I have ruined several things in the kitchen too, Runcarla, and I am also prone to burning, cutting and otherwise hurting myself in the kitchen. I've been more careful lately and have injured myself less.
My most spectacular kitchen accident was when I was getting ready to bake a coconut cake using my grandmother's stand mixer. I first plugged it in (BIG mistake) and then assembled the double beaters into the workings. As it attached, it came on and grabbed up my finger. I immediately unplugged it with my other hand, expecting it to loosen and let go of my finger, but it didn't. DH had gone to the store for a missing ingredient. My kids were there, but they were tiny and paralyzed with fear at my terrified screaming. I got them to open the door, and I picked up the mixer and ran through the snow to a neighbor's house where I bumped the mixer against the door instead of knocking because I couldn't hold the heavy thing with one hand. My neighbor was amazing. She sat me down at her kitchen table and yanked the bars of the mixer apart with her bare hands. I think she had that adreneline-fueled extra strength you read about. I have a little scar but nothing worse. Oh, and after I got checked out at the ER I went home and finished the cake.
I have a cherry red Williams-Sonoma apron that I wear for real cooking and a ruffly dark floral one I put on occasionally for serving Thanksgiving dinner. I use lots of different hot pads, but my favorites are this kind:
