Hi Lovely Ladies:)

I love this dress but am not convinced it loves me back.

I wore it last week #3 and really didn't enjoy it ... It just felt boring.

So determined to make it work I had a brainwave and did what I often do when a single piece isn't working...I tried layering.

So I have layered my drapey high low black top over the dress and semi tucked. #1 & #2 (you can't see the belt from the back as its sitting under the top).

I don't think black hose really works so swapped for nude. I felt I needed more skin tone showing to create a better balance of proportions.

So what say you?

I am much happier with this combination but feel I need your wisdom on this one.

I did also try black patent pointy toe flats but the cold weather dictated booties for an extra bit of warmth.

Also I saw my black top on sale and am wondering if I should invest in another one as I seem to be wearing it a lot:)

This is a lovely dress Deborah but I suspect your style has evolved to the point where just wearing it "as is" doesn't do it for you anymore. I absolutely LOVE the styling with the top over it and those gorgeous booties.

First of all, I agree completely that it looks better with the nude hose. Very instructive for me, as someone with light hair. Thank you.

Secondly, I really like it layered as you have done. But it is tough to see the details. If you find yourself agreeing at all with Anna, maybe take off the necklace?

Shannon, thanks and I think you are right, I do seem to need add a 'something'.The dress is only about 12 months old and I do love it so I am keen to make it work.

Suz, I used to just wear opaque black tights all winter with everything but Angie has enlightened me! Now the black just seems to heavy particularly with black shoes. I moved to sheer black hose but even that doesn't work sometimes, so looks like I will be investing in more nude hose.

Just a thought Deborah - have you tried black micro fishnets?

I like it layered but I would try a different colour than black.

Shannon yes I have. I don't mind them IRL but they seem to photograph a little strange (hard for me to explain)... in photos at least they seem to create only a slightly more sheer look than the hose in #3.

LOVING look #1....it's so chic!!!

Ceit, I have been known to be a bit color challenged at times What color would you suggest?

I cannot see if you belted under or over the top? Have you tried it without the belt with just this top over the dress? However I quite like #1 as is...

Oh, I don't know --- I am not a natural colour picker either! But I just think the black is too heavy, it looks like you are swallowed up in the large print plus the black top.

Burgundy or a red? I don't know what other pieces you have already. I could see an ink blue too.

Sveta the belt is under the back of the top but the front of the top is tucked. Kind of a semi tuck. I did try it this morning with out the belt and I liked the look but I felt it needed a high heel and I have to do running around today so wanted to wear a medium heel instead.

I just had a poke through some of your older posts...what would that green sweater look like over the dress?

Love the booties in #1 with this. What about purple against the grey? Perhaps a purple blazer or cardigan?

I like it with the sweater, booties and light stockings. I am not sure if the belt adds or not. Maybe with a red necklace? Only if you aren't happy - I think the first look is great.

Lisa, purple is a great idea too. I do have a purple cardigan that I might be able to belt over the dress, but a purple high low top could be nice and I wouldn't mind buying one if I could find a nice one.

Shevia thanks:) I like that idea. I am feeling relatively happy with the outfit but I want it to be between an 8 - 10 otherwise I am not keen on keeping the dress.

the dress would look great with any jewel tone. It could be shirt, jacket or accessory. Love the booties.

I like #1/2 but it is rather maximal (not necessarily a bad thing). Did you try the dress, unlayered, but with the hose/booties you have in #1/2?

Aida for me this is minimal maximal lol... does that make sense

Maybe leave off the necklace? I added it because I felt it added softeness and something tocreate a break between the black and my face. Perhaps the bare skin there is enough?

Hah Deb, this is very true! With #1/2 I think no necklace would definitely be better. This way you can pile on a dramatic scarf if you wanted 0:)

Interesting.:). Aida a scarf would continue the maximal look no? Consider me a student:). What would make a scarf work better than the necklace? xx

I hope you don't mind I am back with another question. I am wondering if it would be an idea to shorten this dress turning it into a tunic? Thinking about it I am wondering if it's just too much pattern that would look better broken up by being shorter and worn over leggings, pants or jeans?

That might work Deborah, but I actually LOVE #1! It almost looks like a black top with a black cardi over top. The semi tuck is brilliant and I love seeing a bit of belt. Bring it!

Deb, I think a scarf would be better for the maximal look because it would add another texture rather than just another "thing" (if that makes sense?). Your particular maximal style is always very texture rich, which is what made me think of a scarf over a necklace for you
