Sporty Luxe went mainstream a few years ago, and has grown into one of the biggest trends of our fashion era. Judging by what I saw coming down the catwalks for Fall & Winter 2014 and Resort 2015, it is only gaining momentum. We’ve reached the point where we can create a completely fashionable outfit based on items from sporting goods stores like Lululemon, Adidas and Nike. What was considered a faux pas ten years ago has become on trend today. And surprisingly, Sporty Luxe is probably the most popular trend among designers for their personal style.

The upscale silk sweatshirt is what I call the modern pull-on blouse. The mixed media darling marries the Sporty Luxe trend with the bumper Knitwear trend, creating an elegantly relaxed look. It’s an interesting hybrid of dressy and casual and is as comfy as can be in a fashionably fluid or oversized fit. In true sweatshirt style, it’s frequently designed with magical raglan sleeves that can make wider shoulders seem more narrow and narrow shoulders seem more wide.

Wikipedia calls “Mom jeans” a “humorously pejorative term for a specific type of fit of women’s jeans, considered to be both unfashionable, and unflattering to the wearer’s body shape. This style usually consists of a high waist (rising above the belly button), making the buttocks appear disproportionately longer, larger, and flatter than they otherwise might. It also tends to have excess space in the zipper/crotch and leg areas”.

Jackets that are gathered or pleated on the crown of the sleeve at the shoulder point are a fringe trend. This style of jacket was popular almost a decade ago, in long and short sleeve versions. The short sleeved styles looked extra puffy because of the rounder shape of the sleeve. Versions with gathers on the crown of the sleeve were also quite popular in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

Mules are high-vamped slip-on shoes with an open back that exposes the heel. Mules do not have ankle straps so there is nothing securing your foot to the shoe other than the grip of your feet. Mules were one of the footwear trends back in the ‘90s, along with platform sneakers, loafers with chunky treads, and combat boots.
