I'm not sure I want to go here but Tanya's comment on a thread that she wants to stick to8,9, or 10's in wowness got me thinking about a ranking system for our outfits. Some of us have plenty of clothes and only want to add a few wow (9-10) pieces. Others are starting all over and will be okay with a variety of wow and solid pieces (>5).

I thought this would be a clearer way to give feedback so a person could tailor responses to their own needs.

Thoughts? Is this a bad idea? If not what would our ranking system be? (I was thinking some thing along the lines of
1-- give it away-- to
...
10-- look like you stepped out of Vogue
It could also be by request only

On the other hand I would never want something like this to compromise the wonderfulness of this forum so shoot it down if need be.

I think leaving it up to the individual to ask for it would be key.

I meant to add for me personally I would find that very helpful even though each person's scale will be relative only to them.

Sihaya, I agree that by request would be key. I think it would be helpful for new purchases that haven't been committed to, especially. I don't think I would even ask about things I already own unless I was thinking of getting rid of them.

I think it's a good idea, but it would probably be the best to do it only if the person posting requested it. That way we would avoid hurting somebody's feelings. I personally would want to hear it all the time. Even after a lot of closet cleaning, I still have too many clothes, many of which I would rank in 5-7, which I am not satisfied with anymore.

In retrospect, I should have named this thread "rating system."

The other idea I had would be to prefix the rating with casual, smart casual, business casual, etc. (what are the rest?) Because I can't imagine that a casual 10 would be the same as a formal 10. This might mean you could get more than one rating depending on occasion. I don't want to make this too complicated but adding this might take the pressure off of a SAHM who only needs to be casual if she's at the playground all day versus a business executive. In other words, the rating system is adjusted for lifestyle.

I love the idea of assigning quantitative values to outfits! This would be very helpful if I were thinking of purchasing something, like you said Patience, rather than for things I already have, unless I were cleaning out my closet. Ideally, you'd want to have about 90% of what you own a 10, "the cherries," or "killer," etc. That's my goal.

Maybe to simplify it, we could rate it from 1 to 5, because in order for everyone to use the rating system, we would have to specifically define each numerical value. Hmmm...I might be overcomplicating it.

I like the 1-5 scale, it's more straightforward. So 1 could be "no way", 5 - "killer" and 3 - "look good and worth keeping but nothing special".

Great idea! It's funny that after you mentioned it, I realized that I was looking for the implied ratings from people's responses but couldn't get a clearer picture.

I agree that it should be given only when requested and 1 to 5 with clear definition makes it easy. Also classify them in different categories is the key.

Let me attempt with the definitions and please add suggestions to make them better:

1 - Give away
2 - Plain
3 - Good - You can do better
4 - Excellent - I want to steal the look
5 - Vogue Wow - I'm speechless

I like the concept. Let me think about this as I have to run.

It’s very important that the forum stays fun, helpful, motivating, simple and encouraging. I leave it up to our mathematicians to sort out the details. I already use a similar system with words and I’d be happy to attach quantities to these adjectives. I’m an ENFJ, so “the good feeling part” of this process is paramount. Bring on the ideas!

I definitely agree with Angie that the forum stay helpful and positive. I think it would even with a rating system, because I can't imagine anyone on here being mean or negative at all. I know personally I would qualify any rating with an explanation that is what I would have written anyway. I think we were just brainstorming a way for people to be able to express their thoughts in a more defined way. For example, two people could say your outfit is nice, and nice to one person means "great" and to the other person it means, "nice, but you could do better." Honestly, I'd probably just type the response I would have written without a rating system, and if the person asked for it, I would just add my rating at the end. We could do it with specific words that everyone used, too--numbers are probably easier for people to grasp because we're used to those sorts of systems. But I agree they could come off as less personal if we're not careful. I think it's probably up to the person asking for the opinion to request a rating, which is a point I know everyone agrees on.

I like the 1-5 system Julia suggested. Again, I would only do this at a specific request and follow it up with a lot explanation. Personally, I'd use this the most to evaluate pieces, both ones I'm thinking of getting rid of and new purchases.

I love hearing that both Julia and Tanya are ISFJ’s. Sweet!

Does this sound right so far: a ranking system of 1-5 on items that are new upon request only. Anyone else want to fine tune the details? I leave that to the S’s.

Wow I'm an ENFJ too! I didn't know that so many people went thru the Myers Briggs process. I like the idea of a rating system because even though I have made a pledge since reading this forum to ONLY purchase items that make me feel like a "10" - having assistance and input on putting together the outfit to make all the individual pieces form a "10" would be helpful. I liked Julia's idea of having definitions so that if you asked for a ranking you'd be able to confirm what exactly it meant, and the 'rankers' could have guidance on it as well.

Myers Briggs is the most popular assessment tool out there. I guess I'm in the minority here as an ENTP!

I'm curious too, Julia. I'm an ISFJ too and I've been thinking about what I need to do with my life as well. What did you do (that you took the break from)?

My first career choice according to the website I posted is Interior Decorator. I think it's very true. I wanted to major in Architecture when I was young but for various reasons I studied in Computer Science and worked in IT for 15 years. I have to say that I'm pretty good at IT and was making a pretty good living, however something was always missing.

I feel that it's too late for me to change my career now so I'll channel my passions through my hobbies.

That's so funny, Julia...I have the same choice. That's what I wanted to do originally (Interior Design) but the most logical choice for school was in my hometown and I wanted to get away. I went into business and was good at my job, but I never felt my job gave me the outlet I needed. I've been looking into taking classes but I'm wondering if it's too late for me now too (I'm 34).
