Why did I buy any summer clothes?

Summer is going to be extra short here, since it hasn't really started and is forecast to be cold and rainy (!) again this weekend. And I run cold, so 70 degrees is not summer! My CPW for summer is going to be depressing. 2 sleeveless tops, 3 casual dresses, 1 pair of sandals all languishing in the closet.

I tried to rein in my spring shop and I'm glad I did. About the only way there's going to be a decent ROI on these clothes is if I convince DH we need to plan a tropical vacation next winter. Here's a couple sleeveless things I might get to wear if it warms up.

Any thoughts on styling these for 55 degrees and dreary? Or should I just go light a fire in the wood stove and pretend it's March?

We're having a long cool Spring (after a LONG cold Winter) too, but I'd rather be too cool than hot & sticky, so I won't complain! I like both your dresses a lot. The first could look great with a short leather or denim jacket, scarf, & booties. The second you might try over a long-sleeved tee, tights & flats, (LOVE the swingy shape of this one, so I hope you'll get to wear it one way or another.) And yes, give in and make that fire in the woodstove--it will cheer you up.

I'm asking the same question. Clothes I bought in March-April still unworn. I'm surprised it is still so chilly where you are. Strange weather everywhere.

No suggestions except to get out a nice pashmina. I had to get out my heavy sweater today, and Monday it was 97°.

Leggings and boots/booties with a cropped pullover sweater on top to turn them into skirts? It has very gradually been turning warmer for us, but long pants still are ok most of the day. I'm happy because I get so sick of my clam diggers and sleeveless breezy tops before the heat breaks.

Hello global warming. I think weather patterns are getting wonkier. We're having the opposite issue here. We apparently just set a new record for driest May ever (and shattered the old one), and I heard that our neighbours on Vancouver Island are already at level 3 drought conditions. Yikes. All the cool wet weather we normally get is ending up in the east.

As for your outfits, I'd just wait. I always feel weird in summer clothes if we don't have the weather for it. Cross your fingers.

Those are cute dresses. I would layer a 3/4-sleeved close-fitting tee under them, and leggings. Add a jean jacket if needed. Wear with cutout booties.
Sleeveless tops can be layered under sweaters or jackets in the 70s. And you might be able to wear the sandals if you are warm enough on top--i.e., with a scarf at the neck, a sweater, and jeans.
I was jumping the season with these kinds of outfits before our weather turned unseasonably warm. I can't believe it has been shorts and sandal weather already quite a lot here in Seattle. Some summers we get maybe a few days of that warmth!

I'm going to have a mental breakdown with the weather... I think the green dress would be easily warmed up worn as an apron smock over skinnies or veggies with boots and a long sleeved top underneath. I'd layer OVER the first dress.

that sounds like the summer we had last year….instead of counting the days over 90, we counted the days over 80…..so far this year we are having august 2-3 days a week (temps 85+) followed by april (temps in the 60s)….makes it hard to plan.
i like rachy idea for the green dress….for the black one, if your up for it, i'd wear it with black boots and a denim jacket--it would read fall but at least you'd get to wear it.

I often feel that way about our summers. By the time it really warms up in the NE, fall is lurking on the horizon. Still, fall can be warm during the day so all is not lost, fashion-wise

I would wear them with leggings and a cropped cardigan. We have had mixed and inconsistent weather here. Some days in the high 80's and some in the mid 50's. I found myself pulling out a wool sweater one day and the next wearing a sleeveless linen tunic.

At least I'm not alone! It's raining again this morning. Since drought is always lurking in the background, it would be immoral to complain about free water. So I won't. Lots of good ideas for extending the wear into fall, which is the dominant season here. But no more summer shopping that can't stretch into spring or fall for a while. Except maybe this paleo

Totally hear you - I am working with a capsule wardobe and have barely touched the tee and tank section, and the summer dresses not at all! I would add a jean jacket to these, and/or a cropped cardi ... scarves always add a little extra warmth too. And a nice cup of tea!!!

Firecracker - you Seattleites are having it very weird. My nephew plays youth baseball and my sister usually goes to the games in parkas, not shorts.

Tulle I like both suggestions, especially tights and tee with the green dress.

Lucy - this gives me the idea I should maybe hunt a pair of white skinnies to wear in the almost-summer.

Second thought - add a jean jacket (or a linen/cotton woven casual jacket that suits your style) and add some closed toe booties like my Find here (I can't take these off since they arrived a day ago!)

First thought was, take a 10-day trip to a warm climate like Kauai, and - girl math - CPW problem solved!

It's unbearably hot here in India....we're basically roasting away. It's 110 and I'm wishing I had those dresses!!

Sorry for the rant. You can totally wear the black dress with a denim jacket. It would look nice and casual, especially with ankle boots. Not summery, but definitely smart. I'd layer a 3/4th sleeve top under the green dress. And add calf length boots (you can also add tights if you want) with a moto over (if needed).

Annabelle, I'm angling for Vieques or Little Cayman. Winter this year was tediously long. Those booties are adorable.

I should finish knitting the tomato red sweater I'm working on, then it will either get hot or I can wear it over the black dress with my tomato red booties. Either way it's a win.

(This is my response to your question as I am also wondering why the cute FP tops bought with hot weather in mind and the slub tank to go with a shirt...are languishing in my closet waiting for me to decide to wear them...)
