Winter dressing help

I am mostly a mom on the go who loves jeans of all kinds. I struggle in
the cold new england climate with how to wear sweaters and jeans
without feeling frumpy. What kind of sweaters boxy v fitted/pullover v
cardigan/solids v stripes or patterns go best with which kind of jeans
(or other casual everyday pants--cords, brushed twills, casual velvets
etc)?

Any ideas/advice and pictures are much appreciated.

Hi Dale,
I love to use sweaters and cardigans as a layer over long sleeved Ts. and under my coats/jackets. A colourful scarf will always lift a fairly plain sweater to Fabness, as will long or short boots with the outfit.
If the sweater is roomy or long, fitted jeans , cords or leggings will look great.
More fitted toppers will be fine with bootleg or straight legged pants.
Have an experiment, maybe take some pics and we can go from there?

You can try belting the sweaters or adding a scarf to help elongate you and take away from the sweater. I would also look for fitted jackets to layer up.
I live in Virginia Beach, VA and in my first year of marriage my husband got out of the Navy and moved me to his hometown of Dedham, MA . I lasted 7 months from August until the end of February and asked him to take me back home. It was too cold for my liking and I didn't see myself raising children there. He is a smart man because he brought me home and we are now married almost 22 years...

Anytime we go there in the winter, I shiver and say, "It never gets this cold at home"

The type of cardigan that I posted yesterday, the one with the leather panels, works really well with straight leg or skinny jeans. Slim bootcuts too.

That cardigan is cute, Angie, but I'm dubious about the blend. How much wool vs how much acrylic and polyester? For cold NE climates, you really need wool or cashmere. Skip the acrylic and cotton as they will not be warm enough.

Boxy, bulky and thick does not always translate into "warm" -- it depends on the blend. You want wool. I personally adore cashmere and merino wool because they are warm, drape well, and aren't too bulky. Layer over a shirt, blouse or top, with a cami underneath that, with coat on top, and a scarf, hat, gloves... and you'll be plenty toasty.

My latest fixation is a fair isle pull-over with plaid skinnies. I don't think you can beat the nordic sweater for actually staying warm.

The old-faithful is the crewneck pull-over with a thermal underneath and silk scarf at the neck. The key is deep color and avoiding a baggy fit.
