Wisdom of buying 'similar'?

I could not find either cool strappy tank I drooled after upon seeing J Everyday wearing one online. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....size-small I did find this dress. It has the style element I'm looking for. Does it matter whether it's a dress or a top? Or should I be thinking twice? It's admittedly the cutout strappy element that caught my eye, not that I was filling a 'black tank' wardrobe hole. And yes, I am wary of dresses lately, but this is the easy poly throw in the wash version I find myself actually wearing. Plus I do have a 'rock n roll edgy dress' on my 2014 list.

Depends on the situation. I buy a lot of repeats that are similar (cashmere tunics) but not substitutes. Did you want a tank specifically, or did you want anything strappy? How much are you wearing your dresses?

Hmm, I'll warn you that I have a LBD with a similar type of crossover strappy neckline (although mine is more classic than rocker) and I have a hard time styling it with anything else. The neckline fights with most jacket lapels as well as all necklaces. So I'd say go for it if you are willing to just wear it as is and don't need a jacket or other accessories. (I feel like with a top at least you have the option to switch out things on the bottom, you know?)

It might be worth a try. You could always shorten it to a top if you get tired of it as a dress. What kind of undergarments would work with it?

I have learned that I wear the easy to care for dresses that don't cling. This would be that. Gladiator sandals and a cuff, and I'm done. FL mostly, or summer Tahoe. EDIT: or maybe exaggerated tunic with skinnies or leggings and boots in Tahoe?

Hmmm, I see where Diana is coming from. But it is such a cool dress! Do you have need of toppers with this dress? Will its lack of versatility bother you?

I don't see the same limited topper situation as you all do . . . hmm even J wore both a jacket and a necklace with hers (not that I'm that maximal)

I'm just trying to suss out if having the fun neckline I want is enough of a reason to jump.

I think the length of the back puts it firmly in dress territory. But maybe with leggings?

So, now I have length questions. The front is as short as my olive shirtdress is long, and the back is as long as my white maxi is short in front. Confused?? Oh, to buy or not to buy . . . that is the question.

I was thinking that it's awfully short. You have the figure and I see it working for your style but it does read juvenile to me because of the length. Again, I think that's something you can get away with, if you want to.

Jules, that's my concern . . . the olive shirtdress does not get worn without a legging. but the black dress is longer in every way, except for that very front, which ironically is the longest part of the shirtdress. It that enough, or will I feel self conscious. I don't know. Argh. EDIT: it's too short. I need to walk away from another ALMOST.

I think it's very pretty and would look great with leggings. It would also look great as a dress if you are comfortable with it. Maybe the manequin is taller than you and then the front would not be an issue? If they have a good return policy maybe you can give it a try?

I think you should order it and try it out, Mo. Dresses are harder than most items when it comes to knowing up front whether they will work or not. And have fun along the way. Why not. xo
