The dress I hoped would be perfect

This is a follow up to my most recent dress thread - sorry to be so needy! I have the return label already printed but Suz suggested posting a picture.

Husband took these for me so we could get better light outside so the angles are different than my usual pictures. I'm not being an exhibitionist in the close up #5 of the neckline - I want you to be able to see what the lining is doing.

So what do you think - yay or nay?

I was SO excited and hoped to be posting the perfect dress today, but alas - it was not to be. I found a stretch, knot front Ted Baker in the same print as the Ted Baker midi in my original thread (for those of you who may remember). But, it didn't work out. The knot sits too low on me and the pink lining, as pretty as it is, hangs out the neckline.

So the Adrianna Papell (size 10) will work just fine unless something else jumps out at me. My husband - sweet guy that he is - said there wasn't any reason not to get *two* dresses : )

Yeah, I think I agree with this dress being a return - your other ones look so much more fab. The knot sits kinda low and unflattering. I really don't like this...

The dress is Killer. The knot hangs beautifully to my eye. Modern, fashionable and chic. Can you iron the lining so that it doesn't peak out?

This dress is quite a departure for you. How does it make you FEEL? If the lining stubbornly sticks out, it is probably why the dress is on 6pm.

Angie, thanks for the enthusiastic thumbs up! I did a bit of ironing before the pictures but I'll fuss some more before making a decision.

lyn*, thanks for your honest opinion. That was my first thought too but it is growing on me.

DonnaF I think you're on to something with the observation about it being a departure for me. That may be why my first instinct was to return.

It actually came from Zappos so at least there won't be a charge to return should I decide to do so. Oh - it is comfortable AND machine washable.

I'm wondering if a little fashion tape inside between the dress and lining would hold it in place. I really love this dress on you and hope that you can keep and wear it.

Ok, so my gut reaction is I don't like it. BUT that is entirely because I have poison eye for front-and-center seams. If it didn't have the seam I would think it was great.

So, that said, I realize my poison eye is entirely psychological (said seams make me twitchy because they look like surgical incisions to me) and most people don't have it. If the seams don't bother you, you might try taping the dress to your chest with fashion tape. (If you don't have it handy just try with some scotch tape for now. But buy fashion tape if you're actually going to go out in it - scotch tape is scratchy!)

I kind of love this on you! I think it looks smashing. I think you could tack the lining in with some tiny stiches.

If that lining can be fixed, I do hope you will keep and wear. It IS a departure for you, but if you feel comfortable in it, I think it is just the departure you need to vault you into the next leg of your style journey.

Just checked back on your other post. I really like this dress on you IF it is comfortable & you won't be tugging at it (nothing worse imo). Sometimes pinning the shoulder seams at the neckline & tapering towards the shoulder line will fix the gaping lining or try some really small shoulder pads they can help too.Fingers crossed it looks fab

Joy, I have never used fashion tape. Would the shape show through the fabric? It isn't very heavy, more like a mesh.

Caro, thanks - I'll try your suggestions. This was the last dress in my size otherwise I would order another.

Another question- would a cami or bandeau top look ok with this or would it kind of ruin the vibe of the dress?

I think it would ruin the vibe of the dress, but the only way to know for sure is to try a few on. I HOPE that lining can be dealt with. Maybe ask Diane G?

I really like this dress on you, and I don't think the knot is too low - it makes your figure look amazing! The issue with the lining might just be that this particular dress was sewn incorrectly - could you order another in the same size to compare? Also, a good tailor should be able to fix the lining so it doesn't show.

Karie, this was the last dress at Zappos - but I just found another at Asos - hopefully the lining won't be an issue. This area is lacking in good tailors.

I'd say it's looking like I'm leaning toward a strong keep

Wow the photo was not what I was expecting based on your post- I love this on you! I think it is super flattering. It looks like it fits perfectly. It seems like the lining should be fixable, maybe with a bit of stitching to keep it in place.

Pil, this is gorgeous on you - I could only hope to look so good in a fitted dress. However, as a cleavage-phobe for myself, I know if I felt exposed by a neckline I would be super-conscious and awkward. NOT that this is too low, but if you feel that way, it will be hard to overcome. Think on it because it does look beautiful!

I will have to join Lyn in the spanners' club. My first reaction upon seeing the dress, even before reading your write-up, is that the knot sits too low, in an unflattering position. I would vote return also.

I am not a fan of knot draped dresses in general but this one is different. I also like the fact that this knot is not right under the chest as usual but lower and forms an interesting architectural detail. Together with this floral print it is quite a winner on you!
I hope you can sort out the lining issue...

I really like this dress on you, Pil. It is so flattering! I agree with Caro's idea of trying shoulder pads in it, because I think pulling up the shoulder seam just a tad could fix the problem. If you have a slightly sloping shoulder shape, the pads will just bring your shoulder into line with the way the dress was designed. You can buy small shoulder pads at a fabric store--get the teardrop shape, not the jacket/coat shaped ones.

Pil. Fashion tape is a clear double-sided tape that really holds and is very flexible. It won't show. I've never used it to stick to my skin, more to hold a gaping neckline or turn up pants to hold a temporary hem. It doesn't leave sticky stuff on your clothes when you remove it.

Pil, this dress is stuck to the tops of my boobs with fashion tape to prevent it from falling down when I bend over. The fabric is a thin silky material and the tape did not show. It peels off easily at the end of the night too. If it's very hot and you sweat a lot you may need to reapply.

Pil, this dresss is absolutely stunning on you. However if the lining wont sit this would drive me crazy and I would return.

If you can't get the lining to sit right - return. And if you feel this dress is "too much" - return. But if you have by any chance fallen in love with the dress - it gets my blessing by a billion percent - for what that is worth. xo
