WIW and trip report - Mexico City

Mexico City was great. Many thanks to Angie and abc for their advice on packing. The weather was in the mid-70's and sunny every day. It was a little chilly in the mornings but warmed up by lunch time.

I was a little apprehensive about this trip for a couple reasons. I've traveled with my kids and I know they're good travelers but I've never taken them on this kind of "city" trip - lots of walking, sightseeing, museums, restaurants, etc. It wasn't a sit-around-at-the-beach or run-around-in-the-woods type of trip. They were great though, even the 5-year old. My brother met us there and we all stayed in an Airbnb. We took the Metro around the city and didn't have any problems. It was the kids' first subway experience and they thought it was fun.

#1 - My final version of what I packed -

one chambray dress
Tops - 2 long sleeve blouses (pink, navy polka dot), one short sleeve blouse (black/white spotted), one tee (black/white chevrons), black sweatshirt (didn't end up needing)
3 pants - blue jeans, black jeans, and olive cargos.
Toppers - white cardigan, utility jacket
Black boots, white sneakers
Pink scarf, blush down vest (didn't end up needing)

#6 Lunch
#7 - Carvings at Teotihuacan
#8 - Ceiling of cathedral (not sure which one - we visited several churches/cathedrals)
#9 - Diego Rivera murals at the Palacio Nacional
#10/11 - Lunch - seabass and pork/guacamole tacos
#12 - Hot chocolate - milk with a chunk of chocolate. The kids loved it.
#13 - Chapultepec Park - the Central Park of Mexico City
#14 - Breakfast - My kids absolutely loved the European style coffee and pastries at many of the breakfast places in our neighborhood. Breakfast is their favorite meal and they were in heaven.

I don't have a picture of what I wore on the plane on the way back but it was basically the black jeans and boots with the navy polka dot top. Thanks for looking!

Oh, I forgot to mention how well-dressed everyone in Mexico City was. My brother even noticed and said "we're all under dressed here except you, Sara". My kids didn't understand why no one wore shorts. 10 year old - "Aren't they all hot?"

When you asked for advice re Mexico City, it reminded me of the time I visited with my parents. The airline lost my suitcase for half the trip. I wore my travel outfit until they found it - a wool turtleneck sweater and cords. We kept thinking, “they’ll bring it today.” I think that’s why I’m so paranoid about my travel clothes - you just never know. Your travel outfit is great, though, and I love your dress, too.

Sounds like a wonderful trip and your family just looks so nice! We like to go to cities with our kids and I am always amazed at their interest in museums and historical landmarks. It is like seeing everything anew.

YAY! I had been waiting for this trip report! So glad you enjoyed your time here. I'm thrilled that your travel capsule served you well. And I am tickled pink that your boys (and all of you) took to the city vacation. Glad you got into breakfasts here, they're serious about them (mostly bc we don't eat lunch until about 2-3pm so you better have something to hold you until then!). Rachylou - Even in Puerto Penasco, which is small beach town with lots of tourists, no one looks scruddy. People are dressed up to go the grocery store - always full make-up and hair done. So I wasn't really surprised by Mexico City. I was a little surprised by so many men in suits but we stayed in a nice neighborhood (my brother called it hipster Mexico City).

Jules - The kids did great but we didn't plan super full days. We had big breakfasts and didn't worry about getting started early. We knew they couldn't go all day anyway so might as well relax while we could. We stopped for lunch at a sit-down restaurant every day just so everyone had a chance to rest. We also bribed them with gelato and pastries (bakeries were everywhere).

abc - The breakfasts were awesome! I think they were the highlight of the trip. All the food was great, actually. I'm sure we'll be back. It was an easy trip from Albuquerque and there's so much we didn't have a chance to do. Plus, my husband enjoyed practicing his Spanish. He said he could tell he was getting better even after just 4 days. My Spanish skills are hopeless although I can read it much better than I can hear or speak it.

I love Puerto Penasco! Hair and makeup, yes, but clothes? Can’t say I ever thought about that. Lol. The whole of the Americas, I feel we dress the same. Haha!
