All this time that boyfriend jeans have been popular, I've never been a fan of them on me. Today I found a pair that I really liked the fit of, but they have a gap in the back. It isn't worth having a $20 alteration done on a $30 pair of jeans, is it? That sounds crazy to me- now they're a $50 pair of jeans.

It doesn't sound crazy to me -- would you pay $50 for a pair of really well-fitting boyfriend jeans? If the answer is yes, then go for it.

But for $50, couldn't I find a pair of boyfriend jeans that were better quality AND fit me?

Khris would you be wearing a belt with them? Mine gape but since I always wear a belt with them I've never done the alteration and they've been good like that.

If you like the denim (quality + wash) and the cut, I'd say it's worth getting the alteration

Jeans are durable, so I think you'd get your money's worth out of the alteration.

Speaking of BF jeans - Lilypup and I walked the local shops today... Old Navy, AE, Express, F21, H&M, etc. Boyfriend jeans were everywhere and no crops!

If belts are fairly comfortable for you, maybe get the jeans and wear with a belt, as an experiment in how much you like them. Then you would know whether to spring for alteration or just keep wearing them as is.

It's hard to say since you haven't tried the $50 boyfriend offerings. If I knew for sure you'd find jeans that fit as well in the $50 range I'd say hold out and wait for a better quality pair. I find the quality of zippers to be the biggest difference in $30 jeans and $50 jeans.

If you don't have the time to wade through tons of pairs of jeans for the pair that fits just right off the rack, then the cheaper pair plus alteration might be worth your sanity.

So did this pair fit better than this style fit in the past? or has your eye just adjusted? If it's just your eye that has adjusted I would wait for a better pair. For me, $30 jeans last less than a year, and better jeans last until I grow tired of them.

eta: My $30 jeans are Old Navy and Target. My "better" jeans are Gap and Kut.

These really do fit better, and even though they are from Target they seem better made than the other jeans I have had from there.

I may be wrong, but I take fit over quality. If it fits well I'll take care of it and wear it until it dies. If it's better quality but not as good of a fit it's more of a waste because it will just sit in my closet until I can finally release it without guilt about the money.

I have all of my pants taken in at the waist. It is just my shape and it doesn't matter to me if they are $20 or $100 pants. They won't make me happy until they are altered. I say go for it.

There's also a good chance that another pair, at the higher price point, would also need the waistband taken in for gaping since you're an hourglass.

Agree with Traci, Shelly and Aida... I even had the back of the waist of my shorts taken in... Fit is important or you wouldn't want to wear it at whatever quality.
Also think about it. If you haven't loved bf jeans till now, it probably isn't about that trend... Just this pair that fits well. May be this is more of your personal style?

I pay $15 to hem every pair of work pants I own. Curse my short legs! (But not short enough for petite)
