Thank you for all the kind comments. I can see the gilet being such a workhorse for me - it seems to just 'pull together' so many of my outfits.
Specifically, Sisi, I too am trying to build a more refined wardrobe and resist the continual push to consume + throw. I try to give more conscious thought to how each purchase can work in the scheme of all wardrobe items. Keep up tormenting your co-workers - they'll hopefully get the message.
Runcarla + SaraL, I visit a variety of thrift stores from those well organised + colour sorted through to more haphazard places (can be fun but you really have to be in the mood to work hard), plus very occasionally car boot sales or markets.
I don't shop in consignment stores at all.
I leave no stone unturned - I've found treasures in all sections (children, mens, teens etc)
I agree Greyscale that the fabric + items can indicate if they've stood the test of time, and I particularly treasure some items I've found that were manufactured when there was more attention to detail, cut + fit.
