WIW + Black Jacket Fail--Will it Never End?

Yet another no go, I think, on the black jacket. I love the top on this, but I suspect that the high collar really doesn't do wonders for my short neck. The more serious defect, I think is that the cropped length hits me right where my waist isn't, but my post-babies belly is. Sigh. Unless you all think that I'm crazy, this one goes back too.

BTW, hubs made funny quip on this for the basketball fans among you. I said I thought it was a bit too large. He was puzzled. I explained it was supposed to be a "shrunken" blazer. He replied, "I thought that was Damon Stoudamire!"

So, to make myself feel better, I went with a tried and true outfit today: navy lace top, white pencil skirt and snow leopard shoes. Aaaahhh.

Looking forward to hearing your takes on why this jacket was a fail. Onward to better jackets....

How does the neckline look with your hair down? Or do you always wear it up?

And can I ask who made the jacket?

We've all been through this with some item or another! Mine was and always is boots.

Where is this from? I can't wear that kind of neckline, but I don't think it's bad on you. I just think you will KNOW the right jacket when it comes along. The Theory jacket was like being struck by lightning. I am keeping my eyes open for you!

I think the neckline of the jacket looks good, but maybe doesn't work so well with that shirt. I wonder if it would work over a darker-patterned shell or even over a lace blouse?

The jacket is very feminine and I think it could look nice. (That said, if you have to work too hard, it may not be right for you...)

As for the jacket, I'm with you on that. It's not "the" one. Man oh man, shopping is hard work sometimes! Cheering you on from the sidelines. I went out today, not really intending to buy anything, but maybe just try a few things on. I did try a few things on, some that I liked a whole lot, one of which was an actual wardrobe hole that i need to fill....but nothing, nothing fit.

I like the neckline and shoulders on you but feel it does not hit at the right point. Can you find one that hits where your lace top does? That is quite a flattering length on you. You look like a rectangle with model-like slim hips so you can wear tops and jackets this length. On me, that length just emphasizes my hips (hourglass-pear shape here).

My bf is a baseball freak as well but your DH's joke went right over my head. I'll go to games with him and learn some of the names of the SF Giants players but that's it!

I keep thinking of one of the first outfits I ever saw you in, it a white blazer, black skirt and those really cool black and white shoes. The cut of that blazer was immaculate on you, perfect for your body type in every way. I hope I'm remembering correctly, was it a Gibson linen blazer?

This jacket seems to be the complete opposite of that one. It's cut very straight and severe (and cool, to be sure) but it seems to hide your lovely waist curve. As cool as it is, I'm not sure it's doing your figure any favors like the other one did. I'm so sorry that this one is giving you fits. Hopefully you'll learn something about blazer cuts the way you learned about shoes that don't work for your lifestyle. Don't give up. You'll find the perfect one.

With a shrunken jacket like that, you need to wear it with a longer top, or a dress. I'd try that first before you give up on this one!! This could turn out to be your perfect cheeky jacket...

I'm not an expert and struggle with cropped jackets, but seems this is too short for jeans or slacks perhaps the length would be better with dresses...?

Ladies, I'm always glad to share the 411. The jacket is a very affordable one from ASOS. It cost under $70, is a nice feeling and looking poly blend, and is machine washable. I ordered it and received it within about a week. It fit true to size. I ordered a little big out of concern that it was going to be juniors sizing, but it wasn't. Here's the link:

I like the jacket well enough that I was toying with the idea of trying it just a little smaller, to give it a little more fitted look. However, I think the boxy shape (so right Claire!) and the short length (true that, Denise!) are wrong for me. Still, free shipping and free returns might tempt me. Shiny is so right about the longer top underneath. Something long and ruched will do wonders for me. And I've been stuck with the idea of a white tee, but that's too restrictive. White tee not mandatory. Thanks for reminding me of that Clara!

I think that if I'm looking for figure flattery (and I am) I really need to go for a hip length jacket with some waist shaping and a higher stance. But how to keep that from being boring. So challenging! Still I have another HL on its way to me, so maybe that will work. Thanks again ladies!

BTW, holy wow, Claire you have a great memory. That was the white Gibson blazer. I love that jacket. Maybe I'll have to have it remade custom with this jacket's neckline and an interesting fabric.

Try it with a dress, I like that suggestion. I am an apple which makes cropped jackets a pitfall, but here is a cute one that I got on sale mid summer. Not available anymore, but just to give you an idea.

Thanks, NPM! When I first bought it, I really wondered how often I would wear it. It turns out that it really is a perfect match for my crisp, tailored style. I'll be in mourning when pencil skirts are too passe' to wear anymore. And congrats on getting your old name back! Nice to see you around.

Una, thanks dear! I will look at those. I glanced quickly and thought they looked very interesting. It'll give me an excuse to buy a size down in the posted jacket too, so that I can see if it being a little less boxy works magic. Not that I expect it to. I think Denise hit it right on the head when she said hip length works best for me.

My poor UPS and USPS guys. I'm torn between pity for them for all the hard work I put them through and feeling like it is a-okay because I offer such job security!

Nicole, thanks for the idea and the picture! I'm going to try a little bit more with this one, but my goal is to get a jacket to wear with jeans and a tee, so if I can't make it work with them, then no go.

Aw, I actually do like the jacket a lot, but I think it'd be an over-dresses only kind of a deal. :T

Keep at it - while you're investing, why not invest as much time as you need, right?
