Please tell me this leather skirt does not reduce me to “mutton dressed as lamb”??? At 48 years old, I’ve never had a leather skirt…so finally bought one! This black leather skirt was found in Value Village for $2.99 and fits like it was made for me – it’s Danier leather and in mint condition. What a score! The blouse was purchased at my favourite consignment shop and is a Laura Petite – I love the puple, beige and black animal print of it and the ruffle in the front, as well as the ruffle on the sleeve ends. I think the softness of the blouse works well with the harder edge of the skirt. I originally had a black belt on overtop the blouse but found it competed with the ruffle in the front so removed it so the blouse could stand on its own. Between the skirt and the blouse, this outfit cost me $5!!!

How does this look together? Proportions and colours good? Are these individual items “keepers”? As always, thanks for looking and all comments/suggestions welcome.

P.S. Sorry for the out of focus picture - poor Kristin sneezed just as she took the shot and we didn't have time for a re-do!

I don't think a leather skirt itself is only for the young. It really depends on length and style more than anything, and I think your skirt is wholly appropriate. To me, the top is slightly too long to be worn untucked with the skirt, but other than that, I really like your outfit! I think the combination of colors is really flattering on you. You look great!

Before I comment on the gorgeousness of this outfit, does the front slit of the skirt behave when you sit down and cross your legs?

A leather skirt from Danier for $2.99? That was a great find.
In my opinion a pencil, knee lenght leather skirt is a very chic item.And yours is all of this.
I also like the blouse and think it looks good with the skirt in the sense that is more flowy and feminine than the skirt and balances it perfectly.
As Ana talket about it's lenght, maybe with a wide belt it look extra fab...

Angie - amazingly, the slit does behave itself when I sit and cross my legs. It's got this great heavy, double stitching on the underside of where the slit begins that seems to help it lay flat and not gape too much.

I will try to post a pic later this afternoon with the belt to see if that's better.

You look great! Leather skirts are not only for the very young. You wear it in just the right way, with a fun but not vulgar hem length, and the slit in the side front is a really nice touch that keeps it sexy in an age-appropriate way.

I love it with the purple!

I always want to see a soft sweater whenever there's a leather skirt involved - or a flowing silk blouse. I dunno why . . . seems so elegant. Of course, I haven't owned leather in 20 years (except for shoes and bags) so it's all just conjured in my head and not road tested, so take that for what it's worth

I like them both - as for proportions, I think tucking or belting would make it even more fab than it already is. Way to thrift!

This looks great. That being said, I think I'd like the top half even better if you tucked or if you had an obi belt on. It almost seems as if the top is a little long for the skirt.

Oh, snap! You got that skirt for $2.99? You lucky duck! I don't think you are ever too old for a classy leather skirt, and this is a fab look. You certainly look at home in it!

Sarah - mutton dressed as lamb refers to women my age trying to dress like they're in their 20's (a.k.a. cougar)

Una - isn't this the second time I've dressed in an outfit similar to one you've done (last week's tunic with long vest)? I promise I'm not stalking your outfits!(lol)

I do understand suggestions of tucking this blouse in but with the ruffle in the front it's bulky to tuck plus I'm not comfortable in this body conscious skirt with anything tucked in.

Angie - I love the idea of black vintage beads - are you thinking short enough to sit above the opening of the blouse, or longer beads? What are your thoughts on belting the blouse?

Try a wide belt for sure! But I like the simple combination here too.

Short vintage beads should do the trick.

Perfection. Try a silver chain belt, it might not be the comfiest thing, but you can loosen it while you're working at your desk. It won't compete with the ruffles, but it will draw a waistline on top of the blouse and create that nice long legline. You can also swing the free end of it around in a circle when you get home to hubby!

Ummm...I just noticed something...did anybody else notice how huge my bosoms seem to appear in this picture??? Good grief! It's obviously just an optical illusion with the pattern of the blouse and the light but it's darned impressive!

Okay, it's official. I am moving to where you live and coming thrifting with you! Here I thought I was doing well with my $7 suede pencil skirt, but NO. You have to top me with Danier leather at a mere $2.99 and the slit even behaves!?! Woman, have mercy on those of us who haven't yet attained your thrifting genius!
