YLF Picture Perfect Challenge - Spring 2013 - "Movie Posters"

Today's inspiration poster is for the only silent movie in our final 5, "Metropolis".

Believed to be one of only four in existence, the last time it was auctioned, in December 2012, it fetched $1.2 million. This art deco-inspired movie poster was created by German artist Heinz Schulz-Neudamm for the Berlin premiere of Fritz Lang's seminal science-fiction production.

Today's poster was the most difficult challenge for me. I absolutely love the movie, the poster is fantastic, but it is not necessarily easy to translate the look into my wardrobe. I thought of modern, urban, grit, symmetry, minimalism as key concepts for my take on this. Oh well! I can do modern, but I'm bad at urban, gritty looks. I can do symmetry, but I always fail at real minimalism, I think. The colors are challenging, too, because they are dark, stern and monocromatic. I have very little browns in my wardrobe except in accessories, no mustards and no metallics.

Here's what I finally came up with: My color scheme is black and brown, with a dash of light added as it is Spring. A modern classic look (classic black trousers and cardigan, modern leather moto and booties). Because it is too cold yet for a scarf-less look outdoors, I added a graphic print in black, white and cream (it reads a bit more white in the picture than IRL).

I am pretty pleased with this, in fact. It is very wearable for today's activities, including a night out with a few girlfriends. This is not an outfit I'd have chosen this time of year, but thanks to this wonderful challenge, I did. Over to you! I can't wait to see what you all are up to today.

Oh, I do have some browns in my wardrobe to match the poster, but I never thought will be so hard to make an outfit work for the office and stay true to the movie's mood, age and message in the same time.

I worked sooo hard to keep the tone in tone, monochromatic line in a "soul sucking beigey-taupeish-browns" as featured on the poster-cuz it felt so depressing-- but the film itself is black and white, silent, bitter and stern, too- isn't it?

So, here it is:
-dark brown M&S cotton pencil skirt
-taupe(olive) ruffle neck tee
-chok brown wrickly linen jacket.
-brown wedges and sheer black hose
-brown trench
-golden brown lipstick.
(I usually wear these items with some whites or creams and some patterns but not all together at once:-), and I'm not kidding you, I'm sitting at my desk in this now, on a sunny spring day:-))

More than honning the colours in the poster, I also wanted to suggest all that resignation of the dehumanized crowds who fed all the hellish maschines underground the gleaming city of the Thinkers. So it's all very casual, cotton and wrickly, scrunched up linen, with wedges.
The only feminine feature in my outfit, the ruffles on my tee, reminds me of Maria and how she would have been dressed up in 1927 (when the film was released) if she would have been an upper class girl.

And, while dressing and thinking on all these, I was getting a brilliant ideea, on telling you that for me, life without my hearing aids, is almost really like a silent film...:-).Please be sure I didn't want to shock you -like the movie was meant to:-)! I already made peace with my condition, and trully have a wonderfull and active life with my HA (even if they cannot do so well like once my own ears). That's exactly the reason why my new, bright and cheerish, spring yellow bag worn to the outfit brings and simbolize the optimism in my life!:-))

So, have a nice day, Ladies, curious on what everybody else is comming up with. Not easy, I personally felt it a true challenge again, but in the end, while making it work, was giving me a great boost!:-)

PS. All of yesterday's outfits were a true treat!
Ingunn: I'm afraid my black loafers are not Clarks:-(, only a local brand, but almost that comfy:-)

I have not seen the film, but it has been put on the list "To See A.S.A.P."(together with 1927 others).

This poster screams Art Deco to me, and because my love for all things geometric and symmetric, with clear lines and black outlines, topped by B&W, is well documented on these pages I saw no need to reinvent the wheel, I just played around those very ideas to see what else I can come up with.

Outfit breakdown:

top of the poster = vertical stripes on the shirt + bracelet at the top half of my outfit
to reflect robot's goggly eyes and generally roundness at the bottom half of the poster = patterned hose (sort of chain pattern)
pose = robot
stare = empty look in robot's eyes
outerwear = nod to 1920s
sepia effect = that is the color I saw on the poster

ETA: Worn to meet our bank manager. Bonus feature: the stretchy skirt and flared coat meant this was very cycling-friendly look.

