YLF Summer picture perfect challenge: Day 3

I love this photo - it's brilliant in so many ways. So, my take is very literal - the colors, the jeans, and my booties are a nod to the cowboy.

Pic #1 is how I interpreted this photo and wanted the outfit to look.
Pic #2 is probably how I'll end the day - it's still too hot here to wear jeans & a scarf out running errands.

My copy of a copy of a copy of a myth picks up on the blue sky, white clouds, white horse, sandy coloured ground.

My pocket shirt is secured with my leather "reins." My hair is lassoed in a (wait for it) PONYtail. My macrame bag serves as my lariat.

And my necklace recalls the swirling movement of the photo.

Worth a million bucks? It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Yellowgirl, the russet shirt is lovely on you! It works so well with denim and white, and I love your silver accessories.
Suz, I love your attention to detail, and FWIW, you DO look a million bucks in this summery, fresh outfit :).

I love the implied freedom in this photo, and that the cowboy is gallopping out of the picture rather than into it. In fact I am considering ordering a print of it!

Like you, Yellowgirl, I've literally gone with the cowboy theme; leather jacket, glass beads, jeans and cowboy boots. Here's a winter WIW from about 6 months ago with the outfit that initially came to mind, but I didn't want to recycle a previous post :).

Here's what I planned, though I may be too hot in it. This was difficult for me, too, as my work wardrobe is light on both white and blue. Tried to bring in the western element with the boots.

Wow - this is an unusual outfit for you, Bella? I love that you've given the cowboy a nod but kept it dressy with the pumps and silver watch. Cool.

These are fab! I love all you cowgirls with your boots and plaid and denim!!

I found this challenge particularly, uh, challenging when it came to putting together a work outfit. Fortunately, though, we are going out to the Hollywood Bowl this evening so I could put together an alternate version featuring denim!

1. In the work look I tried to capture the colors of the original. Although the top looks pink in the photo, it's really a coral-y orange that's very similar to the shirt in the photo. The cardi is the sky, the pearls are the clouds, the skirt is the ground, and the horse's mottled rump and black legs are my leopard pumps with black heels (repeat after me: "leopard is a neutral!"). Oh, and check out the fab weathered braided leather belt from Sunday's swap! The fringe on my scarf (which is tied to my bag) reminds me of the horse's flying tail.

2. This is my "full cowboy"look, still trying to incorporate the colors from the photo. Again, I was saved by the swap because I was able to bring in the orangey color via the scarf from the swap. It's too hot for boots so I chose black sandals.

Quickly putting up my photo, then will look at the other posts.

This is mainly about the colors, with a nod to Western flavor in the belt with the big antique brass buckle. You could also relate the lacy texture of the sweater to the clouds.

I like this outfit. The sweater isn't worn much - I shy away from white due to not wanting to get things dirty. And I haven't worn this top to work as it's just a cotton tank which I normally just wear with shorts at home. And this brown pencil skirt is normally only worn with one specific top. So thanks for the challenge that resulted in a new combo, which I'm enjoying wearing today!

Here is mine. I feel like I cheated just a little bit because this blouse + skirt combo has been worn several times this summer already, but it was too perfect for this photo not to use.

The white, black, and brown patterned skirt reflects the colors of the cowboy and horse, and the blouse blouse reflects the color of the sky. The ruffles with unfinished edges around the neckline of the blouse suggest the poofiness of clouds. I added earth toned RATE-ish accessories (fake amber bracelet, multi-strand beaded necklace). My Frye Carson shorties were an obvious choice, although to be honest my feet are a little hot in them right now.

Last photo is my attempt to suggest the movement in the photo.

As an aside, I have been wanting a leather cuff bracelet for a while now. It would be PERFECT with this outfit.

Suz, I'm always so envious of your beautiful garden! You and I are really on the same wavelength -- your outfit looks very much like the first combination I put on last night, but my white skirt didn't fit me nearly as nicely as yours fits you! I love the touch of the macrame bag!!

Lynne, if you ever wake up and find those boots missing, I will be the prime suspect! And isn't it funny how you had such a perfectly apt prior outfit in the file?

Bella, I don't remember seeing you in plaid, like, ever! It looks fab and such a fun and different look for yoU! Love the belt tuck!

"Non-cowgirl-O-office edition"

This is one gorgeous, rich photograph I loved working around. To me it instantly implied the masculine or androgynous outfit. But, it has one important aspect which intrigued me - the cowboy rides out of the frame. Everything I ever read about the photography composition said that the viewer’s eye needs to be lead into the frame, not out of it.

So, if this photograph is about what in theory should not work, but still does, I have decided to create the outfit that could not work for a cowboy(girl) in the desert, but still does - for me in the office. I swapped the masculine elements from the photograph for as feminine pieces as possible. The only reference to cowboy theme is the fabric of the skirt (denim). This is how:
- trousers became skirt
- men’s shirt became girly top
- boots became heeled shoes
- belt with big buckle (not seen, but I guess all cowboys wear them) became white patent belt

There are some literal references too
- fluffy clouds led me to choosing puffy sleeved top and pearls
- the horse appears to be spotty, which is why the top is spotty too;
- the sand gave me a clue for the nude shoes
- the dust around the horse’s legs led to chasing nude hose with swirly pattern, (previously worn in my Adele outfit)

Finally, with the skirt acting as neutral support player here, I wanted to add something else distinctively blue in my outfit because the sky is so beautiful and striking, so I went for the long necklace with striking turquoise pendant. It makes the whole ensemble look like there’s a lot going on, but that’s how the sky appears to me. I’ve compared photos with either two or one of each necklaces only, and found that the outfit I wanted to achieve can actually handle both of them together, so my necklaces are my sky and the clouds.

I thought I would use a painting I did a few years ago for my accessory, completing the look with a denim skirt, belt that reminds me of a lasso, bracelets that seem rugged and western with most of the colors in the photo, and finally my Sechelles flats, that have more leather accents.

Here's mine. I was so taken with the beautiful blue sky and white clouds that the only reference to the cowboy is my denim skinny jeans, although white for the clouds. The photo made me think of this billowy silk top which is working out well for a hot humid day.
Looking at the photo, the top looks too short. I'm wearing a long white cami under it.
