Well, I have no real idea either. My instinct would be to do some variation on a "ladies who lunch" ensemble. I would guess that color is fine, and in fact would be welcome. If you enjoyed your former stepmom, maybe try to imagine what she would enjoy seeing you wear.

Bear in mind that I know absolutely nothing about Southern customs, beyond what I learned on Designing Women, LOL. You always look fabulous, so you'll be fine. And I'm sorry you've lost someone who once was important in your life.

Thanks, CC. I think "ladies who lunch" (at the club) is the right level of dress. Pat was not a formal person by any stretch of the imagination, so the club is somewhat of an odd choice.

Caro, I should have mentioned that I have only seen one of my former step-sisters once in 30 years. The other I haven't seen since she was 15. It feels a bit awkward to ask them what they're wearing.

I would probably go with pants, a patterned top and a nice jacket in anything but black. Pattern to liven it up but the jacket to still be respectful and occasion appropriate. I can't imagine you not being dressed appropriately for any occasion Carter.

If the invitation has any hint as to dress code, by all means follow that...If there is no dress specified, then I would dress up...gray, maybe black with white touches, etc...You always look wonderful and I am sure this will be no exception but I would not wear color unless it was specified and I would dress up...Be sure to bring enough kleenex and your sunnies for possible tears...I would dress the opposite foot to match the boot cast...I know you will look chic ...

Good suggestions, dianthus. I should confess that because I have been sitting on my butt for the past 6 weeks because of this foot, I will definitely be looking for some "coverage" in the form of a jacket or tunic.

Thanks, crutcher. The "invitation" was a text message that said, "hey carter. It's X. I don't know if you heard, but Mom died. There will be a celebration of life at the Club on Tuesday from 3-5." Fortunately, her cousin had called me the night before, so this wasn't the first I had heard of her death. What do you mean when you say to dress the left foot to match the boot cast? In color? I don't have any light grey shoes.

Your former stepmom won't care. I would wear whatever made me feel the most fabulous. You always look great. Wear something sleek and fashionable and you will honor her memory by looking and feeling marvelous and ready to tell about the positive impact she made on your life.

I think something with a blazer might be a good choice. Either a sheath dress or a top and dress pants? Do you have a reasonably dressy shoe that matches the elevation of the aircast? I'd start from there and match the color scheme. I'd think that the guidelines for a funeral would apply, even though you probably don't need to be quite so somber. Classic and nothing flashy.

Sorry...I was so into what I thought you should wear that I wasn't clear...By matching the boot, I meant in height..not color...Your need for the cast is so self explanatory that you can only be, "Bless her heart...she has a bad foot..."

Carter, you always look perfectly appropriate, so I am sure you will have this nailed. I would do as Dianthus says -- some kind of pants (probably) -- maybe wide legs to go over the boot? But that might make a tunic top harder to wear. So I am not sure. A jacket never goes amiss. Or one of your amazing coats?

Here's what I was thinking this morning, adding appropriate jewelry and some spanx to hide the slug I've been lately. The top is a deep eggplant silk tunic. I have a vague memory of purple being her favorite color. I have the same top in a light grey/silver if you think that might be better. These pants are ponte, but I think I'll have to go with a slim satin pair because they don't play nicely with the way I walk in the cast. By the time I got to the event, I'd be wearing the right pant leg backwards! Goes a long way in explaining why my chiropractor is in such a good mood these days!

So...when I get to satin pants and a silk tunic, will it scream "holiday party"?

Suz, you're so sweet. My first thought was wide leg pants as well, but I could not get them to do anything reasonable in the front because the cast is basically a platform flat shoe. They just puddled there.

I think that outfit should be totally fine. Will you be warm enough? And in a weird way having slim pants that show the cast kinda give you an 'out' as far as dressing goes.

Gorgeous. The silver sounds lovely too. I don't think you need to worry about being in holiday party territory, although this lovely combo would take you there too.

Gee. That's a tricky one. What was the deceased like? Would she have appreciated colourful clothes? Maybe ask your step-sister what she will be wearing.

I think your choice is fine. For our local Ladies Who Lunch type country club, the ladies would add a bunch of chain necklaces and or a big scarf. These types of things also skew to the Elderly Matron set who still look immpecable in Chanel suits bought in the 1960s and they can still wear.
