Wrap coats - input solicited

I've been thinking about my jackets and coats.

I think I have room in my coat capsule for a light/mid weight coat.

Sometimes I wear leggings or skinny jeans with a tunic top and I seem to be missing something to put over the top, I think mostly bc of the length difference between my jackets and the tunics. The only midweight jackets I have that length are trenches and they don't feel right (unless it's raining).

So enter the idea of a wrap coat. I'm toying with this idea bc I like the big collar. I'm not so sure about the wrap, if it's too fussy or not.

I am fine with light to mid weight. I don't need a ton of warmth.

I am L/XL pear/hourglass shape.

Two options are below (finds not working right now).

Option 1: NYDJ glen plaid wrap coat
Option 2: T Tahari wrap coat - bigger collar, cool or no?

Thoughts? Experiences? Is the big collar too out there? Or is it what I need to amp up my style?

I like the big collar, but if the only thing holding it together is the tied waist belt, I would never be able to handle it - too much shifting and fuss. And it probably looks best that way, rather than open. Have you tried on this style?

AG, I haven't tried it on. I'm debating ordering one for my upcoming trip, but wanted feedback (like yours) beforehand.

I have a hunch the style may be too fussy for me, but I do love the idea of the big collar.

Have you seen any other coats or jackets with big collars that aren't wrap style? Maybe that's the issue.

And yes I do have two toddlers so I can't be messing around with anything fussy.

I think this kind of coat might be good in theory. But like Una I couldn't deal with the tie and non closure. It's like my bathrobe, which I am reclosing, and fussing with, continuously.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that type of collar. It might be too big for me. I don't like nonfunctional extraneous things.

Here's a big collar coat without a tie. I'm not pushing this coat, I just remembered seeing it earlier.

Yeah JAileen, I think that is my hesitation, too, the non closure except for the tie at the waist

such a bummer bc I really love the look of both coats.

I like the one you linked to, but the pattern is a bit higher contrast than what I was looking for. And for some reason I am drawn to the REALLY big dramatic collars.

I think you can probably pull off the big collar. (On me it would be overwhelming). However, I have never been into wrap coats because I can't for the life of me keep them closed, and then they just look like messily-tied bathrobes. I would guess you'd have to tie it pretty tightly and probably at your natural waist, which is then not comfortable (at least to me).

That is so luxe looking AG. Love it (for you). For me, it's too warm (the collar) and I need something longer for wearing over tunics. If you try it post pics! And wow what a good price!

I have that Tahari coat in a black textured fabric from a few years ago. I love it and the drama of the big collar is unique and always receives compliments. I found the belt alone didn't hold it closed for me so I wasn't really wearing it much. I picked up some large snaps and sewed in two. Worked like a charm and I started to wear it more.

As far as the collar, most of the time I wear it a bit bunched in the back so it doesn't spread so wide and I can easily add a scarf for additional warmth. My favorite tops to wear it with are high crew neck and turtleneck sweaters.

I am looking at these similar style jackets this year. I am seriously in love with the DVF. I tried it on in the store and it is to die for.

I love a big collar and I love a big wrap coat. I have a great plaid bi-collared coat that is a loose fit and buttons up the front. I'm wearing it today actually so I'll take a pic of it later:) I also have a shawl collared wrap style , which I like, but will admit I almost always wear it untied. The belt , when tied, never sits at the right place for long especially if I'm in and out of the car, and unless you are teeny tiny in the waist, only makes one look like a stuffed animal (at least that;s how I feel - lol). Unwrapped and tied, it's great as it flows and moves with me, but then I'm often losing the belt too - one thing after another I vote for the shorter than knee length versions as they are less likely to be tangled up in your legs while walking.

lisap - thanks for your candid input. This is what I need to hear. I don't wanna look like a stuffed animal, that's for sure. But I am craving something extra, something a bit different than the average, usual coat. (I know you crave those things, too, so I'm glad you chimed in).

What do you think of this option (link above / pic below).

The Nic and Zoe one above is similar to the DVF you posted, Colette.

The last two (N+Z and this Cole Haan one) have some sort of closure beyond just a wrap.

I like the idea of the wrap coat but I can see how the non closure could be a problem. I like Colette's solution of adding a snap to keep it closed. It seems like that might solve the main problem with the coat.

I love the look, but invariably I find them not up to task and, yes, fussy. Always struggle with the belt slipping right off the coat.

I have 2 wrap coats. I really like the style. I do wear them to the office and home again in winter or going out for the evening. I find regular jackets or coats more useful for running around doing errands on weekends, dog walking etc. A wrap coat feels too dressy for that stuff and I agree that you need to wear it closed. I have not had any problems with slippage. Btw I like the shawl collar - it's dramatic.

HA Smittie re the structure / drape.

What about the last ones I posted? They have closures and more structure, but the dramatic collar on one and some nice color blocking on another. Curious for your feedback.

I can't see the lord and taylor one.
I see the bloomingdales one and I like that collar for sloped shoulders (I have sloped shoulders too.) -- but obviously, you are a better gauge of what looks good on you.
For some reason, I would prefer a solid colour for a coat.

The Lord and Taylor one has a very exaggerated, big collar. An asymettrical zip and a wrap tie around the waist. Sounds like a lot going on but it comes across (to me at least) as pretty polished.

I really like the Nic and Zoe one. I think I am drawn to the color blocking on it, and the fact that it has an elastic belt. I like the textured effect, too. I envision being able to wear it with a variety of colors, jeans, cognac shoes and accessories, black booties, etc.

I couldn't get the link to open for The Lord and Taylor coat, but I love the first two you picture here. I love the drama of the collar and if you can pull it off without overwhelming you, Big thumbs up. I'm broad shouldered and always feel like this style makes me look even bigger, but sometimes I just don't care!

Well, I decided if I am going to consider the original two (the NYDJ or T Tahari) I would want some additional closure, meaning adding snaps or buttons, so perhaps extra effort (which I am usually averse to).

So in entered the other two options -
Nic and Zoe (pic 1 below) - which I admit I am now enamored with. Hard to see details unless you bring up full view. It's charcoal, camel and black, has a belt, hi/low hem, and reads less coat-like, which is ok with me. This would be for my everyday life (MOTG/WFH).

and

Cole Haan big collar one (pic 2 below) - I like a lot, too, it reminds me of a Trina Turk that got away last NAS.

I like both of these latest choices, abc--the Nic and Zoe and the Cole Haan. And look! the Cole Haan comes in a textured navy wool with a leather belt, if you wanted another option.
If you are drawn to dramatic collars, I'd go with the Cole Haan. If you get the Nic and Zoe, you might still be lusting after dramatic collars. Both coats have very flattering lines, though--the Nic and Zoe perhaps moreso, because of that pattern play at the side waist.

I think Sharan's suggestion just above is a good one: a big collar but can be done up. I have a coat that buttons, has the big collar, and a wrap-style belt. It gives the effect of the wrap coat but is entirely more functional.

Yes, Aida, I am now realizing there's no way I could get by with just a waist tie. Someone earlier in the thread likened these coats to wearing a bath robe - and I HATE my bath robe for that reason! What was I thinking?

But one with some sort of closure, a big collar and maybe a belt/tie would be purrrrrrrrrfect

I think they could both work, they are quite different stylistically though. The first has an arty/boho flair and the second is more tailored/urban. Which jives more with your new style direction?
