Winter Boots-Pikolinos? Questions.

Ok, ok, so I know I said I should buy my boots last--but that may be too hard! And they are SUCH a style setter that I feel the need to settle on some first--so I know the direction I'll go.

I am beginning to fall in love, just a little, with these boots:

1) Where can I physically try on a pair in Western Canada? Does anyone know?
2) I need to know--are these winter boots? Will they keep my feet warm at -30 (C)? I will be taking public transit to and from work this winter.

Laura, you must be joking. Zappos doesn't deliver to Canada, period. And definitely not for free!

Did you do a google search for them, Alana? Sometimes I search with the product name and "Canada" and see what arises. Are they for sale at Amazon? They do deliver. But not free.

You could also just search Pikolinos in your city and see what comes up. They might not have that style but you could go to the store that sells the brand and see what they say.

Walking on a Cloud sells this line and has this style although maybe not that colour. It's gorgeous. I don't think they're in Western Canada but they do offer free shipping. Of course, that doesn't help with the cost of returns, if needed. I think here is a Gravity Pope in Calgary. They don't sell Pikolinos but have a vast range of brands.

I just ordered the ankle boot version from NAS. I think they were an Angie pick. The reviews are pretty awesome. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I own this boots in black. I bought them almost 2 years ago and they have gone through 2 winters in Northeastern USA. It gets pretty cold here, though not like Canada.

I LOVE my boots. I find them very comfortable. Even with my significant bunion and narrow heels they are 8 hour ( or more ) standing boots for me. They have a cushy lining that is a little "plump" and gives me more warmth than any of my other non-gear boots. With that said, they will not, alone, keep your feet toasty at the temperature. I wear Smartwool socks with mine or fleece lined trouser socks at those temps. They are not waterproof enough to go through standing puddles. I waterproofed sprayed mine additionally, but if you are going to walk around in slush or icy conditions, this is not the boot.

Alana, Soft Moc also sells Pilokinos, just not the boots. Maybe they'll have them in the fall? Soft Moc does free shipping and free returns in store.

Oh - I didn't notice your question. They're not winter boots. They're fashion boots. I mean, they're not winter boots for our climate. Maybe for somebody who lives in Virginia they would do. But they won't keep you warm and dry for long periods of time, if that is what you mean.

The best boots that combine fashion and true weather functionality are probably La Canadienne, Pajar, and Blondo. They don't come cheap, although Blondos can be surprisingly reasonable at times. And you can find the others on sale if you are lucky.

The best true SNOW boots are probably Sorel or Kamik. Ceit has Sorels and loves them. They don't seem to fit my feet very well so I got Kamiks last winter and love them for snow.

Oh Carter you are awesome! I was just lamenting that those boots weren't in stock in grey on Zappos or Amazon, but now I can try them via Nordie's. Although I'm getting so tired of the order/return cycle.

Alana, from reading the description, the leather is treated as waterproofed, but there's no special insulating lining. I've never been in -30 C weather in my life so I'm no help there.

Well...I would take Isabel's words to heart. If she has them and says they keep her somewhat warm, that's good news. I guess it depends how long you're out and what you are doing.

Ceit--oh, no, not winter boots? When/how does one wear them then? Please forgive my cluelessness.

Using Suz's method, I just found a retail outlet in my favourite mall that carries Pikos--no clue if they have this particular boot, though. I've also found two others --but they aren't open on Sundays (pout).

I can back up Suz's suggestion of La Canadienne as a fashionable line that will also keep your feet warm. I live in a very cold winter climate (northern U.S.), and my LCs kept me every bit as warm as my winter boots this past year, which was a very nasty winter. The only problem with them (at least the pair I bought) is that they have no tread on the bottom, so they are not safe for wearing when there is a lot of ice. And yes, they are pricey. But in my opinion, they are worth it.

Alana, I wear mine in the winter except in extreme weather. For me anything below 10 F or so. They are a great boot if you go from your car into work or into a store, or for me, even waiting for the school bus for my kids. They are pretty toasty for that. With all that said, I wouldn't wear them in a blizzard. the heels and sole have great grip though.

Suz is correct in that I think for the kind of weather you are describing , Sorel and Kamik are just tops. These are not snow boots.

Thanks for the info on those brands, Suz. I do have a pair of bona fide certified -30 boots--I spent good money on them last year--they are Keene's and look like hiking boots. Who knows, with the whole sporty lux vibe they may be spot on trendy.

However, I wanted something a little different--a little more "fashionable" if you will and these are pulling me in--though I am surprised I like them so much. Though if the only way to make them work is with special socks, things may be getting too complicated for me. (I'd have to change socks when I got to work--and while that's not a problem at the beginning of the day--at the end? ew.)

So, in a sense, I have "deep winter" covered (Dec, Jan, Feb) and I can look for a pair of boots for "mild winter" (Oct, Nov). Slushy miserable winter is in March and these obviously wouldn't do--what I need then is a fleece lined rainboot, essentially!

Alana, these would be perfect for "mild winter." That's what they are for. So you can keep up the hunt.

Your Keenes ARE fashionable. Tons of fashion bloggers and celebs wearing that type of boot last winter, anyway. Mostly Sorels, but the overall look is the same.

And yeah, I hear you on March. March madness.

Believe it or not, my La Canadiennes were up to that challenge. Well, except that March was more like February last winter and April was more like March....

Suz--if only mine looked so fab!

I went to the mall where my internet search last night said there was a shoe store which carried Picolinos.

AND THEY ARE BRINGING SOME IN!!
These very boots. GREY! One pair in my size. August 15. They have my name and number in their little book and promised to call.

I kind of had to laugh because I do live in Virginia and used to have a pair of gray Pikolinos (I'd actually just recommended the brand to E) that worked fine for my winters. Which are probably pretty close to Canadian Oct./Nov., except that we whine a lot more about the cold.

Anyway, mine were also tall and gray, but were a lot uglier. (There were a bunch of random details that didn't go together and just ended up looking busy and awkward.) If mine had looked like those instead, I'd probably still have them.
