Winter Jacket/accessories for kids

Hi Everyone,

our family just booked tickets to spend Christmas holidays in Toronto with my family. It was a last minute decision and now i am fretting about not having enough warm clothes for my kiddo. He does not like to wear any hats during our relatively mild South Bay Area, California winters.
But he will need it there. We will not be doing many snow/outdoorsy activities though. Any ideas where to buy wool socks and warm hats for 6-8 year old boy? He does have a puffer but i still want to buy a warm coat and jacket (preferably with a hood)for him.

Meredith's post of her sitting traffic car is already giving me shivers and a reality check too.

Currently its 52 F in my area and 18 in Toronto area. brrrrrrrrrrr

tips/suggestions/recommendations from mamas living in colder region will be very helpful.

REI has a lot of warm clothes and accessories. They probably have stuff in the store for skiers.

Can your family in Toronto borrow or comb thrift stores for a coat for your son? He probably could not wear it next year and someone they know has something he can use during your visit. Look on Amazon for hats and gloves and socks. I like Smart Wool but I noticed that Uniqlo has children's sizes.

REI in the Bay Area usually has the best selection locally. Or Zappos.

I looked online at REI but didnt get much luck with kids stuff, except for few winter jackets. Thats a good idea to try actual brick and mortor store. Going to do that tomorrow.

You may also want to have one pair of long underwear (or if he has a tighter pair of pjs these can work in a pinch as an extra layer). I'm in Toronto and we've really been hit by a cold wave and tons of snow. He may want to play in the snow too. Bring layers. T-shirts serve as "underwear" beneath pullovers and jackets. There is a store here called "Winners" and they usually have mitts and socks. Though, with this crazy storm, they may be sold out!

I know Nordstrom Rack has a lot of Smartwool socks for women, but I have no idea what their kids' selection is like.

If you decide to go with an online retailer, LL Bean does a good job with kids' outerwear. Their customer service is prompt and has always been accurate, in my experience.

Gap and Old Navy have lots of kids outerwear online. Could you order and have it sent to your family's address in Toronto? Or just pay for the fast shipping at home. Also Zara for kids clothes.

are you near a Uniqlo? reasonable prices....(i think REI would be expensive for basically a one time use)

I've also had good luck with Lands End for coats and hats. Maybe Amazon Prime is better for timing here.

I'm in Ontario with 2 school-age kids. I think you can pass on the wool socks. I think Regular socks are fine with boots---that's what my kids wore this week in -21C/-6F.

You didn't mention this in your original write up but I think your kids will need snow boots and, if they want to play in the snow (of course they will!), some snow pants or at least some splash pants with thermal under layers.

For snow boots, Bogs and Sorels (and their lookalikes) are what every kid wears in Ontario, but they are really snow-specific so really not super useful to you in California. They are about $70 CAD so $50 USD. I think some sort of insulated hiking boot would work in Toronto also, and could be used in California (maybe?). Also, Walmart will likely have some cheap snow boots.

Longjohns have bene bought. Now onto other neccessities.

I lived in totonto for many years when i was single and we always spent summers there, so i am mostly unprepared for kids stuff.
