Wiw: downplaying a pencil skirt

Good morning. After a week of reusing old outfits I tried a new one today. I wanted to use my pencil skirt in a more casual way. I paired it with an old favorite Henley in grey and my new maroon scarf with sparkles. The shoes are old, the skirt was also new this fall. I haven't quite decided how I feel about it. What would you change?

First of all let me say you look pretty and trim in this picture so it's hard to critique the outfit, because well -- you just look so good! But I am going to try and make some constructive comments. Here goes.

While the henley dresses down the skirt and heels, the scarf is confusing me. It's kind of dressy so it takes away from the casual henley. I would remove it, or wear a dressier top like a soft cashmere crew sweater. Once removing the scarf, you need to introduce one more casual element -- like leather bracelets or a denim jacket or a leather moto jacket -- so the henley looks intentional. Or to put it otherwise, it needs a bit more company in its mission to casualize this outfit.

I am not a great fan of the sparkles on the scarf. I guess it is "uping" (plus stealing attention) the outfit again. I would loose it...

And once again (3rd x this morning) a fabuliciously gorgeous skirt outfit! I like some daytime sparkle even if for casual, so for me, it's perfect!

Hi Jayne! You look great already, but if you want to add another layer, how about that denim jacket Denise mentioned? I like the scarf and the colors here, and with a denim jacket the outfit would become more balanced, I think.

You're looking great, Jayne! I like this outfit. I don't really see the scarf as dressy -- it's one of those Indian ones with a thread of silver running through? Those read as casual to me. I wonder if this may be partly a climate related critique. Denise lives where it is warm and scarves are rarely needed (they are more of a fashion statement); we live in climates where scarves are often necessary quite apart from whatever fashion role they fill, so our eyes adjust to the look quite easily. Having said that, I personally have a slight poison eye for a scarf worn loose like this -- but that is just my polished urban prince persona talking, and I know you like to be a bit more RATE, so do feel free to ignore that thought.

What a fantastic leather skirt! I can't see your tights, but cotton or wool cable knit tights would give this a more casual look (ok, keep in mind I know nothing of what's in style, hosiery-wise) and I second the idea of a denim jacket. A turtleneck sweater would also be something you could wear to dress down the skirt, not as casual as a henley, but casual nonetheless. I quite like the scarf.

thanks for the input..I love reading these on my way home because it gives me a chance to form my own opinion before I read.

on the way to the train I decided this was not a keeper outfit..and look here...you all came with improvements I can try another day!

Denise, I totally agree on a sweater instead. the Henley is just too casual for me. I can switch out the scarf as well...it was more for color than sparkle anyway.

I am not sure about the denim...I have one but it is so boxy . perhaps I'll try with the Dorothy Perkins white Moto next time?

a to other suggestions...Claire.yes, will bring on wool leggings! it is cold here now.

and suz, a another thicker scarf, I am in learners mode on scarves. I asked a girl at the stop how to tie it. guess I better check out u tube.

oh, and a leather bracelet is a great idea..that should definitely create the right feel to the outfit.

Sounds like you've gotten great feedback already. I agree with your thoughts on how to make outfit sing, but I wanted to say that you look terrific in it. It's worth the effort to figure our what stylings of the skirt bring out your fashion persona.

Hi again Jayne, one way to tie a scarf like you have on here, is to just tuck the loose ends through the loop that's around your neck. I like to do in the bring the ends from the outside, through the loop, so that the loop kind of holds them down next to my body, then fluff. Voila!
