I think the "sale brain" aspect is spot on! Don't we work ourselves into a frenzy of delight as we search through sale racks for the perfect bargain? Of course, with a steep discount we can talk ourselves into buying just about ANYTHING. I always recommend using, and sticking to, a shopping list. That way, you know where your wardrobe holes are, and you can focus your search. Be as specific as you can in terms of design, fabric, and color, and that way, you won't compromise. At least that should help us most of the time!
