Would a Size 10 at J. Crew Equal a Size 8 at AT?

There's a great velvet jacket on sale at J. Crew. I've only tried on a few of their jackets and find that they usually are a bit tight at the shoulders. I'm always a size 8 at Ann Taylor (not tight at all) so I was thinking maybe a size 10 at J. Crew would work for me? The jacket is no return, so I don't know if I should risk it. (Only the navy color is left in Size 10.) Thanks!

It's really hard to say, Tarzy. I don't own anything from AT, but I will tell you that when I was losing weight, I'd fit into a smaller size JCrew jacket before anywhere else. I wear their jackets in a 6 now, but am still in an 8 most places.
I actually have this very jacket in honey glaze. It's very soft!

I'm so torn. I love the shape of the jacket, and it looks like it should be worn fitted, but I'm just not sure if the 8 would be too tight at the shoulders. I don't think I should risk it since it's not returnable (and there are shipping charges.) I need to go into J. Crew and try some things on to get a better idea of how their jackets fit me.

Maybe you could go to JCrew within the next few days and try some jackets on. That would give you an idea of how this one would fit. I wear thes ame size in all the jackets from there. I bet one of the suiting jackets would be a good test.

Tarzy I just got the navy one (the grey was all sold out once my return snafus were finished) and I purchased the 4 which fits perfectly. I usually take a 4 in jackets at AT too, so I'm not sure about sizing up. It is very fitted though so if you want a bit more room you could consider that. I agree with Sarah's suggestion of trying a different jacket on at a store, that's what I did to figure out what size to get. Good Luck!

Julijuli - thanks! Do you like the navy? The grey is very pretty, and I love the burgundy - but all the colors except for navy are sold out in the larger sizes!

Hi Tara! That is a great jacket. I wear a size 8 at AT and almost always wear an 8 at JC. When I tried on that velvet jacket, I took an 8. If my shoulders weren't so broad, I'd probably take a 6 like Sarah does. It is fitted in the shoulders, but not too tight. My bust is 36 and my shoulders are 19" across the back, if that helps you judge at all.

I work at AT part time and I can tell you they are generouse in thier sizing. I own the Velvet jcrew jacket and I agree with you they are a little tight in the shoulders compared to AT. I would say size up if you are unsure.

Ana - thanks! That is so interesting. I'm very confused about these sizes.

I always take an 8 at AT - but my bust is about 38 1/2. (I'm not sure how to measure my shoulders, but I have always assumed I had broad shoulders because of the way things fit. But maybe that's just because of my bust?) A 10 is definitely too big (in most other brands, too.) Yet according to the size charts at AT, their size 8 has a bust of 36. Yet it fits me. I can button up all my AT blazers and they do not look tight at all.

However - my fitted jacket from Ralph Lauren is an M (which is a 8/10) and that one is definitely fitted and snug. I can button it - but it's definitely snug. According to their size charts online, an 8 is a 36 1/2, and a 10 is a 38.

I called J. Crew and the woman said for this jacket, the size 8 has a bust of 38, and the size 10 a bust of 39.

So now I really don't know how to judge if it will fit or not. I think I'd better pass on this one since it's not returnable. In the past I've felt that J. Crew fit me a bit tight. But I really like a lot of their jackets. I need to find some time to go into the store and try some jackets on.

Tarzy, can you call them back, and ask them to do this:

Take the 8 and the 10, lay it flat, and measure from:

1) shoulder seam to shoulder seam

2) across the widest part of the arm

Then measure this to a jacket you already own?

I find specific garment measurements laid flat like this are invaluable. You'll see them listed by the smarter ebay sellers. I have in the past had customer service actually go and measure the garment for me to give me this information. Not every CS rep will bother to do it... but you never know. You can also try calling the store too. (They may be more likely to go to the bother, especially if you catch them during a slow time).

They have the burgandy in my size, and that is such a great price... I am tempted... but there's something strange about burgandy and velvet to me... I'm not sure what it is!!! Flashbacks to xmas holiday wear as a kid??? I don't know! I tend to think of velvet and black as going hand-in-hand. But maybe I should think outside the box. I wouldn't mind another black velvet jacket that doesn't have ruffles like the one I already have. Hmmm.

Shiny - I know what you mean about velvet. I have a black velvet blazer that I love, and also a red velvet blazer that I always think is "too fancy." The other day I wore the red velvet with jeans and a giraffe scarf and I loved it! The brown in the scarf was perfect with the red, and it did not seem holiday or fancy at all. I think the jeans also help to bring the velvet down to casual. I'm very attracted to the shape of this blue velvet blazer, but I probably don't need another velvet, especially for my climate.

I'm looking for some jackets that aren't quite as business-looking as my Ann Taylor jackets, yet are still sharp. I really like some of the J. Crew jackets, so I'll wait and figure out the sizing.

(Good suggestion about the measuring. I'll try that next time!)

Wow, those jackets have really dropped in price--I was looking at them a few weeks ago and they were still over $100. Now I'm thinking of getting either the navy or papaya.

I'm wondering the same thing as you about sizing (broad shoulders here too)! I'm going to measure my shoulders and compare to Ana's measurements.

I think the customer service reps would give you the measurements that you've requested Shiny, they seem very accomodating and friendly.

I find that J Crew runs smaller through the arms and shoulders than AT. I'm a petite (5'1) so have narrow shoulders, but apparently have disproportionately large arms; I often have to size up in J Crew (and Banana Republic) tops as they seem to be cut for people with large torsos and stick-like arms, when I am built opposite (and thus my tailor loves me). For the record I am a 34C and generally take an 8p in AT but a 10p in J Crew tops/blazers.

Thanks, Red - that's been pretty much my experience with J. Crew too! I think that's why I always end up at Ann Taylor for jackets, because they fit me well.

Just FYi. I find that AT and especially ATL run larger than J Crew, which is smaller mainly through the arms and shoulders for me. I would typically wear a J Crew 6 and an ATL 4 or 6. But J Crew sizing is less generous, IMO.

I tried this jacket on in the fall (it's beautiful by the way) and I definitely had to size up to fit the shoulders and arms. Some of the sizing at J Crew is almost like juniors sizing in terms of fit in the bust or arms and I can never seem to figure out my size in tops there so as tempting as it is, I stay away from final sale unless I have already tried on the item.

Problem... when you have prices this low..instore inventory is low, so you only have random sizes...like a 2 and a 10 . if any at all The possibility of a store having an 8 & a10 this late stage of the game for measuring over the phone is unlikely.

Ok I have nothing useful to add re sizing, but I just wanted to chime in as another velvet fan. I have a maroon velvet blazer I bought last time I was in the US (for $16 from forever 21 - bargain!!!) Its probably a bit short, but I do love it!
