in the right direction.
  5. The variety, practicality, privacy and convenience of a growing online shopping world cannot be beat. There are extended size curves and colours. There are no sales staff if you prefer to bypass them. You can avoid traffic, crowds, bad weather, and public dressing rooms. It’s an ideal way to shop if you’re physically not up to browsing city stores. And it’s fun to see boxes arrive on your doorstep.
  6. Lots of free shipping in the US, and I know we’re lucky that way.
  7. The casualization of dress codes might be cause to lament if you enjoy dressing up, but the emphasis on outfit comfort and practicality to complement our extremely busy lives is a GOOD thing. Remember that the INDIVIDUALISM trend can take you back to dressing up in whichever way you want to.
  8. The movement to a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry is remarkable and meaningful. Although these questions are extremely complicated with no easy solutions, everyone can do their bit for the planet and our environment. Decide what ethical and sustainable fashion means to you, and run with it.
  9. The emergence and ongoing presence of engaged social fashion and style communities like YLF make the world a smaller, more supportive and friendly place.
  10. The ability to continue having fun with fashion at any age.

Checking In: Style Word and Colour for 2019

Back in January, and just for fun, I chose a word and colour for 2019 and asked you to join the party. Six months down the line, and we’re checking in on how things have progressed.

Word: Relaxed

I chose “relaxed” because I need to be less tense, uptight and anxious about certain aspects of my life. I am often the cause of my own stress, which is something that I control and can therefore change. I want to stop worrying about things that are not important, because they take up precious time and energy that I could be investing elsewhere.

I took this to heart and I’m trying very hard to focus my energy where it can make the most difference. This requires little conversations with myself during the day. It has been an effort, but I have been disciplined about it and I’m beginning to reap the reward. I do feel more calm, despite 2019 being a stressful year for a variety of reasons.

Every time I feel stressed, I stop and ask myself the question: how important is this relative to the other things happening in my life? Many times, the answer is that it really isn’t that important. It’s extraordinary how well this simple little strategy has worked. If it is something important, I tackle things one step at a time. Taking the step back allows me to subdue the emotions and focus on the positive, not allowing myself to spiral into negativity. If there is someone else involved, I discuss it with them when I have something constructive to add.

I’ve also done some soul searching to pinpoint exactly what it is that causes stress and creates happiness. Of course, I can’t eliminate all the things that cause stress and simply do happy things because unfortunately life doesn’t work that way. But I am better at eliminating unnecessary stresses, getting my head right about them, and making a point of doing stress-relieving activities and happy things EACH DAY. For me that’s physical activity. I try to walk as many places as possible, and I practice yoga three times a week.

I am extremely relaxed about fashion, my own style, and my work with clients. Those areas of my life cause me no stress and give me lots of pleasure. I relax into every style analysis, closet edit, closet review, purchase, sale, hunt, shop, outfit creation session, and don’t let any of it boss me around. I spend time on fashion and style every day, and that is stress-relieving.

It’s also important that I create things from scratch each day, which might mean cooking a fabulous meal, writing a blog post, making something for our new home, or figuring out how to help a client with a wardrobe dilemma. The thing that makes me most happy is spending quality time with my boys Greg and Sam, and I am constantly trying to make more of that happen.

Colour: Red

I chose red for 2019 because I love the colour and all that it symbolizes. I want to be relaxed, but I also want to maintain my high levels of energy, energize those around me, show unconditional affection to my favourite people, be creative, go on exciting adventures, continue wearing my heart on my sleeve, and make a positive difference.

My progress is good. I added more red items to my wardrobe that spark great joy. The exact items are shown in the collection. Some of them became instant workhorses, like the red jeans, patterned blouse, linen shirt and Japanese micro-check wide cropped pants. Now that the weather has warmed, I’m sure I’ll wear the heck out of the dress too.

I continue to have high levels of energy for which I am very grateful because it allows me to do the things that make me feel I’ve accomplished something to my satisfaction in a day. That in itself is stress-relieving and creates happiness. We moved to an exciting new home, which means small but meaningful new adventures daily. As far as showing unconditional support to my favourite people and animals, you’ll have to ask Greg, Sam, and my family and friends about that.

Over to you. If you chose a word and colour for 2019, I’d like to hear your thoughts and progress.
