I ran across this YouTuber who mostly focuses on makeup, but this video about thoughtful buying in fashion and beauty spoke to me.
Quick takes from it are her three strategies:
- Wishlist-and-wait. I try to do this. I also try to practice the “walk away and wait” strategy while in-person shopping, leaving an item behind and seeing if it sticks with me. Often I will forget about it, which is a great sign that it wasn’t for me after all. An online shopping strategy of “wishlist and wait” can be really helpful for being more mindful and less impulsive.
- Longevity Visualization. Thinking about not only how you will use an item but also about how it will endure the process of wearing, laundering, maintaining, etc. Will this fit your needs and tolerances? How often will you use it? Will it still excite you months or years from now?
- “Reality Playtime” - Gaining appreciation for the beautiful things we already own by playing in our closets and actively exploring our wardrobes. Actively playing in your closet to get your fashion fix, before looking for that spark from a new purchase. Sometimes this can clarify what we actually need or want, or don’t need or want.
Of course she goes into a lot more detail on all these, and I think it’s pretty worthwhile for those of us who love to shop but sometimes feel we overdo it!
