WIW 5-3 - Pink and stumpy - YouLookFab Forum

Hm, that does sound a bit pornographic! But really, all it is is that I am wearing a pink tank top, and wondering if the skirt length is a bit stumpifying. It may be the camera angle? It's very hard to get an idea when the camera is up by my head, but then again, that's probably the level where most people's eyes are that are *looking* at me, right?

- Pink American Apparel tank
- Eileen Fisher voile-lined black skirt
- Chie Mihara pumps
- vintage Helmut Lang black denim jacket with cuffs

Something about this is not gelling for me. Maybe the pumps need to be pointier, or the heel shorter, or the jacket hit at a different point at my waist. I do like this skirt, it has awesome pockets and a sweet inner voile lining. But it hits at the thickest part of my calf, so you don't see the nice curve up above it. Hm.

Also, I am wearing my workout gear under this, because I am going to the gym after work.

It could just be the camera angle? I don't know how people take flattering photos of themselves while holding their phones but i cannot manage it for the life of me.

I think the look is pretty, not stumpy, FWIW ;). Although I do prefer the closer cut of the tank to the boxy cut of the jacket with the flowy skirt. I wonder if the wider silhouette is making you feel less streamlined? Maybe a closer cut blazer or cardi as a topper would improve the silhouette issues you see?

It could be the photo angle, or it could be that the jacket needs to be just a tad shorter ideally. BUT I think you look very good --- this is more on the level of nitpicking between a 9 and a 10, you know?

I have stopped worrying about how dumpy I look to most people, seeing as at 4'10" even 5-foot-tall petites are looking at me from a seriously foreshortening angle (evidence: today's photos on each of my threads taken by SO, crouching to what he *thinks* is my height... and missing by a few inches! I know I'm pretty bloated and rotund today, but YIKES!). What I'm trying to say, by way of blathering, go with what looks right to your own eyes, seeing yourself at a distance of at least 2 or 3 feet from the mirror. It's the best you can do, emulating what seated people will see or people around the same height --- if you try to figure out how to look right to people taller than you, you WILL go nuts!

I like the jacket with the skirt, actually. I think the issue is the skirt and the shoes together - they are both good on their own but they bring out each others' classic/girlish tendencies.

Re photo height, I think we automatically correct for the perspective distortion in real life, but not in photos.

You're looking very slim and trim there in your pink tank I like the skirt length, but it definitely is midi. Very cute and a little retro together with the Chie mary janes!

The jacket is fab, but I wonder if unbuttoned gives it too much visual volume on top. So, with the fuller skirt, it's too much. Did you try buttoning one or two on the jacket?

This skirt is not stumpyfying at all, Dana! It's gorgeous and works beautifully here - great length. Nice heels too. The mary jane strap does create a horizontally cutting line, but the heels and your hair colour bring it all together. I see a flattering effect.

It's so interesting to me how you would find this combination *possibly stumpying" - but cropped pants worn just above the ankle in a dark colour and un-tapered *not* stumpyfying.

@ Angie - I think it's about where the line of the garment hits on my calf. I have very big calves and little ankles, so I feel like if that line is off, my legs look weird. Maybe "stumpifying" is the wrong word - chunkifying?

I totally agree! "When the line is off - the legs look weird" - but we have a different opinion on the length of that line

I like this a lot! I think your legs look shapely, not chunky. The heel pushes up your calf muscle into a nice curve. Not a chunk in sight!

I also love the color of the tank, and the textures of the skirt and jacket. It's great!

Dana, it's the camera angle for sure - no stumpage at all here. When you take the pic with the camera set up near your head, it's going to make the things near it (head/shoulders) look a bit bigger/longer than the things far from it (hips/legs). I try to place my camera at about boob/waist height if I can... I realized after many years of tears that my mom always took pics at an angle that made me look like a football player.

That skirt is fantastic and you are rocking the bright pink top. The jacket is looking a bit voluminous but it's most likely part of the angle thing.
If you like it in person, don't really over analyze the photos as they can play tricks on you.

I don't think you look stumpy, and your legs look great. I admire a good calf. That is my taste. I despair when mine are too skinny.

You look great! It's a more feminine look than sometimes because Mary Janes, even strong ones like these, can read a bit lady-like. But you balance it all really well and it still feels like a "you" look. I LOVE that skirt.

Something about this made me expect you to break out in song and dance -- the line of the skirt -- the MJ's, which are what we call in the theater "character shoes." You look like a leading lady -- and yes, more girly and classic than is your usual, but very graceful and easy. I like it a lot! I'd try pairing the skirt with some of your more "typical" tops and see what you think.

Please don't shorten the skirt! The fact that it's flowy means your lovely calf curve will be visible when you walk (and when you're sitting). I think it totally works. Love the pink top with it too! I see no leg chunk.

@Angie - wouldn't the line be different for a skirt and pants? With pants you can see the leg line further up than in a skirt.

I really like the skirt length! To me the shoe strap causes a strong break; and also, if you were going to have a break anyway I feel like booties or gladiator somethings might be more you. Do you tuck your tops much? Moving the waist line of the skirt up would also make it look "taller".
