Sorry in advance for the long post, but I am having issues making this decision on my own xD

I have been in love with this sweater blazer (swazer?) for awhile now. I like that it has the structure of a jacket but it seems like it would be comfy like a sweater. The heathered gray color I think would fit well with my ultra-casual lifestyle and I can think of a ton of ways to wear it. Only, it's much more than I spend on an item of clothing usually. I have gift cards and there is a promotion so it would really cost me $20, or I could spend that money on a few other items.

I guess what I'm wondering is you think it's worth investing in and if you think it would look dated in a few years. What criteria should an investment piece meet?

I think your instincts are good with what makes an investment piece - versatile wardrobe item, classic cut, flattering color, fits in your lifestyle, etc. I pause though because of the fabric composition - 44% Acrylic, 17% Silk, 39% Wool. Acrylic is not durable and is VERY prone to pilling. Even if everything about an item is classic and investment worthy, if the fabric isn't made to withstand the years, it is no investment.

I am with DL, I try to avoid acrylic at all costs. It looks amazing at first but never lasts more than one season. Maybe for $20 you can have some fun with it for a year but don't expect it to be an investment piece. Another blogger said it fit great but was kinda itchy.

Swacket! I think that I saw that when I was at BR yesterday. It is a lovely color and has a great feel. I am not a double-breasted person otherwise I would have tried it on. I agree with the others about the acrylic, but since it's less than 50% it might be OK. If you have a casual lifestyle a sweater-jacket sounds like just the ticket to kick your outfits up a notch. Honestly if you can get it for $20 I would go for it, but that's just me.

Thank you all very much for your input. I didn't realize acrylic was the culprit behind the pilling my cheapo sweaters! I think I will wait and see if I can grab it cheaper, if not I'll save my cards for something else

I tried that slacket on- it wasn't as flattering as it seemed like it would be. It felt nice, but if it has acrylic, forget it!

I tried on something similar at NAS and it was a lot less flattering than I expected. I would need to see it on fabulous you to judge it properly.

It looks great on the model, but I find with BR's current lines (ever since their head guy moved over to J Crew) that I have to touch it and try it before purchasing. A sweater-jacket especially has t be tried on, because they are super hit and miss.

However, again... that model looks great! I can see why this is an object of desire.

This one looks a little long...but if you plan to wear it with pants that is fine. Your description made me think of this jacket from NAS, which is now on sale and slightly cheaper (although probably no coupons for Nordies...unless you've got a Nord Note squirreled away?). It also has acrylic in it...not sure how much....just throwing it out there as another similar jacket to consider.

I do not think this type of thing would go out of date quickly. Can you try it on before you buy it? If not, you can always return it, right?

I bought the NAS version in grey petite so it's more cropped than the one you are considering. It's been way too hot to wear it but it feels like a nice quality. I also thought it would be a great piece to have for a casual wardrobe yet has more structure than a cardi.

I do like that Nordies one also, but I happen to have a few gift cards for old navy/gap/banana republic that are burning a hole in pocket It's early in the season yet, so I will be keeping my eyes peeled! Thanks for all your help
