Why I like Angie's prose (a comparison)

I got a new style book out of the library recently (Frumpy to Foxy in 15 minutes flat). While I won't comment here about its advice, I will say that what irked me was a whole book of what I think of as magazine prose.
eg
"One final touch takes you from babe to bombshell: Turn up the heat by sticking a crystal tatto on the back of you shoulder or near your collarbone. Talk about a clever conversation starter!"

It made me realise how much I appreciate Angie's prose, which is more original and interesting.

I actually cringed when I read that! I'm getting vague flashbacks of my mother trying to be hip in front of my friends when I was a teenager. Though in her defense, she never said anything quite that lame.

This is why I love our Angie to bits. She's much more accessible and less...embarrassing. I don't think I have actively searched for style advice anywhere else since finding YLF. It feels like cheating

OT, but this is a major peeve of mine: Why do so many stylists assume every woman in the world wants to be a bombshell and be sexy, and if they don't want that, they must have low self esteem or be repressed or some such thing? Every time I watch WNTW I want to throw a shoe at my television when Stacy and Clinton say that. I actually know more women who DON'T want to look sexy than those who do.

(and one more note: the actual advice about the crystal tattoo is stupid too.)

I love YLF for many reasons. One is that much of what Angie says is original. And the things she says that you can find in other places - well, no one else ever says it quite as well as she does. She's down-to-earth, eloquent, personable, practical, etc etc etc.

Of all the fashion websites and magazines I have read, Angie's is the only one that made me feel like I could actually make fashion work for me, the way I want it to work for me.

YLF is definitely my favorite fashion resource and has most definitely changed the way I dress. In general, I find online resources with real people posting pictures of outfits more helpful than magazines or books.

It was the way they expressed themselves that got me - I can stand it for the length of a magazine article but not a whole book

I have written pretty much all of the available style books and I have to say that Angie bests them all, both in the writing style and the actual advice. I can't wait for Angie's book!

I am also always so impressed with how Angie can put her ideas into words. She is never crass and always current. I agree with Maya about how others assume all women want to be sexy or seductive, again assuming we dress for men other than for our own sense of what makes us feel fab! Now that is sexy!

I love the way Angie sees all body types and variables as beautiful. When I questioned wearing a skirt showing my legs with their age spots, Angie said spotted legs are always welcome with her. I love that.

I love color and fashion, but have never been confident in my own sense of style. Angie's sweet personality (which definitely comes through in her writing) would set me at ease if I was to meet her.

I hope she's writing a book!

Oh god, the style of writing in the section you linked up is painfully awful. Most of the magazines and books that I have read about women's style all make a certain assumption that all women want to look a certain way, mainly some sort of sex-kitten bombshell type creature in four-inch heels. This is why I love blogs, especially youlookfab, as the writers realise that there are many aspects of women's style apart from sexy. Also, Angie is probably one of the best bloggers out there in terms of her writing style. It's friendly, sweet and conversational while still remaining informative and professional. I hope you write a books sometime about style!

On a tangent, I really hate how sexy is defined by many of my friends. So many of them define sexy as short skirts, lots of eye makeup, really tight clothes and lots of cleavage... which isn't my style. I'll do cleavage but will cover up my legs, etc.

I completely agree. I also want to add a few more aspects that I especially appreciate about Angie's writing style:

- Not patronizing: writes about (and to) average women as an intelligent and attractive people, educates and provides suggestions without talking down to anyone
- Positive and constructive: points out something beautiful and interesting in each person, never uses insulting language towards someone who is still working on style
- Sincere: Angie's personality shines through her writing. I have a clear sense of her voice (almost to the extent where I can hear a conversation in my head) when I read her writings, which makes her blogs especially enjoyable.

I agree...I have learned so much from my short time reading the blog and I look forward to it every day. The forum is also fantastic and I am learning so much from all of you. My wardrobe and combinations of what I am wearing have changed 100% since I found YLF. I still have a long way to go, and many, many questions, but I am so glad to have found Angie as well as all the rest of you fashionable gals!

I am a book and magazine lover - there are some good style and beauty books out there, but nothing compares to Angie. Hers would beat out all books as her loveliness is incomparable!

I came across this old thread and just had to add a big HERE HERE to everything that's already been posted!! There are so many affected writing styles out there, particularly when it comes to fashion publications, but Angie's is genuine and refreshing while still being unique! So many mags compensate for dated advice through overly-stylized prose, but Angie is the very opposite. No style over substance here - she uses her good writing to give us all fabulous, concrete advice that works in the real world!
