yay or nay: sweater/poncho hybrid

So this is a knitting pattern I came across when searching for patterns for things like the Gap dolman cable sweater. I can't decide whether it would be really comfy, warm, and fashionably oversized, or whether it would just be weird looking and uncomfortable. The sleeves are attached to the body near the cuff, so does that mean that one would not be able to move one's arms freely in this style of sweater, especially since it's not cropped?

I've never worn anything with sleeves like this so I don't know if they'd be a pain, but I like the look a lot, so voted yay.

I think it could be fun, not weird looking, but like you am a little worried about the freedom of movement factor, that could get annoying quickly for me...

I like it in theory, but am afraid that it would be maddening to wear because: a) you couldn't raise your arms freely without exposing your stomach, b) you couldn't raise your arms, period, and c) you couldn't layer over it. All three of those possibilities make me shudder, but perhaps those are just my own quirks that would not bother anybody else.

It looks cute but I would hate not being able to move my arms freely without exposing my belly as DJ said. Plus how would you carry your purse?

I love ponchos -in theory- and wanted to knit one. I found a hand knit one at the thrift store and wore it once. The problem wasn't the look, but rather that it wasn't warm enough when it was cold. It just never worked for me. I love the hippie look though. The other problem and it might be worse with this garment is how to carry your purse.

Also, this reminds me of gloves with fingers that are too short.

Natalie, I hadn't even considered the purse issue! You're right, that would be MAJORLY inconvenient, especially since most of my purses are shoulder bags.

DJ, those are all things I was worried about too, so it's not just you! I'm pretty sure this would only work as a loungewear item, because of the limited arm motion, the purse problem, and inability to put a coat over it.

Not sure I could take not being able to move my arms without exposing my tummy, as other posters have mentioned.

While really cute, I think it would be horribly impractical.

As Goldenpig said, how would you caryr purse? Could you even wear a coat with it?

And, I want to be able to move my arms, darn it!

hmmmmmmmmm, thinking you would have to wear a tank or cami under it. (for arm lifting)

I think you are definitely meant to wear this type sweater as a topper over an under layer shirt or blouse.

check this out along with the thumbnails http://souchi.com/collections/.....l-madame-b -- This is on my pinterest board (Mmmm, cashmere). I am thinking the one Diana is looking at might move and give in a similar way even though the sleeves are a bit different, both are just a type of batwing top.

How good of a knitter are you? This looks like a difficult project. It would look good if you are prepared to wear same-colour sweater underneath. The cape is just a topper, not meant to cover anything. As soon as you move your arms it will ride up, like a cape.
I love the frontal design.

I love the look of this. But I recently tried on something a little similar that I decided to pass on because I felt it was really impractical to wear.

Ditto what the others have said, Diana. I think you could knit a gorgeous version and you would look amazing in it. But it does seem quite difficult to wear. I wonder if you could find people who own one and ask them how they deal with these issues?

I do like the look, but I also wondered about a purse and layering a coat over.

I really like the looks of this, but if you are doubting, it seems like so much effort for something you are not sure you will like wearing. I admire anyone that can knit! I have had to settle for crochet, because I can not get the hang of knitting. My hat is off to you, my dear!

I think this is a cute sweater and believe it would work extremely well as a batwing, but I agree that the sleeve/hem may expose your belly if you raise your hand. (not a good look

Same issues here with coat and purse. I like the idea though. Can you make it a heavier knit and use as outerwear for mild climes? Then it does not matter if it rides up once you move your hands, you will have stuff underneath

Thanks for your opinions, everyone. I won't be knitting this - I'm pretty sure the practical issues (especially the purse one, as I can't do purses that have to be carried in the hand) will drive me nuts.

I might try one on if I ever come across a similar style in a store though.
