WIW: Caucus site leader

We had our First in the West caucus today. I was a site leader, so I signed people in, helped with one of the precincts, and did trouble shooting, which mainly involved a troublesome ipad. It was around freezing when I left home, and nearly 60 when I got back. I had a great crew and aside from the one ipad, everything went smoothly, and everyone was nice.

Aside... it seems like there are no 'caucuses' in California now...? There used to be caucuses where we'd go vote to choose delegates to the convention... but now, nada...

I listened to a World Service programme about the caucuses, which was fascinating. I am pleased everything went smoothly.

Thank you, everyone. I was stressing about the caucus for at least a week. I had signed up to run a caucus, not be in charge of the entire site. I could have gone more fashiony with boots, etc., but decided that I needed an outfit that I didn’t need to think about, was super comfy and unmemorable yet presentable.

Jane, that’s interesting that our caucus was in the world news. If we weren’t early in the process, no candidate would bother visiting us at all.

Ok... this is totally off topic... I finally found some info that suggests there will be a caucus for delegate election... but it’s buried way down in a PDF... and it’s just a date, no information, no sign up to attend... I can’t remember if it’s always dragged on like this with no info... I discovered several years ago that my fellow co-workers, including my boss, thought the candidate election (the primary) was all there was to it... every state is different...

... anyways, it’s making me grind my teeth... sorry folks... this will probably be my only closest opportunity to vent, the only time the topic will ever come up... lol!

I will have to Google what a caucus is. In our country it is all the Parliamentary members of a particular party: eg “The Labour Party caucus met this morning”.

Thanks, everyone. Even though it ran very well, and was fun, I’m exhausted today. So your kind comments are lovely.

Jenni, we had three precincts at our location, which was our neighborhood elementary school. Our particular precinct has about 700 registered voters of all parties. 99 participated by showing up or early voting. In the caucus a nonpartisan volunteer runs it. First, everyone is counted to determine if their candidate will be viable, which was 15 percent of the people. Then everyone gathered into groups. If their group was too small, they had to regroup in what was called a second alignment. Then delegates for the county convention were chosen. Basically, that’s it.

But when we were signing people in, some thought being a precinct captain for their candidate meant they could do whatever they wanted. We had to tell them they were not allowed to bring their various signs into the rooms we were using. A few were unhappy. One classroom that normally had 20-25 children, was crammed with over 50 adults. Plus, we had to make sure we returned the rooms to their previous state.

I’ve been traveling for what seems like the whole month, but have been very curious about how the caucuses work. Not surprising yours went smoothly! I hope for more info next time we meet up, which I hope is soon!

A great outfit for a busy day. It is very interesting to hear how the US Party system works - it does seem like an exhausting process for the nominees.

This is the first year that I (an American) have started to grasp the whole caucus thing. I don't live in a caucus state, and I don't live in a state that allows me to even vote in the primaries, so I have never paid that much attention. Thanks, JAlileen for doing your part for democracy.

DH and I have been judges and techs, but they don't let us wear blue or red for the elections.

Thank you, everyone. I feel more rested today.

Iowa has been caucusing since the 70s at least. We’ve only been caucusing since 2008. One of our senators at the time thought this up to bring more attention to our state. That worked, but many people don’t like it because it takes time. This time they added early voting. My precinct had twice as many people vote early as caucus in person. The in person voting took time, too. I stood in line for two hours, in the cold and wind. Luckily, a volunteer loaned me her down jacket.

Suntiger, I have time to do things because I don’t have a job. I guess I’m retired.
