WIW - It seemed like a good idea at the time...

Hi gang!
OK, here's my assessment of this outfit - each piece is unique and adorable on its own, but together they seem to compete with each other. What do you think? I love, love love the top - it's all fringy and silver-studdy, and I have always loved the skirt. The boots were a last minute "oh heck, why not?" decision, but when I look at the photo, I'm thinking it's kind of a schizophrenic outfit. Any thoughts?

I agree with you... the top and skirt aren't working well together. The boots are great and would be perfect with either the top and simpler skirt/jeans or the skirt with a plain black blouse and jacket maybe?

I can see why you would love ALL these pieces!

Sometimes it is hard to tell if the outfit is really as it appears in the photos; I have the sense that in this case, the flash may be altering colour values? If so, that makes it a bit hard to judge.

But if not, I really like QM's suggestions. Top with jeans or simpler skirt, skirt with a different top. Shoes with top and jeans.

All the pieces are fun and attention grabbing. They fit beautifully. I agree with queenmum to pair the top or skirt with simpler/solid pieces so they don't compete for attention.

I think the main problem is the even proportions, which is equally dividing your body in half, between the top and skirt. It may work better if you had a solid column of color with different shoes but probably not because uneven proportions are just more visually pleasing.

Have you seen Imogen Lamport's post on the golden mean ratio, which explains and illustrates the concept in dressing?

Thanks, everyone! I just went to the post about the golden mean ratio, and that totally makes sense as to why this outfit didn't work in a scientific way. But QM's suggestion also hit the mark - something simple with each "statement" piece. thanks!

I actually quite like the pieces individually - the neckline on that top is very pretty and flattering, and the animal print midi looks totally on trend. The only thing I would change is to swap out either the top for something SLIGHTLY more toned down (but by no means would you be restricted to a totally basic top either!) or a skirt that is either a solid or a smaller scale pattern.
I think I'd even really like the top and skirt together without the top's lacy cuffs, if the top were just a tad shorter. Something about the cuffs & skirt together isn't meshing with my eye; however, I love both the skirt and top as separate pieces, and I don't see this as a bad outfit by any means-just something where my personal preference would be to make a very small tweak.
High five for being so creative and playful and for sharing with us!

I actually like the top and skirt together but am just not crazy about the boots with it. I like the boots on their own but just not crazy about them with this outfit. I do like each of these items alot though.

Hmmm, well Angie has spoken, so there's that! But if is still bothers you, just switching out one of the statement pieces (top, skirt OR boots) for a more plain piece might do the trick.
