UPDATE: DONE! Would it be wrong to test-drive the B coat?

UPDATE: Well now the sun is out and it's mellting the snow. It's 37 degrees according to our deck thermometer. A walk around the 'hood wearing just jeans and a cotton sweatshirt underneath the Burberry at full length was perfectly cozy. In fact, I got a bit hot and had to unbutton it. It's close fitting and pretty dense. So my guess is it should be okay down to mid-20s with proper underlayers. There's no wind today, though.

I was planning to ship the coat down to Rae (to have more room in my luggage) and try it on for everyone in CA - that way I can either return it or wear it home.

However, today's snow provides the perfect chance to test-drive the warmth factor.. Would it be totally wrong to wear it for a walk around the hood without cutting the tags, to see if it is indeed warm enough (it's 38 degrees out right now)?

Please be honest. On the one hand, this is an EXPENSIVE coat and I need to make sure it's practical. On the other hand, I don't want to do anything morally questionable.

Yey, take it for a spin. What can possibly happen to it? To me, that's the same thing as buying something from a store. I mean, can you say an item is "new", when it has been tried, often worn around the house, by many people?
That's why I only buy online, when is something verra expensive;)

Nothing at all wrong with a test drive. It's not as if you're returning a cocktail dress after wearing it to some function.

I'll admit that I did it with my last coat purchase, a pleather coat, to see if it overheated me in the "real world" of grocery shopping and driving in the car. It did and I returned it. The sales associate said trying it out was fine because I was not sure if it would work for me. (I told her this before I bought it and this is what she said to do.)

Absolutely wear it outside for a little bit - so long as the snow is done falling of course

Wear it outside for a walk around the block. Best way to see if it works. It is not like you are wearing it for a function and ten returning it, like lynne said.

You live in a very cold environment, and if the jacket can't keep you warm, it will get no wear. No one looks good shivering!

I would wear it around the block. When I buy shoes, I wear them around the house for several days to determine comfort level. Same thing right?

Go for it! I wear blazers and coats out on my balcony for a similar reason. The cold isn't going to be putting any "wear" on the coat, and the time it takes to walk around the block is similar to how long I might wear something around the store while considering.
