I spent some time on Saturday re-organizing my closet, to move out the summer things and move in more fall items. I realized that almost everything fits into one of my two color capsules:

Black/white-cream/berry (fuchsia and burgundy)

Gray/cream/navy

Of course I am "allowed" to borrow from one to the other...like pairing a gray top with a black bottom! And there are a few outliers such as a couple of sweaters in other colors like purple or green.

I still have about 10-12 pieces that are more for cold weather so I will be adding them to the mix in a month or so. I may end up reorganizing to separate back into categories but I kind of like it like this...I even included 3 scarves in each capsule.

I did have some possible outfits hanging together but just took some photos of those to help me remember them. (Yesterday's outfit came from the navy capsule- navy jeans, gray cotton sweater, multi scarf and gray suede booties.)

Does anyone else organize their closet by color and/or capsule?

This seems like a neat idea, I might try it out. I haven't really done any capsules at all yet.

I'm very impressed with how you have organized your closet. I love the colors you have chosen for your fall/winter capsules. I'm inspired to try this myself. My closet has a few rudimentary capsules with lots of holes but I'm a beginner trying to learn. Angie and the Forum members are fabulous teachers.

How fabulous-- this should give you lots of inspiration for experimentation! I hand mine by item type--- otherwise I would have a black blob and a small confused rainbow. Plus, it makes it easier to put short sleeves further out of reach (but not out of the closet) in winter, etc.

No time to write much at the moment, but I think you just solved my current problem...how make navy make sense in my black and gray dominant closet. Will give this some thought today. Thank you!

Oh, everything is broken down into capsules in my closet...

Now I feel bad about myself I couldn't organize a closet if my life depended on it. All I can manage is pants and dresses on that rail, blazers and some other stuff on that one, and tops up there. I have vivid dreams of owning a beautiful walk-in closet with a leopard print rug, a chandelier, a pull-out drawer for sunglasses, a fridge for champagne, and room for clothes. I'd never come out. And I'd organize it better

Oh Lisa, please don't ever let me make you feel bad! I probably spend way too much time in my closet and I don't encourage anyone else to be so damn OCD about it. If you've got champagne in your closet, I'm coming to help you organize it!

I organize by category, then color. I love the cohesiveness of your closet.

I organize by color, then category (black tops hang together from sleeveless to long sleeved, then bottoms from skirts to pants, then dresses, then toppers. ). Items that are a print with black background come in their category after the solid black. Across the closet I go from light (white) to dark except for navy/ink, which is too much like black in an unlit closet and needs more separation. Those are the neutrals. Then come colors, light to dark. I treat navy like a color and put it after lighter blues. This has worked well for me and makes it easy to find something quickly. In the evening I usually choose an outfit for the next day, pull those pieces and hang them on the back of the closet door.

I have a very ordered closet too:) I hang items by type and then by colour. I have all seasons together because our weather can be unpredictable and I have a lot of items that are transeasonal.

Hey I like lisap's idea - especially the fridge with champagne

The bottom two racks in my ultra small closet are organized by color and then sub organized by item. The top rack is for skirts, pants, and camisoles (I hang those on baby hangers).

I organize my closet by category, not color. About once a week I have to reorganize it because stuff gets put back anywhere. ( by me!) but, I plot my next week's outfits on a spreadsheet and once a week make sure the pieces I want to wear are clean, pressed and accessible. I started plotting my outfits way back in high school. It was a way to pass the time in boring classes!

And you would think that because I've worked in retail for 45 years that I'd keep my closet like I'd keep the floor in the store, but when I come home I've had enough of that!

My closet is organized by category too (tops, blazers, cardigans, dresses, pants, skirts) but reading all the comments here has me seriously considering organizing by color now. It would be about 75% black though, so not sure that's the most efficient method.

Last year it was organized by silhouette...I realized that, after color, the shape/length of a top determined what bottoms it works with. So I had shorter tops together, which worked with more slouchy bottoms, mid length tops to pair with jean style pants, and long tops to wear with slim bottoms.

I've moved away from wearing slouchy pants so the two broad color sections, divided by category within them, feels right now.
