work shirt gripe - YouLookFab Forum

I work in aerospace, which is totally cool. But it's also totally male-dominated, which means that when there's work-related clothing (which maybe qualifies as "gear"), it's all man-style.

I just got an email inviting me to purchase stuff commemorating the shuttle program (which we worked on, and which is coming to an end). Here are my choices:

Short sleeved adult crew neck t-shirt (with or without pocket)
Adult collared golf shirt (with or without pocket)
Adult crew neck sweat shirt
Adult full zipper hooded sweat shirt

Argh!! I'm a short necked, full bosomed, short waisted adult female - crew neck t-shirts look like shit on me. Golf shirts make me look like I'm trying to be a male engineer. I already have too many hoodies.

But I want one of these things - it's got a garish picture of the shuttle coming at you with the planet in all its glory behind it, in turn surrounded by a bronze star, which is on top of an American flag (I warned you it was garish), and it says "We Made History: Challenger Discovery Atlantis Columbia Endeavour: America's Shuttle Team 1981-2010".

I mean, who wouldn't want one?

Oh, Katja, the horror of crew neck shirts! I just recently read a great tutorial for taking one of those horrible ill-fitting things apart and reassembling into something fab on a sewing blog I read. Let me go see if I can find it.

Too bad! Did you ask about other options? A lot of times these shirts are made by a company who offers other things. Maybe you could get something else for a higher price.

It would require that you either have basic sewing skills, or can bribe someone you know with sewing skills. I've heard that some sewists are unable to resist tasty baked goods, but maybe that's just a nasty rumor.

The tutorial is really just a starting point--there are a lot of different ways you could go and still wind up with a lovely space shuttle shirt.

Oh! Also, I totally forgot to mention this, but another alternative would be to use something like Spoonflower to print your own fabric with the art on it and have it made up into a great shirt, or do some drawing and use a screenprinter (ie, Gocco, etc) to transfer the drawing to an existing shirt.

I was also going to say that you could buy a tee and use the design to put on something else (like a patch). What about just framing it?

This might actually work. I'd bypass my company and go straight to the printer - maybe they would put it on something else.

Oh man, that is just lame. I LOVE Melissa's link. Would you be interested in spending a bit to get that done if you can't get it printed otherwise? I am sure someone would tackle this project and it would look so cool.

You could also make a pillow out of the crewneck.

What about getting the sweatshirt and using at as loungewear?

Like Rosie, I was also thinking of turning a shirt into a pillow.

If you have several shirts from differnt things you could have them made into a quilt. Our theatre does a musical every summer and they always have t-shirts made for it. We have a beautiful quilt on display in our lobby that is made of years and years of musical t-shirts
