Why do I look dumpy in this outfit?

So I decided to try one of Angie's floop-proof outfits for a mom-on-the-go... and I looked so dumpy! What did I do wrong?

hi there! you're so pretty! i don't think you look dumpy by any means, but i compared the two outfits and a couple of things jump out at me.

- the first is the top. angie recommends a casual top that is not a tshirt. your top looks to me to be a tshirt. i think you could get away with a casual top or a cool graphic tee that is perhaps a wee bit more fitted. does that make sense?

- the second is the blazer seems a tad big for you - the sleeves fall rather long, which makes it look slightly overwhelming... maybe that's where you get the "dumpy" vibe? i would try rolling up and scrunching the sleeves up to your elbows, which gives it a kind of cool, casual vibe.

- colors - the pale green and light tan of the jacket are really pretty, but worn together they wash you out a little. perhaps choose a brighter top, in a richer, more saturated color? a fuschia or a teal perhaps? i think those would really bring out your wonderful skin tone!

- accessories - a lightweight spring scarf (of the kind angie posted) and a couple of bangles may do the trick in bringing it up a notch and making you feel fab!

I really don't think you look dumpy, but I can see you're not happy. As Angie says, the devil's in the details. The color and fit of your top and jacket could be better. Do you have a cute springy top, and maybe a different jacket or cardigan to try?

There are lots of great suggestions on this site, and I can't wait to try them just as soon as I get all the pieces together. It can take awhile to find perfect fit, color (and price) but it is so worth it. Angie and this blog have saved me so much money by keeping me from buying the "almost works" clothes I used to buy.

You're very lucky- with your great body and face, you'll be able to look stylish and put together easily.

Hanna has given you lots of great advice. The thing I saw right away when I looked at the picture was the top. I think changing the t-shirt out will make a big difference. In addition to the fit and color, I would also look for a shirt with a slightly lower neckline, like a scoop neck vs. the crew neck.

I would also add that I don't think you look dumpy in the picture. But I do think there are things you can do that would make you feel more fabulous.

hannah has given you great advice! I don't think you look dumpy but I think the outfit is blah - I often feel that way too. Some colorful accessories would be the simplest solution - a scarf or maybe long chain or a colorful floral pin on the lapel of that jacket (like in Angie's post from yesterday).

I don't think you look dumpy, but unlike everyone else, the one thing that struck me was the jeans. They look too big. Maybe it's just me, but I think a more tailored jean and then adding a scarf per hanna's suggestion will fix you right up.

Thanks for the advice! You guys are probably right... overall, just about everything I'm wearing is too big. (Can't afford to get all my stuff tailored... and it's so hard to find things that fit my short legs and arms!) I like the structure of a jacket, but it's easier to find cardis that fit right, so I should probably wear them more.

The tee is actually a graphic tee, I was trying to take a cue from another of Angie's posts, but it's kind of hard to tell in the photo and the print isn't really obvious even in person.

Thanks again... I think I can use your advice and maybe switch this outfit up with some other items in my closet for a better look.

A dash of color would do wonders. And perhaps a V-neck tee or something more open at top. A bangle or a necklace would up the style quotient a little bit. Shoes can add a lot of style to any outfit. A pop of yellow, or a tasteful animal print can be great for a ballet flat. You are not at all dumpy. You just have perhaps not realized your full style potential with this particular outfit, but you are well on your way.

I don't think you look dumpy at all, its cute.

My question to you is this: when you wear an outfit you feel great in, *what* makes you feel great?

As a side note, and I apologize because you didn't ask about this, but the t-shirt seems too snug on the bust. I think I see horizontal pulling across the bust. I may be wrong, sometimes its hard to see in a picture.

Lets see another picture, this sounds like an on-going search . . .

Welcome to the forum bits! First of all you couldn’t look dumpy if you tried. You are utterly adorable and I LOVE your hair .

I have nothing further to add because the lasses have cleverly pinpointed out the details that prevent you from feeling fabulous in this particular outfit. I can’t wait to see more :0)
