WIW: Drama coat

I got this full length 100% cashmere coat from Sierra Trading Post several years ago. It was a huge purchase but has been worn many times. It is surprisingly warm for how light it is, and has a lot of swirl and dash to it. Kinda feel like Sherlock striding around haughtily. I know it's long, and that's after hemming! But I rather like it. What do you think - does it look dated?

And what I wore today, meeting both scarf and dress challenges (this is a sweater over a dress).

I like the big, long coat, but I think it could benefit from some new buttons. Maybe some brass military style buttons or giant tortoiseshell buttons? LOVE your outfit from today! That's an awesome sweater, and it really looks good all drapey over the dress.

I'm not sure I'm the best judge for if something looks dated or not, but I think it still looks great.

And your outfit looks great. I like the purple (or I think it's purple) top.

If anyone deserves a cashmere coat it is someone who lives in Alaska. I can imagine that it must feel very cool to swirl around in it.

I don't know about its proportions. It's not the length so much as what appears to be the depth of the armhole and then the button placement. But it could be my eye is terribly amiss. I think I would want to hang onto it regardless for its quality and versatility.

Love today's outfit - amazing how the scarf and dress echo each other so well!

Suz, interesting about the armholes! They are amazingly non-restrictive in the shoulders (and this is size 4P), which may be because of what you see there. I think this coat works much better in motion.

Aida, good thought on the buttons!

This sweater is actually more of an ink blue veering on navy. My camera obviously bites.

I love that coat and would not change anything if it were mine. But I agree Aida, that maybe a button change would make it more you. It is beautiful. Your dress from today looks great, also.

I think the coat looks good on you. And for this kind of coat, I would leave the buttons as is (feeling shy to be in the minority).

Okay, button-changers: would love some suggestions for button styles! Am willing to do it but not sure what would up the ante...

I am seeing some silver plated bullet casings sitting horizontally held in place by a 1/2 wide brown leather strap that wraps around the front for buttons. Not sure where to find/create such a thing.

Eta: or perhaps some other silver bar about 1.5" long should the casing idea offend.

I wonder if it is possible to somehow remove the bottom button altogether? I feel like it is lengthening the torso a lot and thereby shortening the leg, which is fine except so does the flared midi length. Or maybe it has become too big as others are suggesting. I dunno, maybe I'm in purging mode, but I'm thinking if I had a Burberry puffer at home I wouldn't wear this one?

The outfit is super duper awesomeness, though! Loving the pattern mix and the voluminous top!

How many and how large are the buttons on the coat now?

I don't think this looks dated, but it does look too big. That's because the buttons are stopping in a strange place. I would remove or add another button and buttonhole, personally.

I am not sure if the coat is worth a spot in your fab wardrobe. You are swimming in it, it is simply too big and too long but have we met? i'm miss Tailored. . If you want buttons, I am going to the garment district tomorrow. I can snap a few pics for you and mail them. Finding buttons online is sad, there is little selection,

Well, I absolutely love it, down to the buttons (I don't like buttons that stand out... it's a lifelong thing of mine, with no basis in fact). And I love the way it comes in at the waist. I also like the length, personally, because I think if it were shorter it would look stumpy. (But don't listen to me about either tailoring or length, because I'm here tonight looking for advice on how to wear an Irish walking cape. )

My first reaction..nope, not you...but this is a picture and if you are definding it, you must love it. It won't hurt much to try new buttons....and fun styling exercise also

Love your outfit. Beautiful colors and love the flow and drape of the sweater. The coat is stunning. My only question is that it looks like it is a little long in the body? But that could just be the photo:) I do like the shape and the length.

I was also wondering if the torso of the coat is too long/waist is too low or whether it is just the photo. Your dress outfit looks absolutely fantastic. Love the colors and patterns.

I am on the fence about the coat. I don't think it's dated. I am not sure it's the right size for you. Length, particularly. But on the other hand I can see it being a dramatic coat that's just fun to wear, and I wouldn't toss it if you enjoy wearing it.

Wow, I can't take my eyes off of your sweater outfit! I like the idea of switching out the buttons on your coat. I have a friend who scours vintage stores for interesting buttons and then uses them to switch out the buttons on her coats, dresses and tops.

I must to be only one who DOES think it look dated. But that is only because I had quite a similar looking coat that I bought in 1997 and that is making me have that association. But what do I know. I live in Oz, where we don't really need coats that much!

I love your sweater with dress outfit.

I understand your affection for the coat since it is a lovely piece, but it looks long in the torso to me and therefore seems to overwhelm you a bit. Just my humble opinion. I'm bad about letting go of coats, so I'm one to give advice!

I see I'm not the only one who sees the proportion issue. This is what I felt as well - long in body and maybe wrong in armholes.

Can you show us some more pics if you are really considering purging or altering? Sometimes it might just be the angle, you know?

The coat seems too long in the torso like a dropped waist. Maybe it is because of where the buttons stop. But I wouldn't get rid of such a fab piece as dropped waists may be the next big thing.
I love your dress and sweater look! The proportions look spot on to me.

How about a pic with the bottom button left undone? Just to give us an idea if removing it would improve the proportions. Or would you totally lose the warmth that way...
I'd have trouble giving this one up too...

I appreciate that it's a warm coat. You need that in Alaska!!

I don't think it's a flattering fit though - proportions are too long - and to my eye dated too.

Have not read the comments though.
