There’s a new flat sandal trend that takes its inspiration from the classic Birkenstock sandal. It is surfacing in many variations — some styles are sleeker and more refined. And it makes the original Birkenstock sandal completely fashionable.

As I mentioned in a recent Spring footwear report, slip-on sneakers are very much on trend. They’re like a more casual and sporty version of a loafer or laceless flat oxford. They work well with orthotic inserts or an additional cushioning insole, so they can be extra kind to your feet.

I love it when the classics make a fashionable statement, like the good old Gucci-esque loafer is doing at the moment. My hunch is that it will continue to do so because updated classics can be successfully incorporated into any modern style. Remixing updated classics with trendy pieces is in itself a trend that defines our fashion era. So allow me to shout this from the rooftops once again: Classic wardrobe items are powerful because they can be transformed into YOUR look when mixed and matched YOUR way.

It’s been ten years since skinnies and variations on the tapered pant silhouette resurfaced on the runways of fashion week. Bringing back the ‘80s tapered leg was a HUGE change after the ‘90s, which was filled with bootcut, flared, palazzo and wide-leg jeans and trouser silhouettes. Looks like we’ve come full circle because skinnies are extremely rare on the Fall 2014 runways so far. At their most tapered, the pants are fluid straight legs and not sausage-casing skinnies. Now the runway is all about wider pant legs.

For three years in a row, midi length skirts and dresses have appeared on the runways of fashion week in New York, London, Paris and Milan. Fall 2014 fashion shows are currently in full swing, and as far as skirts and dresses go, midis are dominating the catwalks, both in pencil and flared silhouettes.
