Zara clutch for travelling?

I dropped by Zara's today for a super quick look and found this clutch. It's actually far better IRL. I was thinking that this might be really good when travelling - for keeping passport, tickets and other travelling papers. What do you think?

I had to look up the currency conversion, but ~$100 for a polyurethane clutch? It better be really nice. On the other hand, I love the graphic quality and with the strap and wrist strap it could work really well for travel. I've got a passport/ticket case, like an oversized billfold basically, that I tend to put in my backpack when I fly, but something with a wrist strap that I wouldn't have to constantly take in and out of a bigger bag would be handy.

Thanks for the input rhubarbgirl! Yes, the wrist strap is really great! I also like that I could fasten it to the inside of a backpack or a larger handbag or carry-on (which I always end up sending - lol).

Those passport/ticket cases I've seen are so... boring and just scream "travel gear". I though this could be more fun and stylish

I always take a flat clutch with me when I travel. During the trip, and day time, it is tucked inside my Pilage Longchamp tote, so I can easily find my day cash and credit card. The clutch also makes a great evening bag.

Unless I'm actually in transit, however, I don't keep my passport, debit card, or ID in it because of pickpockets and other undesirable types. Those items I keep in an invisible place under my clothes. I've actually had the unpleasant experience of encountering a pick pocket in a crowded subway platform, but fortunately nothing was missing. I've also witnessed handbags being grabbed from their owners on several occasions, so I'm cautious about what I keep in mine. One of the tricks in the Paris subway that I saw was to wait until the woman has passed through the turnstile before grabbing the handbag. Since you can't move backward and since most women raise their bags up into the air when they move through, it was an easy snatch and grab for the thief. By the time the woman realized what had happened, the thief was gone.

Yeah, aren't the carry-on rules more restrictive in Europe? I read a "how to pack for a week in a carry-on" blog post recently and then all the European commenters said "nope, wouldn't work here". I'm planning for my trip and getting a little nutso about it.

Yeah, TravelSmith and some of the luggage stores around here have passport cases that are very "I'm going hiking". Mine is black leather so is not objectionable but these days with tickets being printed from the internet on regular paper, it's not really the right size anymore.

I'm a special needs traveler, so I can't say if the purse would serve you for travelling. I use a travel wallet for tickets, passport, etc. That then HAS to go into a bag with a mesh pocket on the outside. On planes, this will be a rolling backpack. Walking around, it must be a cross-body with a wide strap and a mesh pocket. Another pocket on all bags for a water bottle is also much appreciated.

If you are traveling on the budget airlines, I'd be really careful about the size of my carry-on. They can be really strict and can charge insane fees if you have to check the bag at the last minute because it doesn't fit within the guidelines. And fighting for overhead room is hard when everyone is scrambling for seats--EasyJet is not fun, but Ryan Air is a whole other experience!

I'll just find that lottery ticket and run to Zara's Great input on traveling accessories! I'm so naive when it comes to theft... needs to be more careful!

Carry-on restrictions are really strict, even on domestic flights. I have one carry-on suitcase, but since I'm petite I always have problems with getting it in the overhead compartment. My main issue is that I find it really, really hard to follow the onboard liquid restrictions. How can you fit all toiletries and cosmetics in that super small ziploc??

Rachy - I hear you on traveling gear. I can be kinda geeky too..

I have a small clutch I use to hold my stuff; it fits my passport I think it was only about $29 CDN from the outlet.

harmonica...i had to learn this the hard way because i'm not a girly girl, but i am small with a bad shoulder. i roll up to my seat, pretend to pick up the bag, look around helplessly and someone ALWAYS volunteers to put my bag up in the bin. the same guy (99.9% of the time a guy) will volunteer to take it down.

i resisted for so many years...feminism and all that. until my shoulder just couldn't take it anymore.

re the travel hold all, pick pockets are not as prevalent here in the US as in Europe but random snatch and grab are crimes of opportunity so why give them one? tuck everything into a travel pouch under clothing. if you need to, bring copies of your passport and visa and other info (credit cards, drivers license) stashed ziplock bags in locations separate from the originals. you may want to deposit copies with a friend or hubs when you travel, just in case something awful happens.

i leave my valuables at the hotel safe, including passport. copies may be good enough to rent bikes and cars. and of course, buy stuff!

Thanks lyn and bj for important feedback! I'll be sure to take copies and be less careless with my valuables. I also resist asking for help (yes, want to manage everything by myself), but people are usually surprisingly helpful if they are asked

Don't leave your valuables in hotel safes in Italy. *I'm just sayin'...*

re. those 1 oz bottles: I totally do not bother with toiletries any more. I get that stuff on the other end - shampoo, toothpaste, whatever. I do stash those on-the-go mini toothbrushes and a travel deodorant. For make up I carry the magic, do it all single Christina compact and mini lip gloss.

I went backpacking in Asia years ago and the single one place we left our valuables in the hotel safe we got robbed... lol

I'm so particular about my toiletries and cosmetics because my skin is very sensitive and there are lots of products I can't use, despite being labelled as super safe. well - i'll see how I manage on my next trip. I'll keep all the input in my mind - so good to get feedback from you fabbers!

I recently bought an inexpensive, small, plain black cross-body bag to take the next time I fly anywhere, specifically because it has a deep pocket on the back that will be just the right size for a boarding pass. It is also very low-profile so I can easily wear it under my jacket if necessary.

I did think about getting a clutch with a wrist strap for the same purpose but I think the cross-body design will be easier to keep track of, especially on the plane itself. I plan to keep my headphones and other odds and ends I might want during the flight in this bag so I can just pull it and my book out and stash it in the seat pocket.

Although I am partial to huge bags I try to pull them to the front when I go through turnstiles and when standing on trains. This is as much about not whacking innocent bystanders with them as it is security but it probably helps. I don't trust hotel safes so I take things like my passport with me but if I'm travelling somewhere sketchy I will use one of those money belts, although of course I don't then try to use it to store the money I want to use while I'm out and about.
