I know that some of you have been right in there with the shift to video calls because of Covid. I have not been, but have one coming up (actually on a Microsoft platform—“zoom” in the title is generic). I’d like to look competent, confidant, dynamic (which are code words for young) and reliable. Can you help me out?

Are moire effects a thing anymore or would a tiny pattern/false plain be ok?

Are bare arms any more acceptable than in person?

How close to the camera should I sit/how much of me should be visible?

What about rules for formality? In person, I’d likely arrive in a topper, even if the weather was too warm to keep it on, with a comment about the weather when I slipped it off. That sounds really dumb when we all know I’m sitting in my own home the whole time. Is there any kind of nod to formality thing like that on a video call?

F2F, there’s no way I’d wear shorts for this. I doubt I’ll have to get up during the call. If I do, it will be because of some big thing that will be very evident. Is it ok if I then happen to have shorts on? (As part of an outfit—not “I’m not wearing any pants” boxer shorts)

F2F, I’d look at the person I was speaking to (there will be 3 of them) to let them know who I’m talking to. Does that work on video or do I need to constantly call everyone by their name? I plan to have their names written clearly on a piece of paper in front of me.

Readers (glasses): can I flip them on/off, or should I make a choice before the call & then stick to it?

What else do I need to be aware of?

Thanks!