Ok, my peasant style shirt signals my allegiance with the workers.
My stiff pose and gold shirt are meant to suggest the robot.
(Also I wore all black yesterday and this is the only gold thing I own.)

Caro, you are wonderful! Love it.

Lyn, I love how you've put so much thought into this. Your outfit definitely carries optimism, the yellow bag is perfect for bringing light into the formula. The comparison of your life without hearing aid to the movie is a very good point and brings even more meaning to your interpretation. I'm glad to hear that you are at peace with your condition, and that you've received adequate aid. My MIL doesn't hear much anymore, but she refuses to get any help for it (I think she doesn't want to "get old"), and this stubborn behavior is preventing her from taking fully part in her social life. Enough about that - I loved reading your thoughts and your outfit is not at all depressing, on the contrary, it is fresh, with an apparent nod to the distress you mention in your analysis. I'm impressed!

Ornella, you are the queen of modernism today. I LOVE your poses, and I think your interpretation is spot on, with the graphic details as perfection of the theme. Love your coat, too!

Shevia, we double posted! Your pose is fantastic, and your outfit indicates that we will see a wide interpretation of the theme today as well, with many different takes on modernism, minimalism and social structures. I love it!

I had the colours for this and the checked pattern of the jumper reminds me of the towers of the high rises.

Just as you thing interpretations can't get any better...!

Ingunn :: minimum wardrobe, maximum impact. The scarf, for me, completes your outfit, it must be some gorgeous silk because it drapes beautifully.

Caro :: you did it again, stellar interpretation!

Lyn67 :: I hope your happiness factor is as huge as your dedication to creating this outfit was, because it should be. It's an unexpected detail to reflect the film's era by letting us know about your HA - you are both clever and brave to embrace things in such way. I totally get your yellow bag - I bought mine when I needed (artificial) Sun in my life and if my experience is anything to go by, then color therapy works.

Shevia :: High five - we both emulated the robot, through posing AND staring. Fantastic use of shirt style to send the message of social character.

Runcarla :: if one item of clothing has it all in it, your dress seem to be that one. Fantastic - minimal, clean, moody (not dull), with a lot of craracter.

Not nearly as sophisticated as the rest of you and not having as much fun as Ornella, but here is my contribution for today. Unlike Lyn I did not have to adjust this for work today (working from home and attending DS school play) so I went casual (and it's going to be mid 80's again so had to be cool)
I went with black (the Caslon pants are a black with taupe flowers and turquoise circles rather arts and craftsy almost), white (Calvin blouse) and gold (Gap sweater, Lucky flats). I'm enjoying seeing all the entries even more than being one.

I had a difficult time finding somehthing that felt "hard" enough for this inspiration posted and in the end went with a silk T...before I even read Angie's post today! I dont feel like I capture the angularity or harsh gritty tone of the poster and movie. I found no sequined headwear in my closet (wardrobe hole?) so this newsboy had to do.

I'm marveling at the outfits so far. These are each true to the movie or poster but unique. I had a hard time with this one and went with the mood much like Ingunn. I ended up with something I never wear...black leather top and bottom, but feel tough and ready to take on the cold damp day in this outfit.
I went with my Goodwill black leather pants, black leather moto from San and the star of my wardrobe, studded belt for urban grit, graphic tee of Seattle for the lines and mood, and grey Tsubo booties that seem sort of Art Deco and very modern at the same time. The browns of the poster didn't work with what I have so I substituted grey.
I added a picture of the jacket zipped up because of the minimalism but will wear it open.

I was inspired by the industrial feel and hard edges featured in the poster. I thought the Chanel-eque jacket was perfect because of the strong lines, subtle sparkle and sober tones. I added some heeled mary jane brogues and pinstripe trousers.

I was completely mystified by today's poster (and I haven't seen many of the movies at all - I think only Raiders). I was hoping last minute-inspiration would strike, but instead the stomach flu hit my youngest. So I think we'll sit today out and enjoy all your wonderful outfits! And I think I need to see this movie!

