YLF made me do it!

Just musing on what I wear now that I would not have worn were it not for the inspiration on YLF over the past year.
Here is a list:
white jeans
white denim in general
button up shirts
oxford shoes
lipstick (such a gloss addict there for a while)
slouchy skinnies

ANd things I would have worn that I probably shouldn't have:
Maximally matched earrings and necklaces
Too much jewelry in general
Unnecessary panty hose

How about you? What have you learned from YLF?

I've learned that there few solid answers.

As soon as someone says they hate ruffles, someone else says oh, I love ruffles. Some like slouchy pants, some like skinny jeans. Some say bootcut is dated, some say its classic. You say not too much jewelry, I say is there such a thing?

I've learned Ceit looks fantastic in her RATE and Lyn looks adorable in her girlish polish. I've learned that Suz can do no wrong, but I couldn't copy her tailored style in my life.

I sometimes wish I could get a list of solid rules, but I guess it is better to have all this variety. It would be pretty weird if we all dressed the same.

I've learned that there really are so many styles and they have to fit the wearer. I love the use of the word "poison eye" used here when we can say something but it lets others know we have a predjudice so to take it with a grain of salt.

I've learned that I am not a minimalist and while I repsect and even admire how tthat works for others, never want to be that for myself.

I learned that proportion is everything for my petite height.

I've learned that adding heels can drastically change proportion

I've learned that while I knew I liked classics that I also have a boho side.

I've learned to read Angie's post on trends ( and love everything she writes as it is so well done!) and open my mind to new possibilities, but that I can pick and choose which really "sing" to me.

I have found some of my favorite pieces through YLF. Years ago I bought some Leo & Sage cotton wrap tops because they were recommended here and I simply adore them - they are so flattering, high quality and staples of my closet. And recently I bought some Lucky Brand wedges that I love - which I never would have, I have such an antipathy to wedges! - simply because I saw how fantastic they looked on Janet. =)

YLF is not quite my style (a little too grown-up and expensive, is all) but it is thought-provoking, well-written, and always has new suggestions & ideas for me to consider. I am almost converted to harem pants... almost. =D

I have worn;

White jeans
Oxfords, flat and heeled
Cons... coloured ones too!
Straight leg jeans.
Nude hose

Also these are but a few:
I have learned to really appreciate different styles that I wouldn't wear or wouldn't suit me.
I have learned of ways to interpret trends.

PPP
I have learned what fantastic and neverending source of fashion knowledge Angie is
And most of all I have learned that YLF is a wonderful place to 'meet' some truly lovely people.

I have worn because of YLF:
Bf jeans
White boot cut
golden top
converse
semi-tuck
I would have worn before YLF:
ill-fitting clothes
no PPL
matching necklace and earrings (just like you, Nicole)
short-sleeved blazers
In short, I used to dress like everybody else around me and used to feel awful about my wardrobe. But I just didn't know how or where to start making changes. YLF showed me the way and gave me the courage to do it.

Really loving the responses here! It's so true that what we learn here goes far beyond the individual items we wear and don't wear.

Items I've tried as a direct result of YLF:

White jeans (like you!)
Cons (the wedge heel ones sold me)
Animal print booties and shoes
Animal print belts (print belts and shoes, period, really)
Clutch bags
Bright bags
Full price in -season shopping, period
VARIETY in footwear and bags.

Things I would have worn, pre-YLF:

Whatever I could find from a discount store that seemed to fit and was a reasonably good colour for me, whether it worked with the other items in my wardrobe or not.
Thrift items worn without confidence -- not knowing if they worked or not.
A feeling of pervasive fashion confusion. Not to mention irritation with myself for not having a personal style.

Things I would not have worn, pre-YLF, in a different way:

Lots of stuff hanging in my closet -- bought for a fantasy life!

Angie and YLF have taught me so much!

Shopping with girlfriends can be fun, not a chore!
Item/ capsule/ outfit test.
Dress for real life and real weather!!

Such a good post and so many good observations.
I could list "things" like white jeans and track pants but the phase I'm liking right now is finally focusing more on basic principles from Angie and reinforced by others. So, starting out first with a lot of trying, or updating, or trends , like waking up from being in a rut, but then making more progress in how to interpret, how to
adapt for me, and using PPP to relax and increase the satisfaction/ happiness factor. That's where I think
I'm going to have the most fun in the
coming year.

I have more than one belt!

I have learned about PPL and PPP. I have also learned that it is ok to wear what you love, and not what you think you "should" be wearing.

Thanks everyone for the great responses - especially Julie - I love Flip Wilson! He looked so fab in drag. Nice to see I'm not the only one who would have shunned white jeans - and they are so great, it would have been a shame. Unfrumped, I like your approach, enjoying the process and the satisfaction that comes from a thoughtful style refresh.

Still sorting things out, at about 6 months exposure, and only shopped 1 season (summer) with YLF inspiration.

Biggest impact has been figuring out a style persona, and staying true to myself.

The importance of really, really good under garments.

Wearing white, not just clothes, but accessories ( shoes, belt, bag).

Honestly, almost all the staples in my wardrobe are things I'd never have worn pre-YLF:

pencil skirts
pussy bow blouses
skinny jeans
boyfriend jeans
colored jeans
white jeans
white shoes
belts
scarves
handbags coordinated with my outfits
microfishnets
cardigans

Things I would have worn pre-YLF:

anything that was on sale and fit reasonably well
frumpy skirt suits
pantyhose every day
pants too short
skirts too long

Gosh, I have learned so many things but something I notice that goes beyond my own choices in dressing is the possession of a language to talk about style.
