WIW - trying the chunky sweater/pencil skirt combo

I was very skeptical about this combo when Angie posted the other day. So, I thought, "There's a challenge!" - what better reason to try it out? So, here is my rendition. IRL, I think the green of the sweater is better picked up by some of the colors in the paisley print of the skirt. I thought the boots "balanced" the more casual, earthy vibe of the sweater. But I still wasn't completely sold. What do you think?

Not totally convinced either, tho. I feel desirous of some softer draping somewhere - either in the sweater or the skirt - like maybe if the skirt were soft trousers.

With the denim jacket it's perfect. I think it's the scarf and skirt print. If you wear without jacket, no scarf but maybe pop a collar under sweater?

I like it! The only thing that is bothering me is the skirt looks sort of light and summery and the rest looks more wintry, but that might just be my monitor. Otherwise, and even so, you look great!

Thanks, everyone. I'm chuckling at the opposing opinions on the jacket. Truth be told, I wore the jacket to work (it was 43F) and then took it off for the rest of the day.

Kelly, the boots are my Frye Veronicas - they are SO great for those of us with substantial calves but very little height.

TraceyLiz, your version is very pretty - that green bag is TDF!

Shevia, you may be right - it is a summer skirt, after all - I was hoping I could at least wear it to transition to winter, but perhaps not.

To my eye this jumper is not quite bulky enough, do you have one that is bulkier and longer? I also think this scarf might be a bit dainty for this outfit, I'd love to see a longer one to balance the look. I think you have almost nailed this one; kudos for diving into a new look!

Those boots are fabulous on you; Frye should rename them Sarah :).

Even though I said on the blog that I don't like the idea, I do like this on you, actually. I think somehow the more casual vibe is working better for me than trying to make a chunky sweater completely dressed up, like on the blog examples? I really like the choice of skirt and sweater--a non-obvious pairing, but it really works. I actually do agree with Lynn that the scarf could be a bit heftier, but the color and pattern are right on. I do prefer it without the jacket. Wow, that little jacket is all you need for 40 degrees? I am wearing a wool trench! It does get very cold here (like 0) but really only for a couple weeks.

I' not sold on this combo in general but Sarah you may have just converted me:). I like this a lot on you. Great choice of colors and the denim jacket is a suitable topper. Did you feel good in this?

I love this one - I think it has a great balance of skirt dressed down by slightly rugged boots. I prefer it without the jacket as somehow it seems more fresh (maybe we've been wearing our denim here on YLF long enough that I've grown too used to it?). However, the denim makes a superb outer layer that definitely adds to the outfit.

Does the U have any days off this week for MEA/NEA?

Scarlet made an interesting observation, which I agree with. I like how you've brought the skirt down to casual with the styling, rather than dress *up* a chunky sweater. I may steal the idea! Funny, I actually prefer the version with the jacket.

In this month's issue of Redbook magazine, there's a page that features various ways you can style a red sheath dress. One of the ways is to wear a chunky sweater over it, giving the illusion that you're wearing a pencil skirt. So for all you ladies who own a sheath dress but not a pencil skirt, this may be a viable option.

Scarlet and Lynne, I agree about the scarf - I picked this up over the weekend from Target, but I would prefer one with more volume. I didn't have another scarf in the right colors, however, so I made do.

Sara - sadly, the U does NOT get MEA, but I'm going to take Friday off and we may head north depending on the weather. Do you have any plans?

An Autumn weight skirt would be better.

May I suggest leaving off the indoor scarf and denim jacket.

I also prefer the vibe with dressy shoes, and these boots are very casual. But they work too!

Ah, Angie, this is interesting - I think the look was not working so well for me with the dressy shoes in the examples you posted, so I thought I'd try the boots to see if that felt more balanced. But I will dutifully continue experimenting, and see what I come up with : )
