WIW...a recent greyed color? - YouLookFab Forum

I (sorta kinda) impulse-bought this Free People dress https://www.freepeople.com/sho.....quantity=1 recently in the Venetian Red shade, which I think? is a greyed color. To my eye, it's more rhubarb than any type of red, but I don't write catalog copy, so what do I know?

Anyway, I wore it to high tea with a couple of friends as part of my recent birthday celebrations, and was told that the color was very flattering to me. Surprising maybe, because I'm fairly warm-toned, but I think the reason that these kind of "off" colors sometimes look good on me is that I am quite low-contrast. To the point that I always wear at least some makeup or my facial features disappear into nothingness. Bright colors overwhelm me totally. I could be completely off on this...I just wanted an excuse to post a pic of my cute dress since I had one on my camera roll, lol.

That is lovely! It looks muted to me, although perhaps more with a bit of brown than grey? Not sure if that's a thing In any case it looks great!

What a great dress on you. So cute with the hat! I agree with Helena that this color looks a bit warmish, which I think is what you may be getting at, too, Andrea, with your comment about rhubarb. Like a rhubarb red with black added, maybe. (It's so hard to tell in photos, too.)

I think that’s an interesting point about contrast amd muted colours.

Also, there are different ways to mute colours - you can also mute a colour, for instance, by mixing in its complement. And in practice, with actual dyes, it’s even more complex.

I think you all are probably right--maybe it's muted more with brown/grey or black than real grey! Thanks for all the love for the dress. It's as comfortable as a nightgown but the one-sided ruching gives it just enough shape and detailing that it doesn't look like a nightgown (or so I tell myself.)

Inge--that bag has got to be 13 to 15 years old! It's B. Makowsky (?) which is an extinct brand I think. I wanted to take a small-ish crossbody bag, and the one I'd normally use (tan with black) clashed with the beanie and the warm grey boots I was wearing. So I was glad not to have donated it the last time i purged.

Suz--I fixed the link, though I notice that since earlier in the day the Venetian Red color is no longer showing on the website.

It is hard for me to see the color but it does look warmer rather than cooler. Regardless, great look on you!

Oh! It definitely looks a bit brownish at the link. Interesting! It also looks like a really great casual dress and super cozy!
