I should say that this is only one reason.
It's not a great article, & they really did crap research as to options, but the general gist is spot on.

Honestly what torques me most is that mainly the options are online only. Even the mall stores that have bigger sizes, it's only online.
I attended a wedding in October. I went to the downtown Nordstrom, in the entire store my sales associate & I found one ok dress, and one that did actually work (see find). She said if I had given her more notice she could have ordered something. Unfortunately I couldn't plan ahead this time.
I did also look at Macys, but the selection was far from inspiring.

It is a shame that it's so hard to find any "specialty" sizes in stores. It's also a shame that there aren't more fashionable options. I have found several etsy sellers that don't charge extra to make 3X sizes, for what that's worth (and the prices are reasonable!). Metamorphoza is one of them, there are several others I've found but can't remember the names. Of course, they tend toward asymmetric and such, so it might not solve the problem you just had.

Tim Gunn recently went on a rant about this, and I was like "GOOOOOOOOO Tim!!!!!" (link, if you haven't seen it)

Funny, I have some of that etsy's shop item saved. There are other Eastern European shops like Aakasha, who are similar.

Strangely enough I think we might be better served here - there are a few fashion forward retailers who provide a good range of sizes.

Annagybe, YES to Aakasha! (And several other Eastern European shops) Fraktura, EUGFashion, teyxo (I think they're eastern European). And Veselina at Metamorphoza is amazing. I've had her make me a custom order and cannot wait til my seasonal job is happening again so I can order some more from her!

I think I'm just used to it because I've been in that fringe zone my whole life. I don't have trouble finding clothes in my size, but I shop mostly at Target and Old Navy.

Welcome to the world of "plus size " you will find your way. I can fully empathize. I would suggest searching outside of your norm. I would also highly suggest finding a person to create for you what you want. Some can recreate a look or make something by creativity.

You are so unique there are good equivalents out here. Don't give up.

Ideally, I wish we could ALL get the size we want where we like to shop. I often have to get my size online, and have resigned myself to that. I don't mind shopping online actually - and enjoy it more than I used to. It's a logistics problem for you right, Anna?

And when are we going to see you in that fabulous frock.

I guess I'm in the size range you're referring to, but a) yesterday my doctor said my BMI was fine (I know, I can't believe it either!) and b) I live in the sticks so I mostly shop online anyway. When I went to Seattle this summer I was thrilled to visit the "Mother Ship". The nearest Nordstrom is two hours away.

The dress you found is fantastic. I don't get it either. It seems so unusual for business interests to ignore a potential market for so long.

This is a reason why I mostly shop online--there's no point in scouring a department store if the chances of finding something that fits is very low. But it's frustrating, because you have to order way more than you will need, because you don't know how stuff will fit or what the fabric will be like. Like Angie, I just started resigning myself to being an online shopper. If I find something in-store, I am pleasantly suprised.

I agree with Ledonna. I can vouch that taking control of production is empowering whatever your size, and independent ateliers would benefit from your business. Win win!

Yes I got the dress, on discount too, because I was able to price match with Bloomingdales.

Anna -- That dress is beyond gorgeous... and I bet it looks stunning on you. I totally empathize about the "sizing out" issue. I am tall and large framed and have been dealing with this issue for most of my life. (Sigh.) I do most of my shopping online because of this concern. It would be so nice to be able to have the "brick & mortar" experience on a regular basis. CWS listed some fabulous resources... and I am eager to check them out.
