yay or nay: peplum tankinis - YouLookFab Forum

So I've been sort of (read: not very diligently) searching for new swimwear lately. I at least need a new bikini bottom since the current one is too small (the top still fits fine). Anyway, in my browsing I've come across several peplum tankini styles. This is kind of intriguing to me because I don't normally fit tankinis very well (my short waist and high hip shelf usually means they roll up unflatteringly around the waist). Now the peplum would eliminate the rolling problem. But, would they be impractical? I can imagine they would billow out in a weird, potentially unflattering way in the water and also be impractical for actual swimming (especially the blousy one). Also, is this a style that will date quickly? I don't buy or wear swimwear very often so I'd want it to last several seasons.

Has anyone actually tried or worn a peplum tankini?

I've never tried one, but I have to confess they don't particularly appeal to me. I feel they would emphasize my short waist and wider bottom half. I prefer to wear styles that skim my body to create a longer, leaner line. I do share your concern about them floating/billowing around in the water -- they seem a bit impractical to me. JMHO.

I haven't seen these, but I think they're cute! My experience with Tankini's is that anything that is not stuck to your tummy will billow up in the water and you will be left looking like you're wearing a bikini under the water. If you mind that, these probably won't work for anything but sunbathing.

I think #2 is cool, although it would look hideous on me. On the right person it could be pretty, though. I don't care for the other ones. To me #3 and 4 risk looking frumpy/ maternity style.

I tried on something similar this past weekend. On me, it really emphasized my hips, which was not what I was looking for.

I did buy a tankini, and they have come a long way in both comfort and wearability, in my opinion. If you haven't tried one lately, you might want to.

I tried on some tankinis, but I thought they made me look more square than I wanted to. I went with a bikini.

I like #2 and #4 although my experience with tankinis is that they billow out underwater. I think it's annoying and prefer a bikini (even now at 6 mo pregnant I've been wearing a bikini. My philosophy is that if you don't want to look at my pregnant belly just look away). #2 looks like it might fit tight enough except at the very bottom that it might stay put better than some.

I have never been a fan of tankinis, but have you seen the one piece suits that give the illusion of a tankini? There are peplum styles made that way; I have seen them. Those might be more practical in the sense that they cannot expose anything (because it is still a one piece), and the "pieces" stay in place because, well, it's still a one piece! I will look to see if I can find them.

But I love the peplum swimwear look!

These are so cute, I'd be tempted to try them. I'm not a serious swimmer, though, but I like the modest but cute look of these.

I don't know if these are doable from a practical standpoint. The peplum is very cute and is consistent with your style, but all that fabric is going to be a mess when it's wet. It will either droop, hang funny, or both. So, I'd say these are "sunbathing only" suits.

Sounds like these will not be practical... I agree they are probably best for sunbathing only. I do think the first two are really cute, but the fuss factor in the water would probably drive me nuts. I'm not a sunbather anyway. I want to be in the water when I'm at the beach. I think I'll just stick to my bikinis! (just to be clear, I have no modesty issues with bikinis, and they fit my body best anyhow.)

Echo, the one piece idea is interesting and probably more practical. For me, though, it most likely won't work because one-pieces never work for me. I am a different size on the top and bottom, and so short waisted that they're always cut all wrong.

I don't know either, but those are cute! How much swimming are you going to do? If you're working out, I'd get the standard athlete's one piece. If not, then I think any of these you would get along in.

I have sworn off tankinis. I do not like how the fabric behaves in the water. I vote get a new one piece suit instead!

I think the second one is awfully cute but like the others I suspect its functionality would be limited to sauntering around poolside looking fab. Come to think of it, that could be fun!

They are pretty and fun, but for actual swimming I don't think they would be the greatest. Alas.

Ha. You notice they do not show any side views. That's where the peplum hits the road. These are SO wrong.

Very cute suits but I think more for walking on the beach and enjoying cold bevies poolside. I do not think they would work in the water.

I like #2 and it looks like it might work in the water. The others are definitely just for sunning.
