WIW : Granny Chic?

Hi Fabbers,

I have a bit of a negative association with anything that looks like crochet. Yet, at the same time, I am strongly attracted to it. lol

I wore this to work at the store today. The top and jacket are new additions and the jacket was purchased to lighten up my black when working in store. The design is me, but the 'net' effect was something I had to think about quite a bit as I didn't want to look like I was wearing my Grandmothers table cloth lol. In black it would be a no brainer but there is something about the lighter tone. Anyway I decided I liked it and it will layer well over so much of my black and some of my whites.

I can't say that I love it. I think it is the color, but I can't say exactly why I don't like it.

To me the vibe is a lot more romantic, retro and "frilly" than I expected to see on you... So I was a bit taken aback at first. But it does work better at second glance and I can see it being useful for work. It definitely doesn't scream Deborah to me though.

I think one thing that would change the look of it a lot was if the hems had some kind of clean finish.

I too am attracted to crochet, but wonder if it is my style. I have a white crochet dress that I have mixed feelings about!

But I digress. I agree it is different look for you but I like it. It looks more like a fine filigree type lace than crochet. And once again it looks better on you than it does on the model.

I like the abstract patten of the knit alot. The shape is flattering, and the design is a real HEWI -- a third piece for hot weather!

It would look amazing in a white-out outfit, too!

I think I'd like it a lot with an all white or light silver outfit. For me the contrast is a bit high here. Yet I really like the overall idea and as Beth Ann says -- a 3rd piece for hot weather? No brainer to try it!!

I think the abstract pattern of the knit takes it out of granny territory. Now if it was crocheted with granny squares, it would be a different story.

Definitely not granny on you. I saw a lot of these last summer on younger women, but they were more reminiscent of a lace table cloth than yours is. Cute with jeans

I would also like to see this over white, so that it creates texture in your outfit, rather than a lot of movement/business, which it does over black. I'm also not sure these are the best pants with it... a lot of volume right in the hip area

But no tablecloth, and I definitely think you can make it fit with your wardrobe and style.

It looks more spider web than granny crotchet to me.

The way it's shown on Motto is very unappealing to my eye but you have made it look interesting against the all black. I like the high contrast. I'm not so sure how it would go with all white though.

I haven't read the comments, but FWIW think the topper has potential over a column of white or silver grey. The black looks too harsh with the texture and colour of the piece.

I don't/won't see granny/tablecloth -- unless you wear a matching jacket of clear plastic on top!

I think of the crocket as Organic rather than granny.

I think it's very cool looking on you, Deb. To me it looks a little boho, which is a departure for you, so I would call it a wild card and enjoy the different feel it brings to your more architectural style.

I like it over the black and like it better than the way the model is wearing it.
I think the fitted sleeves help a lot in making it not "granny-ish".

To me it does seem a bit grannyish, but agree with other comments and would love to see you wear it with white. Think that would look awesome.

Well quite honestly, I love it! I've read some of the other suggestions and I like them, but I think your outfit looks great as is. I like the sharp contrast of black/white, modern/retro with no granny in sight.

I love crochet things. Now having said this, I suggest what Suz and the a few others have echoed.
It is definitely not granny looking. Love your black toenails by the way.

I agree that no granny effect is in sight. Ditto to Suz and Sara L's remarks.

I have a similar reaction to crochet, but I wound up buying a beautiful lace top in Amsterdam that I layer over a tank and wear with dark jeans as a dressy-casual outfit. The way you style this makes all the difference. I think it has a more artsy-slight boho feel than granny.

No granny look here! I do agree with Angie as I too thought the black was a bit harsh with the romantic feel of the crochet.

Hope you don't mind me saying, to me, looking closer it' s a bit granny indeed:-) but still gorgeous in the outfit as all the other pieces are artsy and avant garde(for me:-)) that I even had to question my own considerations:-).
To be fair, I quite love the quasi spider web pattern and as you said it, too-black would be a no brain-but for white I did have to look twice and to weigh in. Generally, I think a more angular and stric geometric pattern would be easier for "degrannyfying" the whites:-).
In fact I have had this same dilemma all my life with WHITE crocheted toppers for summer, which I always would have loved to own. I wanted one airiest possible and searched for the perfect weight and pattern for sooo long and then settled for this one below which is kind of a sparse bouclé-but still not airy enough. Good for spring, but heavy for summer:-(.

ETA. I personally quite love the sharp contrast between the bl&w like you did here!

I am keen to try a white top underneath and play with the textural elements. My black Kaffy Cami that I'm wearing in these WIW pics is now avail in white (#1).. so tempting, but I do have other white tops to try:)

I must admit that I do like it a lot over the black and the somewhat conflicting necklines is interesting to my eye. The drama of the light and dark together really appeals to me so I will continue to play and see what I can come up with.