Lyn67 - very interesting post, and I really like your outfit. I was prepared for something really soul-sucking by your description, but those neutral shades are lovely on you. I'm glad your hearing aids help to transcend the slience, thank you for sharing your feelings on them.

Ornella - GREAT outfit and poses! You made me chuckle and I really like your patterned hose with booties.

Here's mine, and it was hard for me because I wanted to be more urban, more chic, more futuristic, but alas, my wardrobe is sadly lacking in those departments at this time. Definitely something to think about when I get a bigger shopping budget. So instead I channeled my inner 1920's vibe, the vibe of androgyny and anything goes, rules were made to be broken!

Joy, I have really been enjoying ALL of your outfits this week, but I think this one tops my happiness list! You really own that look, it feels so natural on you, and I love the tower on your shirt. BAM! You nailed it.

Suz, you look really good, sincere and beautiful. The jacket with lightly-scrunched sleeves is what makes the outfit for me, and echoes the lines of the poster while it also feels earthy and worker-ish.

This was the toughest one since I haven't seen the movie (I ordered it on Netflix but it hasn't arrived yet), but I did research on the movie online. It looks like a fascinating film and DH and I are planning to watch it together (he loves sci fi).

1-7. This first outfit was inspired by the buildings and diagonal lines on the movie poster and the city lights. The dress has diagonal ombre lines and so do the purse and shoes, and they are all in black/grey/taupe which fits with the color scheme and urban feel. I went with a Art Deco style bracelet to reflect the time period, and chain necklace (since the workers are symbolically chained down by their work).

8-11. Since it's a black and white film, I thought I'd have fun with my pics in black and white too. This sequin top reminds me of the rings surrounding the robot and the stiff tank is like the robot's hard shell.

12-17. I couldn't resist throwing in my flapper dress from the recent 20's party I attended. This reminds me of the heavily beaded and somewhat risque outfits that the socialites and dancer wore in the film, plus it's consistent with the time period, since the film came out in the 1920's. The beaded dress is sheer so I wore a slip underneath, but maybe if I was in the film I wouldn't!

This was the hardest one for me this week but I am pleased with how it turned out. I love Art Deco style but it's not very well-represented in my wardrobe. (I do own things with sharp, geometric patterns but they all also appear to be drapey.) Also, much of my urban stuff is steampunk urban, which is not really the same thing as modern urban at all.

I went with the black/grey/gold color scheme and tried to incorporate some of the sharp lines and urban touches. My mustard pants are the perfect dirty gold color from the poster. My top (which is actually a dress hiked up and layered over a tee) has the sharp, straight lines from the poster. I added my sharp, structured black blazer for some harder, urban edge. My boots have a patent shine as a nod to the sci-fi theme but their asphalt grey color is perfect for conveying the mood of the gritty, urban, dark city. Finally, my silver bag (which also made an appearance for Star Wars) has more sharp, straight lines and sci-fi sheen.

These are all amazing! The poster looks yellow to me, so I used the color for my inspiration, and was tickled that the ombre pattern on the blouse echos the dark-to-light top-to-bottom look of the poster! The shiny silver bag and the round pendant are my homages to the robot! More here.

A friend gave us this movie with a bunch of others that he no longer wanted, but I have yet to watch it. I'm intrigued that it is a silent movie. Must plan a movie night this weekend.

I didn't have a column of brown/beige/bronze, so I did a column of black then added my dusty colored knit moto over it. The bronze studs on the collar mimic the skyscrapers in the poster. I don't have a close up of my "industrial earrings," but it has bronze dangling bits with a small pearl. SE black petty booties and gold watch to finish the look.

I had a hard time coming up with my own outfit. Somehow there just wasn't anything I immediately thought of when I looked at the picture. I had to play around quite a bit to find this outfit and I would have never thought to wear my pieces in this combination, but I really like it!

This one was hard for me too. I have little brown or art deco in my wardrobe. I started with the pants because the vertical stripes remind me of the skyscrapers. The black and brown color scheme made me think steampunk so I added the lock and key earrings and brown studded leather. I tried two different shirts but wasnt really happy with either.
