You dress your child in that ?

I wasn't sure where to "file" this...forgive me if is OT.

My family went camping on the Cape. My daughter who is 10, went to the bathroom one night and when she came back, she told me that a woman loved her "robe" and asked where she got it. My daughter said that she didn't know, so the woman checked the label. Apparently she found it a little "upsetting" that I would put a child in such clothing.

So my daughter says to me, " Why did the label Horny Toad, upset her ? "

I spent the weekend trying to avoid the woman. LOL !!!!

Anyway, my daughter has my old one in eggplant and I bought a bigger one and dyed it gray. BTW, Horny Toad is one of my favorite brands.

My daughter likes dressing herself and comes out looking like a ragamuffin most days. I'll fix things when she goes to school but right now, she's having fun.

However, I do find it a little creepy for that woman to be looking at the labels on your daughter's clothes!

I had a Horny Toad t-shirt dress a while back and I loved it!

I think that the woman doesn't mind toads, it was the "horny" part she didn't like. Hahaha.

Anyone creepy enough to be checking the labels on a child's clothing has no right to be upset over what she finds. The weirdo lady who would check your DD's label is the one who ought to be uncomfortable! Oh, and regarding the toads themselves, I agree with Anna.

I am really, really angry with this woman. What kind of person would look at an unescorted child's label? It would be rude anyway but with an unescorted child it's really not okay.

I suppose I will give her a pass, since it's the Northeast, on not knowing that that is what we call horned toads in the Southwest.

But I am still really, really angry.

Very inappropriate for her to look at your daughter's clothing label and even more so to let a ten year old know that the label name was upsetting and disapproved of her mother's choice.

I would so have given her a piece of my mind!!!

That woman was out of line when she looked at the label on clothing of an unescorted 10-y.o. She was further out of line to speak out any sort of disapproval over the brand name!

Too bad you weren't in the mood to remind her of what is/isn't appropriate these days . . .

At first, I found it pretty funny that the woman was offended by the word "horny". But now that several of you have pointed it out, it is bizarre to have an adult look at the label of clothing that anyone has on, but particularly a child that you encounter in a bathroom. I need to re-approach this with my daughter. Thanks ladies.

Like a few of the other ladies I am pretty upset that this woman would speak to a young child and then approach her to look at her clothing. And then, topped it off with a negative remark. Just not okay in my mind. I know my youngest would have really struggled and felt quite vulnerable in that situation.

BTW, does this woman live under a rock? Has she never seen the names of Junior's brands? It only gets worse as the girls get older, trust me. The labels are rife with every kind of double entendre out there!

I don't know why everyone is surprised - the Gladys Kravitzes of the world have been around since the beginning of time...

I don't think it was rude for her to ask to look, if she really liked the robe and was curious - I think it was rude not to ask you about the robe. And I bet if she were upset about the label with you standing there looking her in the eye, she wouldn't have had the guts to say anything.

How can people not know what a horny toad is? And as I recall, it was one of Yosemite Sam's favorite sayings, "Great horny toads!" whenever he was astonished by something.

Sometimes I admire something one of my friends have on and if they don't know where they got it, I will often look at their label. Now mind you this is adults only and with their consent.

I've often had teachers/other moms ask me about where a certain outfit of bebe's is from but as far as I know no one has ever looked at the label on her clothing on their own. I realize its simple curiosity YET it is best approached with the parent t avoid situations just like this. The woman has the nerve to then say/ imply something to your daughter and now your 10 yr old is curious. not about just a toad or a horny toad but why the woman took offense. And a discussion on 'horny' alone is not one a 10 year old needs. Sheeesh.

Wow. That is weird! In fact, I have to wonder if that woman didn't have one too many around the campfire. Who looks at a kid's label and then makes comments of that sort? LBD is right...the Gladys Kravitz's of the world, I guess.

I would have been MAD!! She should NOT have checked the label of an unattended child. Even then, she should have shut her mouth.

I don't know juniors or children's brands, but I am not surprised. Still, I would have been hopping mad she had approached my unescorted child. Even madder about the label thing.

And I thought having a toddler was hard >.<

I'm with some of the other ladies as I think it was completely inappropriate for her to be making that kind of physical contact with your daughter. I am guessing she meant nothing by it but common sense prevails.

Was your daughter just bemused by this woman's behaviour Isobel or was she a little upset? Without scaring DD I would maybe take the opportunity to reinforce the message of stranger danger and how you are proud of her for telling you about this grown ups odd behaviour.

It does sound as though the lady was just clueless in this case, both in terms of appropriate behaviour around a child and her knowledge of natural history.
